Good tip, thanks for that. All plants were intact this morning so that's good news.

I've heard that a saucer of beer works well too for snails and slugs. Haven't tried it myself as I don't drink beer!!

Also this kills them (happy admittedly !! )and I not into killing anything if i can find another way.

Crushed egg shells around the plants is suppose to stop them (although my snails are like the Royal Marines when it comes to egg shells ) or you can buy, I think they are copper bands (?) that you wrap round the top of your pots from garden centres these too are suppose to work, never tried them yet as opting for the cheaper option of vaseline - NOT SO TUFF NOW MY LITTLE ROYAL MARINE SNAILS !!!!

Oh well. Maybe we have stronger beer in Australia!!

Yeah, I know it kills them, Harrys_Gal. I actually haven't tried it myself because they don't bother me that much. There isn't much in the garden that I value! If there was a worst garden award, I'd probably win it!!

I used to have Hostas, but now I have stumps. I think it's snails, but having cats don't use anything to kill 'em. My answer is simple, don't have Hostas

Apparently coffee grouts round the plants stops them too. Not tried it myself as I am quite happy killing them. It's them or my runner beans/courgettes and I'm afraid my veg win!

I did read an article about making a floating island in your pond for hostas using polystyrene. Have to try it one day cos I'm sure the little beggars can't swim
