    clipboards

I'm attempting to make a clipboard for my mum but the paint that I've used on the metal comes off every time you accidentally scratch it (it's Anita's acrylic paint). Is there anything that I can use to seal the paint and perhaps give it a glossy finish as at the moment it looks a bit naff! I've added some PVA glue to the paint and it does not seem to make much of a difference. Thanks!

I was trained one time by one of the big paint companies (I used to demonstrate decorative paint effects long ago) so to be honest knowing what I do, you'll not get a water/acrylic paint to stick to metal.

You really should sand it a bit first to provide a key for the paint to stick, or you could try one of those wipe on primer products. Then either use a base coat suitable for metals, or perhaps one of those cans of enamel paints (like they use for metal models) or the spray sort from the big DIY stores.

Varnish might help but to be honest the problem is likely to persist.

Thanks Mandy. I've actually already painted them but next time round I will remember to sand and try something other than acrylic paint. I've not seen wipe on primer products before. Are they the sort of thing that DIY stores sell?

I had the same problem with my lunchtin until I coated it with Glossy Accents (v sim to Diamond Glaze). Its still not 100% protected but it is much better

From watching QVC the other day tim holtz was on about achieving a tarnished effect on silver coloured metal clips and suggested heating them with a lighter. It gave a nice effect.....just take care not to set fire to your clipboard though!!

I've left all the ones I've done silver as they came. Doesn't seem to be a problem, they keep walking out of the house. Usually tucked under someones arm!
