    April's Project, Step by Step

    1. Take your A4 or other large size photo and mat it on black cardstock leaving a frame around the edge. If you're using a smaller print, you may want to leave the mat the full page width on the long size of the picture so it will cross the full page (that would be the width on a landscape image, height on a portrait).

    2. Choose the border elements you would like to use and cut them from the sheet. Look for two that can be full borders and one you might want to cut into pieces.

3.Attach one of the borders at the bottom of the page, a little more than an inch from the bottom. (If you're using a portrait image, you'll swap all this to the right/left instead of top/bottom, of course.) We're using one of the patterned paper sheets as the 12x12 background.

    4. Attach the photo above that border strip.

    5. Try handcutting a decorative edge from your second patterned paper. It can be wavy, scalloped -whatever comes to mind. If you really don't fancy giving the handcut look a try, then you could trace a shape, die-cut it or use a border punch.

    6. When you get an edge you like, cut it away from the rest of the patterned paper so you have a border strip.

    7. Try inking the edge to help this patterned paper mix with the rest of your choices. Choose a colour of ink that coordinates with your page - I almost always use either black or brown.

    8. Attach the handcut border above the photo.

    9. Cut separate elements from one border strip. These can be words, shapes or motifs - or even just the border cut into small boxes. Add ink if you like.

    10. Attach these with pop dots on the photo itself - in an empty space where you're not covering something important. That was the top left on my image but it might be somewhere else for your picture.

    11. Attach the remaining border strip above the photo, over your handcut edge. You may need to cut the border strip down a bit if there's not enough room. I cut mine in half and I preferred the design of the border that way, so that was useful!

    12. Add the date with small letter stickers, at the top edge of the photo. (Mine is at the right - readjust if your step 10 was elsewhere!)

    13. Write part of the title with large letters, either on top of the photo or on top of the border strip, depending on how the image looks best.

    14. Add another word to the title with the smaller letter stickers. See if you can find a natural gap in the large letters for the smaller word to fit.

    15. Use two scraps cut into small boxes to create a layered effect at the top right corner. (I used the branding strip from one of the patterned papers plus a bit of the extra black cardstock.)

    16. Finish this little grouping with other extras you still have out - a monogram using a single letter sticker, another piece cut from the border sheet placed on a pop dot. It's all about creating embellishment without needing something premade (or expensive).

    17. Pierce five holes, roughly evenly spaced, from the left to the right of the grouping. Add five brads here. (The evenly spaced may be a misnomer as obviously there is a gap where there 'would be' a brad under the pop-dotted paper.)

    18. Repeat this same grouping of scraps + brads at the bottom of the page, below the title. This grouping is smaller and I just used three brads.

    19. Add writing in all the space left at the bottom of the page.

    20. All finished!

Almost done with mine! LOVE this layout! Wish I had an A4 photo. Mine is 8X10, leaving a 1 inch boarder on the left and right side of photo. Photo is horizontal. Having trouble deciding whether to center photo on mat or move to one side and embellish the other. Any suggestions?
Also, picture is of my youngest at 1 month of age sleeping like an angle in a wicker basket...makes me think of Moses being pushed down the Nile. Trying to come up with a title more creative than Ethan ....1 month. Any ideas/suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Sharon

    Finished mine, too!

I really loved this challenge, and I'm planning on playing with it a lot more with other photos.
My head was spinning in bed last night, thinking how it would be great for group shots and pointing out who's who, too.

AND YES, I even tried winging that freehanded border - turned out to be simple - thanks Shimelle!

I loved this challenge - thank you. It was the first time that I've ever used a photo that large and it won't be the last!
