I'm actually ashamed because by rights I ought to be able to speak fairly fluent German. My father was in the army and was stationed in Germany for many years, and was very proud of the fact that he'd been told that he spoke the language like a native. I spent around 5-6 years in total over there as a child, and did pick up some, but at army schools there i was expected to learn French and Latin!! - but not the language of the country we lived in. However I can use the excuse that I had to dig back for memories over 50 years old... though I did have Babel Fish to really help me out!!

Sorry to hijack this thread.
My Dad was in the Army too and I was born in an Army hospital in Dusseldorf in 1958! I left when I was one and have never been back.
I have a mental block where languages are concerned and speak very little of any other language. Just not in my skills set
My youngest sister was born in an army hospital too in the May of coronation year - I think it was in Hanover. I remember my mum telling us that while she was in there she loved listening to the nightingales singing every evening in the hospital grounds.
I was born in Dusseldorf in 1957!! My dad was also in the army. What a coincidence.

Words fail me Erika How very very strange, in the nicest sense of the word, is that. Birthdate is 30th May . . . any more coincidences ?
I have some baby photos of me out and about in D park feeding birds etc and there's def one of me sitting on a fountain to stop the water coming out. Must see if I can locate them.
