Well I've got my book - I'd already stuck some pages together, don't know what with, they buckled up as soon as I showed them daylight!!

Not altering the outside of the book. I quite like the thought of it looking like a really boring book that's not worth looking at, then opening it and getting - WHAM!!! not what was expected!!

Colours are kind of being led by the colours in the book at the moment.

Ok I have one ot two question?.... I'm not sure when to gesso???

I have done the intro page straight onto the watercolour paper but do I gesso the back of the page?? also How do the distress inks react with the gesso? I was thinking of pressing the pads onto my tile and spritzing with water... then running my page through (love doing this for vintage style tags)....

    Another question

I have created my first pafe. Do I use the back of the page for the next one or the new sheet? What do people do - I assume its personal preference?

Absolutely personal preference, I do mine all back to back - but I'm not too bothered about paint from page 2 maybe seeping around the edge onto a bit of page 1, in fact I rather like it when that happens.

I never bother with gesso on watercolour paper, personally - the paper doesn't need to be fortified and the gesso kills its absorbency. But of course if you specifically want a less porous surface then it will help.

Distress inks pool a little on a gesso'd surface, which is a cool effect in some circumstances but probably not what you want in others.

Your art journal is a great place to experiment. Why not gesso half the page but not the other, and try all your favourite inks and paints on both sides, to see what look you like best?

all mine have plain covers too - I always kid myself I'll go back at the end and decorate the cover but I never have yet

But they end up looking anything but ordinary as they won't come close to closing by the end, and you can see a riot of colour poking out

For example, here's a pic of my last one when it was only about a third full:

Whoa - you all roled off - thought it was quiet!!!

Lovely pages everyone, I'm inspired by how different and personal they can be!

    Chrissie, you can start anytime

Wendy, your description sounded very much like me - used to having a framework to ork within, and very hard top break out of that logical process. But I promise you it's worth it - I feel so much more relaxed in all aspects of my crafting and creativity, because my Art Journalling lets me create for creating's sake, and explore my thoughts and feelings without anyone else being involved. But don't let that mean that it's still not a diary - it's just not necessarily a diary of your whole day - more one of how you felt right at that moment x
PS. you can work on the back or pick a new one each time, your call - I work on the back

Baa Me - looking forward to seeing DH's pages

Chell - It's totally your call, I'd say if you're working with watercolour it would seal the previous page so the moisture on side 2 doesn't affect side 1. As for the Distress Ink question, I think the only answer is to experiment - then share with us! And if you don't like it, you can always gesso over it!
I woulnd't geso the tile though, might end up on your elbows again...!

PS> Hands up who wasn't brave enough to do this straight intot eh journal so ended up doing it on a scrap of spare paper...?

Yup, just replace the rusty nail with a colour, and that's this week's prompt in the bag

I think the reason people struggle with defining what art journalling is "about", is that it can be about ANYTHING.

You can use it as a diary, as a scrapbook (in the old fashioned sense), as a sketchbook / place to experiment with your art supplies to see what works and what doesn't, as somewhere to explore and vent your deepest feelings - or all of the above.

Mine is definitely an "all of the above"

Prompts, either on here or on any of the many art journalling blogs and sites out there, are just a jumping off point. Where you end up is up to you, and to an extent, irrelevant - it's the playing that gets you there that's the fun bit
