I recently got a HP PSC 1610 All in One printer scanner, it's only A4 but I manage to scan two halfs and stitch them together using the HP software that came with the scanner. I sometimes loose a bit at one edge but the results and better than my photo uploads. The stitching software automatically matches and crops the scans.

The free software Arcsoft in the library really is the best for stitching - I never got it right with photoshop. MA has put a tutorial on stitching in the library too.

I use Adobe Photoshop 7. While the scan is still in two layers try erasing the overlapping edge of the top layer to disguise the dark line. It usually makes it better.
