I'd love a kiln and want to have a go at enamalling and pmc! I have resin stuff but struggle with a suitable space for making and curing due to fumes.

My "studio" is part of our dining room - we compromised on space for a table etc to squeeze in storage and a desk - I am a "homebod" and need space for me and my hobbies (I also have sewing stuff in a cupboard on the landing and a set of storage drawers in the bedroom....). As much as I don't want my children to grow up quickly, I am looking forward to the changes that will come as they grow up - I just want them small and to have a room to myself now though

Hello folks. I am feeling very down today (health problems for both me and my dad) but it's really cheered me up to log on here and catch up with you lovely people!

Have been looking at everybody's blogs in an unhurried way and really enjoyed that.

And all this talk of what 'studio' space/equipment we all have/covet is interesting. I used to feel lucky to have my little area all to myself when I was just working small, but now that I am making large (A3/A2) paintings and collages, it's uncomfortably tight (like a lot of my trousers these days! )

haven't been on here for a few days, gosh what a lot of chat!

Miss L - I hope you feel better soon

Phoenix Rising - sorry to hear about your fire, must have been awful I take it it inspired your user name??

as for our work areas, must admit I am perfectly happy with mine. We have a big kitchen/diner and I have effectively taken over the dining room half.

My dining table now looks like the first attached picture, and I can't remember the last time we ate at it (Christmas Day I think!) - but the family don't seem to mind

Second attached picture is my "den o' craftiness" on a remarkably clean and tidy day (it doesn't look like that often lol)

As our entire downstairs (well, except the loo ) is open plan, this means I can sit and make stuff while still feeling part of the family, as I am near enough in the same room as anyone who is watching TV / playing computer games / getting themselves a snack or a drink etc.

I wouldn't have it any other way, as I know I would feel kind of guilty taking myself away from the family to go and work in a separate room.

So much as it would be nice to have a dedicated huuuuuge "studio", I know I'd always find myself sneaking back to the dining table

Wow, what an organised space! I have a desk with stuff piled up on it. I must clear it off. I'm in a corner of our spare room, the spare bed being my "alternative" storage space. Yep - it's a double as well. Really need to tidy that up as well in case one of us gets a cold (we both snore when we have colds )

I'm also going to want to do some - dare I say it here...scrapping when we get back from holiday. Three weeks and counting! Need to knock up a few more backgrounds in my journal before we go.

Claudia - hope you feel better soon.

If I knew how to I'd put a pic in this post of my craft area after the fire---actually it'd probably give you all nightmares!

And yes my user name is a reference to the fire!!

well I've done another couple of pages but I am not happy with them - feeling pretty down about my AJ'ing really - did any of you feel that it just wasn't working for you - I did feel at the beginning of the week that it was all coming together but these last couple of pages I've really struggled with to get away completely from Scrapbooking - and, as I said, it's just not working.

I won;'t give up though - see how I go.

Can'tstopstamping - the pages you don't actually like much are part of the journey, so don't beat yourself up over them! You learn as much from the ones you don't like, if not more, than the ones which (just occasionally) give you enormous pleasure. The ups and downs of life all have their place, and an art journal will inevitably reflect that truth. In my first journal there are loads of pages I'm not keen on, but I can see a development there nonetheless. On the other hand I'm on my third now, but I still make pages which aren't right. Be gentle on yourself and STOP BEING SUCH A PERFECTIONIST!! Our pages aren't meant to be perfect, they're meant to be TRUE, and to have meaning for us .... and they do.

Here here! Gilly, I completely agree with Rosie.

I love art journalling as I feel under less pressure to "get my pages right" as I do when scrapping. Just enjoy it and relax. Get the gesso out and start again if you want to.

Bernice the project looks really exciting I wish I was able to do it. I have made a note of the addy so I can look at it from time to time and I might even have a go on my own when I have more time. Mind you like you I cannot upload so I wouldn't be able to take part. I am hoping a friend will eventually sort me out with the uploading etc.

Evening all! I'm feeling much brighter today.

Flo - your crafty space looks *lovely*! Really organised, and I love the yellow!

Gilly - I feel like that very often, even though I've been at the AJ'ing lark for years! I also feel the same way regularly about my painting. But then at other times, when it does go well and I do like what I've done, I feel really buzzy and positive. I'm an up-and-down kind of person and it sounds like maybe you are too.

It helps me to think of AJ basically as a place to experiment - a testing area for techniques and ideas. It's not a showpiece. I do a lot of sketches/backgrounds/collage stuff/complete pages and I only finish or keep about 50% of it.

I always have dozens of pictures/pages on the go at once, so ditching the ones that aren't going well is just part of the process for me.

can I ask you what you use over pages to make them semi-opaque? OR semi transluescent?

like, if you paste on some magazine images and then you want to make it fade into the background but still see the image but very faded - IYKWIM - I have white gesso - I've been looking at matte medium - but I understand that dries clear - do you mix a bit of white gesso into the matte medium or are you using something entirely different.

    Hope I've expained this properly.

    Thanks in advance.

I use undiluted white gesso, either scraped on very thinly with a credit card or buffed on with a wrung out baby wipe

thank you - I've just been trying waterbased gloss varnish with a bit of colour (inktense blocks) and white gesso - and I think I have the desired effect.

but open to more suggestions please - thanks in advance.
