Thanks Shirley it's so sad how this part of the forum is hardly used anymore unless someone has a problrm
It's a shame how quiet this thread has become and I have just dragged out my very old Silhouette. You have always been there with lots of helpful advice and beautiful designs which have been shared so willingly. I will be trying to get back into using my Silhouette when I eventually get time to craft but I would just like to say "Thanks" for the help you've given when I've been stuck.
On the odd occasion I have got my machine out I've had to use it on the floor so one of the things I did when re-vamping my craft room was to make space for my Silhouette and have a desk handy to use it on so no bending down. So all good intentions there.
Is it quiet because less people are using these machines or becoming more proficient or have dies taken over in some part do you think? The trouble with cutting dies is you are often limited to the size of the die but with the Craft Robo/Silhouette etc... you can make your design bigger or smaller which you already know of course.
Anyway, just thought I'd pop on and say Hi when I saw your post.
I've only posted when I've had a problem, sorry.
Maybe we should all post what we're working on at the moment.
I'll go first.
I'm designing a card for my husbands great granddaughter, he's only 65 !!
Anyway I'm doing a card that records her name, date of birth, weight etc.
It's in the style of an intricate cutout, if that makes sense like the laser cut ones you can get made to order.
I've ordered a new mat and blade just for this job.
I visit virtually every day but to be honest I haven't used my machine for ages because I have a different machine now and as my Cameo is the original machine I don't know what the later versions are capable of although I still use the software to make SVG files
So it's Facebook that is pulling people away. I don't use it at all so I will still be popping on here to pick your brains from time to time.
One of my biggest problems with my Silhouette was the stickiness of the mat. It seemed to go from super sticky, can't get anything off or not sticky enough and the card slides about mid cut. Also, with the old (original) Silhouette I will need new blades. Mine are the 3 different colours, yellow, blue and pink, would they still be available or can one of the newer style of blades be used in my Silhouette would you know?
Those blades haven't been available for a long time the ones below were what I was using in my original Cameo. The blue one says it's a fabric blade to distinguish between the two if you cut card as well as material but they are the same so you can use either if you don't cut fabric. I don't know anything about the newer machines and blades or if they can be used in the original machine sorry.

As per Doreen’s photo you can use the ratchet blade with the original Silhouette but not the Auto or Auto detect blades -see here for info-
https://www.graphtecgb.shop/product/...ratchet-blade/. Re the cutting mat have you tried resticking by spraying lightly with repostionable glue or Zigs two way wide tip glue pen - then dab over the mat with a T-shirt or something to remove the initial stickiness (clean the mat first either by lightly washing or use baby wipes and put masking tape over the edges as you don’t want those to get sticky) It’s something I do and my mats last for ages even though I use my machine everyday.
Thanks as always for the replies ladies. I did buy new blades a while ago now so I'm not desperate but will definitely check out that link and order the new blade.
I have also bought a new mat which I have used and it was very sticky. I tried washing and resticking my old one but it felt uneven (my fault no doubt) so sticky in some places more than others. Recently I needed large numbers for kiddies birthday cards and my Silhouette came out and that was great but whenever I attempt to do a more intricate design I seem to have problems with the card lifting and tearing.
As I keep banging on about, we have tons going on here at present, re-vamping next door (long story) and future proofing our home for our approaching old age:lol: so crafting has almost disappeared from my life which is a shame as I have this beautiful new craft room at last. So for now, thanks for the hints and tips, I will check out the link get a new blade and at some point be back on here picking your brains because the software has changed so much now. Also, I used to have a pc and I've had a Mac for about 9 years now and I used to use Inkscape for welding words and things but don't have that on here, not even sure if it is compatible. I'll be needing to find a software to do some basic designs unless that is all in this new software from Silhouette, as you can tell I'm really out of touch but know you're here for advice is very reassuring.:)
Yes you defintely can design in Silhouette studio it has lots of features, welding being one. The features vary depending whether you are using the basic version or pay to upgrade to Designer or Business edition but you can do lots in the basic version. Personally I think it is much more user friendly than Inkscape.
I use Inscape as well as Studio. I have a PC but I'm pretty sure you need to add some other software to allow you to use Inkscape with a Mac....maybe a Google search will tell you
I just download the latest software for the basic version so when I do get back into it I'll try that first.
Yes you could just change the name, weight etc for each customer. This was meant for Shirley Anne.
The most recent thing I've made is place name cards for my step sons wedding, I wrote each persons name with the pen holder then cut them out with a cut out heart in the corner. Then I cut pieces of card in the wedding theme colour and pasted it behind to show up the heart in pink. Easy to do and quick to make. I did them in that nice shimmery card in white with a silver shimmer.
Actually the very latest thing I made was a photo of the happy couple in a box frame with a frame of pressed petals from a rose in her bouquet, with a strip of satin ribbon form her bouquet also and some of the crystals from the table loose in the bottom of the frame. I used my portrait to size and print the photograph and to write their names and cut the backing card which was the same as the card I made the place names with. I'd love to hear what everyone else has been making.
Bobble21, have you got any photo's to share, it all sounds lovely
That is a great idea. I will look for a thread that begins 'what I am working on now'
I can't post a picture I've given the items to the happy couple and didn't think to take a picture, sorry. Thanks for the lovely comments though.
Ask them to take a photo, I've done that in the past when I've forgotten to take one, if they can that is.
Petrina, I think you can just start a thread now, you don't have to look for one. I thank that is what MaryAnne or Karen were encouraging us to do. There may be one in General Scrapping and if not start it.:)
I have always taken photos of the cards I make since I started making cards. I can then look back on the cards I have made in the past. Making sure family and friends are not going to be sent the same card again.:D
Can we post photos directly on here or do they have to go into the gallery, or can we we post a link to a photo host site?
I have not be around much as with so many bank holidays following each other and we have been away for all this year so far.
You can post here if you don't want to put it in the gallery. We don't usually put our cards for the card challenges in the gallery nor the photo's for the snapchat thread, they just get posted in the thread.
Funnily enough, my niece and nephew often send me the same birthday card or cards for any event. They obviously see a card they like and it is usually the same card.
I try to take a photo for the same reason, so I don't send them the same card again.
I know this has been asked by me before, but one thing I am looking at is the image attachments. There are a lot of files in the templates section that are massive. One card is over 12mb (from 2006, a .GSD) and I just have no idea if those things are worth keeping around.
I want to clean things up and make the templates organized in the best way possible but have literally no idea how to do that!
Are there any file types that are no longer used? Are there any that are so infrequently used by regular visitors that we can axe them?
Is there a better way to organize the templates to make them more usable? Or is a better question do people still use the template files at all?!
I am open to any and all suggestions - maybe even just having people tell me HOW they use the templates section would give me some information to help me decide.
Thanks!
Thanks Doreen, I'd completely forgotten that Graphtec sponsor this section. Sorry for the duff info Neries.:)
Wow, 12mb is huge isn't it but I'll leave that to someone else to answer since my knowledge is extremely limited to Silhouette files which I believe can't be shared and SVG's.
That is certainly a very large file. I know the GSDs can be used with Studio software but I can't remember when I last downloaded one but maybe other people do. The trouble is not many frequent this part of UKS or perhaps I should say not many post so it's not easy to know if they use the files or not. Hopefully those that do post can help with ideas.
I would have thought that those who used the files would say a 'thank you', I know I always did and people used to but that was a while ago. At least it was an indication who was coming onto the thread. Have to check out what you've all been up to. I know when I last looked I didn't use them because they were so clever and intricate in the main and that is where I was falling down with the cutting. Anything too intricate and my Silhouette seemed to start tearing the card. Oh it all started off with great promise and then half way through I'd have this shredded mess. I know it is something I'm doing wrong and when I get back into it I'll pester you all until I get it right.
I have a silhouette portrait which only gets used once in a while. I use it mainly to cut the odd word, or a numbers for a birthday card just using the basic fonts available, don’t think I have the patience to do anything fancy, I admire those of you who can design and do fancy things !
I have used a couple of templates from this thread, but a long time ago, I think I said Thankyou at the time ( well I hope I did !)
I’ve started looking through again, think there may a couple more I’d like to use, for specific scrapping projects I have on the go, if I can remember how to use them !
I would be inclined to do away with gsd files on the basis that new users probably aren’t aware that they can be used in Silhouette Studio and users who have been members for a long time have had plenty of opportunity to download them by now. Perhaps it would be worthwhile starting a new thread simply called “How do you use the Templates Section” or “Should the Templates Section be closed” in the hope more people will read it and respond rather than not noticing it in this thread.
I've used the templates but I tend to save them if I want to use them again, having said that I rarely make the same thing twice.
I pop in from time to time to see what people are doing or problems they have, I have had help quite a few times when I ran into difficulties, so really appreciate that.
I too have used the template section, there are some great templates. I have used the GSD ones in my silhouette and they then save as studio files.
As for facebook, no thank you.
Funny really, having now retired and what with the past couple of years, I have more time on my hands and yet seem to be doing much less!
Now I'm making a card for my husbands grandson and his girlfriend that have just bought their first home together and they're only 20 years old, quite an achievement these days.
I'm probably going to use a box card file that I bought on the silhouette website. There's always a reason to get the machine out.
