I'm just getting into this and am already completely HOOKED (my first effort is on my blog here . My inspiration was Kate Crane from The Kathryn Wheel, but I'd love to be in touch with other people exploring this too - am thinking of booking on a workshop in October run by Artist Trading Post. I also understand there's a magazine - is it from Stampington - and would be keen to buy a couple of back issues, just to see if I like it.

Yay, well done on your first page Rosie! Orange is my favourite colour at the moment.

I agree Mollymoo. It was really quiet for months but seems to be getting buzzier since New Year, with lots of new projects etc.

I'm so pleased especially that this AJ forum is attracting lots of new people etc with the UKS Art Journey etc. I love chatting on here.

It is nice to see so many people chatting. Wonder if we will see many stray from the art journey chat thread into here.

    Loving your first page Rosie.

I am enjoying the rejuvenated threads, MA and her band of helpers have certainly worked hard to get so many new ideas on the forum.

It's really lovely Rosie love the colours you have used

My latest page is on my blog here and was my first time using watercolours and colouring with distress inks so I am amazed it didn't all turn to disaster lol

Biskit please make sure to keep us in the loop if you decide to get Golden Acrylics you have been so great to order from

Quick question that you lovely ladies may be able to answer... can anyone recommend a decent, thickish brand of gesso? I've been using some Bob Ross gesso that I bought ages ago at Hobbycraft and it's fine for coating pages etc but I've just tried to use it for one of the techniques we did with Kate Crane at AFTH in November - scraping gesso through a mask/stencil - and it's just far too runny and is leaking under the stencil so I'm not getting the nice, defined results I got with Kate. Not sure if the brand we used with Kate might have been Claudine Helmuth? What brand of gesso do you use/would yu recommend?

Most likely you used Claudine Hellmuths, or Liquitex. I use liquitex myself.

Golden gesso is pretty gloopy, I use that for texture-y work and Daler Rowney for just slopping a bit on a page

Haven't tried the Claudine Hellmuth one but have heard good things about it (and I do love her gel medium more than any other brand I've tried...not that that's entirely relevant )

sorry, wasn't clear. I mean if I want to use gesso that will retain a bit of texture, like if I want to scribble into it with the end of a paint brush before it dries, etc.

If I want even more height or firm texture then yes I'd use a heavier body gel medium or texture paste

(*edited to add - for example - the card here has a coat of Golden gesso, stamped into with the "joy" stamp before it dries. Then once dried, it was sprayed over with Ranger colourwash, and the colour kind of pools in the dips.... That wouldn't work so well with my Daler Rowney gesso because it is much runnier and would level back out before drying.... hope that helps)

I like Golden gesso too Alipeeps. It's very thick so you can just water it down as much as you want.

Ahem....I am pleased to announce that I got my paints out this morning and have finally managed to get my Art Journalling Mojo into action! I have completed a page from scratch and started a few more. Seems like I spent a lot of time and didn't finish much, but hey, I'm back in the game!
