I usually use inserts if I have something a little longer I want to say because then I can type it in a funky font. But if it's a notelet or (I'll be honest) if it's a bit last-minute then I just quickly hand-write it!
An insert is when you put paper folded in half and inserted into the card somthing like this thumbnail, also you can put a verse etc on it iukwim
I could do with help in finding verses for my inserts
I print mine through the computer printer and either make a poem up or use books free from craft magazines that occassionally have verses in. Over the years I have collected a few and re use favourites.

that is so beautiful Margaret. That makes sense to me now. Wow...so inserts is a very common thing for you Brits? whether store bought or hand made?
I love learning about how things are outside the US. Here, we have cards with inserts too, but its not the norm. It just really depends on the store bought card design that you purchase.
I don't use as many inserts as I used to. I always use them if the cardstock is dark or brightly coloured, or if I'm wanting to hide brads etc.
My really guilty admission is that I use inserts for cards for birthdays etc for DH, as he only gives them a cursory glance (much to the outrage of DD) and then I sometimes "recycle" them"! How tight is that?! It's really that I've usually made a lot of effort, which hasn't been appreciated, so this way someone else gets the chance!
