    Bigshot sizzix cutting wood.

I wondered had anyone done this?

i know it can cut Balsa wood, but just wondered if that was all, have seen some fantastic wooden shapes cut to paint in a big store, and wanted to make my own.

i just wondered if it would cut really thin MDF.

I would be very worried that anything 'stronger' than veneer or very thin balsa wood would damage the die irreparably. Even the thick dies don't have that much depth of blade.

I would imagine it might cut some thin woods, but the problem would be getting the cut wood out intact - it would most likely get wedged inside the steel rule, so you'd possibly have to gouge it out somehow.

You would break your machine & damage the dies. The cost of the shapes is not much & not worth the cost of a new machine.

I wouldn't risk it, even if it did cut you would find it difficult to remove the shape from the die. I also have the large Ellison (like the Accucut) (is it called the Prestige) and I have cut thin wood with that (like the backing panel on photo frames/hardboard). It cut it alright but got stuck in most of those shapes too, so that I damaged the shapes edges trying to prise it out.

Now I stick to mount board, you can usually get offcuts free from most picture framers or I am more than happy to send you some for the cost of postage - but remember that they weigh heavy.

Thanks for the advice, I will try the balsa as it says it will cut that.

I did think if i glue two together I would get a thicker shape.

Thanks for the offer of the mount board, I do have some and we have a scrapstore near us too. So think I may visit.

I wanted wood as i was going to paint and hang outside.

if you want to hang outside why not try cutting coke or beer cans - i have a tutorial here and you could layer up and also colour with waterproof inks
