Hilary, end of year target sounds doable
Glad everyone is making some progress, slow and steady is good. Cris you’re excused as you’ve been away

I’m getting back into my family history again, DS bought me a dna test and now I’m hooked on Ancestry ! Yes please share your process, if you have one. I made a start doing a double page for one person, only ever got about 3 underway, another project to add to the list

My DNA has changed(yet again!) recently. You will find that every quarter or so you get a review sent through where they claim to have done a deeper, more accurate, analysis. I have slowly become more Scottish, less English and more European. The first bit I can understand, the second and third seems much less likely. I have Dupuytrens so probably have Viking blood somewhere down the line, but out of over 4,000 people on my tree I haven't found a single person not born in UK.
However my Great Uncle and Uncle both did a lot of manual research and my Great Uncle was adamant he had traced us to Atilla the Hun. Sadly his daughter who has all his research isn't interested in genealogy and won't either copy his enormous tree or agree to lend me it so I can go through it.

If you want any help just shout, after 12 years on Ancestry I am not bad at it!

I've always liked the thought of doing some digging into my family history, but my Mum's maiden name was Jones - almost as bad as Smith! (hope I haven't offended anyone). My Dads family come from Ireland originally, so I don't really know where to start with it. I'd also like to do something with Paul's, I think the name would be easy to find as it's unusual even in Italy.

You’ll be surprised what you can find out Sheila, if you know some details and work backwards you should make some progress.
Hubby’s great grandma was a Smith, and she didn’t marry so I’m finding her hard to trace back, can’t find her birth to confirm who her parents are.

Hilary, I apparently have 19% Swedish/Danish on one of my parents side, we’ll see how that works out !

All this talk of family trees makes me want to get back into mine.
Hilary, 4000 people is seriously impressive! How frustrating though about not having access to your Uncle's / Great Uncle's research.
Sheila, I feel your pain about common names. On my Mum's side, Smiths married Reids in an area where everyone was called either Smith or Reid. They used a very small pool of first names too, which doesn't help. Do you have any idea how long Paul's family have been in the UK?
Alison, oooh, Scandinavian heritage - that's cool. Did you have any idea?

Margo no, I don't know much about his side of the family at all. I'll have a chat with Yvonne, she might know something.

I've done some Family tree work too. I've got back to mid 1800s I think in some areas. I've been doing my tree and DH's. I think all our surnames are common and like Alison said lots have the same first names too - lots of Williams and Georges. I've come to a dead end on some lines for the same reason as you too - can't find the birth. My Nana wrote a life history type book and gave it to my Mum and it has lots of family info in but the names she called people are not actually their birth names. It was quite funny when I was discussing with my Mum
I haven't really scrapbooked any of it though and my Mum has got quite a lot of photos. I'd be interested to know what sort of things you are putting on your pages Hilary

It’s wonderful when you start out ,you put in a few dates and it unzips all kinds of stuff! I have found a couple of murderers, one killed by a bear(in Yorkshire!) , a n arsonist, and one who got deported to Oz but made good and had a river named after him!

An interesting family you have there !!
Best I’ve found is a connection with Henry Ford and the motor company, a family member moved over to Canada then to Detroit Michigan and the son became a US senator
