OK - once I sort out the Challenge year posts and the sidebar menu both will go!
Perfect
I’ve only just seen this. I never use the library, and as the photography forum
was moved ,I can’t see a problem with deleting it.
We have just swapped one place for another!!!!! I thought it might cause problems at first,
But it hasn’t.
Ellie
Sidebar sorted, although the ' in Dolly's seemed to give me problems so I left it out :D
Library is gone, and the menu has been updated with some more recent challenges. Photography stuff for SNAP! from 2019 and 2020 moved to the SNAP! sub-forum. I am deleting year by year once I have captured the prompts and once I get all the monthly prompts compiled (and boy that is slow-going) I will move that list to SNAP and the whole forum will go.
I am hoping this will solve the disk space problem for the rest of the year, but don't know for sure till all the deletions are done.
Have deleted some 400 pages of threads now ... takes forever but getting there
Thank you MaryAnne and Karen for doing all this maintenance to keep the site functioning. It's very much appreciated.
The tedious thing is deleting pages of threads as you can only delete 6 pages at a time in a three step process and so clearing 600 pages of old community chat from 2008 onwards is taking me quite a while!
I think the gallery deletion could be even more stringent and delete gallery posts older than 2014 ... that leaves 6+ years of gallery still there and I think it would make a heck of a difference. Plus I am absolutely sure everyone has copies of their pages either in albums or on their computer. I am proud/ashamed ... not sure which ... that I have a digital image of every page I have ever made from 2002 onwards which was great because I three away a LOT of old IRL layouts but I still have the picture of how awful they were should I ever want to humiliate myself!
I agree lots more years could be deleted.
Yes as i said before, 5 years is surely enough for anyone. There is still a load of really old stuff around, not just galleries but loads of cybercrop and old slymi etc. Does anyone really still look at that old stuff? Isnt there just a general delete button for a forum? I mean what is the problem with a blanket deletion of anything before 5 years ago?
I am sorry it is so difficult and taking you so long, thank you for your efforts
No one is quite grasping the difficulty of Gallery deletions, I think.
There is NO WAY in Photopost to delete a Gallery. You can either:
1. Delete individual layouts one-by-one
2. Delete all layouts in a year
3. Delete a full gallery by deleting the member from the vBulletin side of things
Each has a knock on effect -
1. deleting individual layouts is tedious and time consuming
2. Deleting by year means things that are linked will get screwed up. The Cybercrops in particular will be an issue. There is simply no way to track down every linked item to correct that so the whole forum is going to be littered with dead links
3. Deleting a member who has posted a ton means each and every post for all the members deleted will get set to GUEST, again, totally screwing up the database.
Of all the options, removing 2009 layouts is the easiest. Then I think we can live with that for a bit and see what the knock-on effect is. If it is something we can live with then moving on year by year seems sensible. Because 2009 was more the hey day of UKS, with huge numbers of layouts getting posted over the year, simply getting rid of that year, in addition to the general tidy up of the forums, might really help. I am also looking at Craft Robo/Silhouette tempaltes, another huge amount of storage and in the FORUMS not the Gallery.
I am inching towards the 2009 deletion but I am really aiming for caution - I have never done this sort of massive one click purge before and am a little terrified :) I just want to project the impact before I pull the trigger!
I think only you can gauge the complications from what you are intending to do..all we can say is we support your decisions in whatever you do.
When Smax was doing the admin we had gallery purges every couple of years and everyone accepted it. We have had the luxury of no gallery cull since the 2009 uploads so really nobody has cause for complaint.
Remove 2009, see how much impact it has then take more if a "cushion" is needed.
We have had several days warning and nobody has voiced any major objections.
Go for it!
I do always think that in case of fire I always have UKS with my LOs on, perhaps I should photograph all my oldest LOs again, I may have pics on a disc somewhere but I should be more methodical about care taking.
Thanks for trying to deal with it all ladies, I don't envy you.
In looking at the attachments, I can see some people are adding images that are over 7mb in size. That is HUGE for the SNAP! challenge. They do not need to be that big and are seriously impacting the disk space. I would rather keep layouts, even old ones, before keeping monthly challenge items. I am looking at ways to enforce a limit on attachments to say 2-3mb but I would love it if those who are uploading will take the extra step and reduce the size of your images before you load them.
I am not sure of the impact of enforcing a smaller size - I worry it might then prevent the images from showing in the forums but they will still be there, getting backed up every day.
Oh sorry MaryAnne, I didn’t think of that, but I suppose that’s why we upload straight to the thread rather than into the gallery, we don’t have to resize !
I will ask people to try and reduce them, probably need to do it in the card threads too, not all those go in the gallery either
I’m happy with 2009 deletion, that’s a long time ago !
I have looked back through the snap threads for this year and a lot of the photos are HUGE and they really don't need to be.
When I upload directly from my phone it gives me the option of size and I select small.
If I upload from the computer I resize the same as I do for the gallery
You can always look back and see how big your photos are if you re unsure by looking at your post and selecting manage attachments and it will show your he size. They should really all be below 1mb. They don't need to be any larger than that and I know we can allr esize as we do for the gallery.
When your think that some people have maybe 30 - 50+ photos in a month chat on snap challenge and they are over 1mb each that is possibly more than 50mb of photos which is a heck of a lot of gallery space we could use.
I have looked back through the posts this year and lots of the photos are closer to 2mb or even higher.
Again I think the focus has to be on space for the gallery as this is first and foremost a scrapping forum so resizing the photos in snap would make a huge huge difference to space.
I apologise MaryAnne, I have checked back and some of my photo's are 2MB whereas I always resize for the gallery to about 250 kbs. I've just posted one photo at 122kbs on the snap challenge and it is fine and perfectly good quality. Thanks for pointing this out.
Good point about the card threads too Alison.
Hi there again - just to put my twopenneth in - I am currently doing the Card Challenge No 2 each month and would be happy to add something like below when I post each months challenge :
A) Make sure that your pictures are a smaller size - (Tell me which size you would prefer)
B) Back up your contributions yourselves as these challenges will only be held on UKS for - - - - (say 6 months or something?????)
If folk really want to save a particular picture then they should perhaps do so on their own equipment? I have a specific folder called Card Ideas and I store those things in there IYKWIM.
yiayia that sounds perfect ...
I think don't specify a size just say a smaller size like for the normal gallery and maybe say they wont be held on UKS indefinitely rather than specify a time -
thank you so much x
OKEY DOKEY - Noted.
Yes, that would be very helpful - really we have cleared out a fraction of what we need to. The Layout gallery is the thing I am most hesitant to delete, and the Cyber Crops, as those have historic value. I did delete pretty much any of the Junior Scrappers stuff that I could find and some of the pre-crop challenge stuff and swaps from the CyberCrops but moving forward the single biggest impact is the attachments.
I have identified the largest photography attachement and it is 7.2 mb uploaded in February - that is MASSIVE. I am going to reset the file size to 7mb and see what that does to this particular file. It may block it from view. if it does, then I will know the impact of changing the upload size. And I will have to think about how best to move forward.
OK - I guess it is good - changing the upload size to 7mb did NOT remove the image that was 7.22mb. SO I am setting the upload to 2mb moving forward. If you are someone who's images are consistently huge, I'll PM you to ask you to look at them and reduce the size. That should help a lot.
The ladies in the snap chat thread are all taking it on board and the uploads should be around 250kb maximum. Will help enormously.
Unfortunately I can't place a limit in one place only - not sure about 250kb for Gallery images, for example. I did pop in to say a bit thanks to Elaine, who really went to town on her photos! The 5 top Attachment posters are 5 people who all post a LOT in Photography, so if they are all taking it on board then we should be good with little else done .. so far as ATTACHMENTS go. The Gallery is still an issue and I am steeling myself for that once I check the back size on Monday to gauge the effect we have made so far.
I was so pleased Elaine addressed it as hers were huge. She has altered them all - an amazing job.
I took the easy option and deleted mine as I couldn't face replacing them
some of the ladies are worried about replacing them and I don't think they need to worry ... just upload smaller in the future
Presumably when the old snap chat threads are deleted from 2020 backwards it will make a huge huge difference as those are all huge photos
Everything that is going for SNAP is gone - unless it is OK for me to delete 2019 as well :) I did all but 2019-2021. Happy to collect the monthly prompts and delete 2019...
I think they could go to personally
I’m happy with that too.
Ellie
I’m happy for 2019 to go too. Glad we have got to the bottom of the problem.
Hi
Has the genealogy thread/forum been removed in the cull?
I know I posted in it recently and now I can't find it. It could just be me but I thought I'd ask :)
Thanks
Hi MaryAnne
Thanks for replying
I did see the banner but obviously missed that Genealogy was going. It's not a problem just that I couldn't find it when I looked :). If I do need to post again, I will put it in General Scrapping
Thank you
To be honest I have stopped posting anything in my gallery because hardly anybody ever seems to look at them and even fewer comment. I think the only ones that get much traction are the people in teams or doing challenges. So feel free to delete all mine if t helps
I try and comment on every page that goes up ... doNot always manage it but I try ... And I know a lot of others do too. I think it’s true you do get to know people though if you are active on the boards and then when you know people and they know you you comment more. So many e that’s why it seems like it’s the same people.
I’d love you to try posting again. It’s a smaller group now but we try to give lots of feedback and nice comments.
I agree completely with what Scrapdolly said there. I too stopped uploading at one point because noone seemed to ever comment and it was such a bind resizing it all etc and with the three a day rule you couldnt even do it in batches.
HOWEVER - since November or whenever it was that we had the big discussion, someone told me about 'forum spy' and i used that to see new posts since my last visit (its a blunt tool but you soon learn which forums and chats interest you) and I started joining in more on several threads and I have made some lovely new friends and generally got to know people (rather than just posting layouts) and of course that has two effects:
1. you become friendly with these people so want to be supportive and see what they have done and therefore comment
2. their layouts and pictures are much more interesting to you, since its people/animals/places and things that theyve done and have talked about, so its not just a page of a cat or whatever, it is their cat, that you have been hearing about its antics etc.
Anyway, I find joining in more has been the answer and yes I too try to comment on all the pages if i can, but I tend to get behind and do it in batches - its a pleasant way to spend an hour, looking at and being inspired by these lovely pages and yes, leaving them some comments.
I confess I comment on loads and loads of layouts but if the people don’t bother to respond to mine, I gloss over them in the future. To spend considerable time saying nice things to other people and them ignoring everyone else is tiresome so I don’t do it.
I completely agree that the more active you are the more you get to know others and the more comments you tend to get. It is lovely when people do take the time.
I love your style Julia so do take the time to post again. X
This as not happened yet :)
Sorry, but we have been OK in terms of storage (so long as my tech guy/husband does some routine maintenance) so I have been putting it off. I will look at this again before the start of 2022 (assuming UKS will still be active in 2022) and finally just do it in December.
I've just spotted this post from you, MaryAnne.
I checked the size of the LOs I've uploaded, and they are generally comfortably under 100Kb, even double page LOs. Occasionally someone will comment and say they can't read the journalling, but apart from that I believe my LOs have a good enough resolution for most purposes.
I post in the Snap thread too, and use much the same size there. Again I believe they are still at a good enough resolution for people to see the detail.
I'm mentioning this only to highlight that maybe we can get away with uploading smaller files than we initially thought without losing detail, which would (hopefully) allow the space available to accommodate more files.
