    ATC sets or editions

Hope it's alright to start a new thread. This isn't about the 'ATC Trail' and the sticky that says 'chat' hasn't had any messages since 2007, so.....

I just started a set of ATCs around the theme of Alice in Wonderland (on my blog), but can't find anywhere that tells if there is a specific number that should be in a set or 'edition'.

    Thanks.

I've no idea either I'm afraid.

However I WOULD be interested in a thread that we do a 'set' of say 3 or 6 or 9 swaps?

    Anyone else interested

(that's IF you'd host it, of course)

AFAIK there is no rule about quantities - I've never come across one! They just need to be numbered as n1,n2,... of x many. The only "rule" is that Editions should be identical designs and Series themed ones.

Ooh, but I'm not sure I can give up my Alices.... I finished two more yesterday and I'm stopping at six in the set for now. I may however (ahem) come up with a new theme and I could try to pry them from my clutches once they're done. I like the idea of fewer (i.e. 3 or 4) in a set. I think I've developed a new addiction!

I did number mine (1/6, 2/6, etc.) and gave them all the same title ('Alice in Wonderland' as that's the theme), so I guess that's a 'Series' then. But for an 'edition' (identical designs) would you only trade one at a time? It wouldn't make much sense to me to swap for more than one if they're identical, or am I missing something?

Hmmmmmm Interesting discussion. I have no idea either really, but, for what it's worth, If I make identical ones, I number them 1 of 3, 2 of 3, etc. Whenever I make similar ones but that are substantially different, I number them 1 of 1 because they are all different and therefore original. But, then, they may form part of a series, which I hadn't even thought of before!

GAAH - anyone else have anyone ideas?

But, continuing fron Jane's other comments, sometimes I am so surprised at how some ATCs have turned out that the collector in me has trouble parting with them too . So, if it was for a swap, I send the original as 1 of 1 then make another for me that is similar but has something different (so that it is another "original" iyswim) and mark that 1 of 1, because it is. BUT, being as I have been on a roll lately, I make, say 3 the same, marked 1 of 3, etc, 2 to swap and one for me!

Must say though, if ATCs are miniature pieces of original art, same or a set, I firmly believe they should be marked accordingly (if we can agree how!!! )

Still curious, though.... say if you have a set of four identical ATCs, do you trade all four at the same time to the same person or just do it one at a time to different people? Sorry if I'm thick -- it's a trait I was born with!

If I had a set of four identical ATCs I would trade/swap them with four different people

In answer to Gilly's plea - watch the swap forum very closely I have put in a new ATC swap request to Tree involving Jane's theme

I afree with Netty - different people.

Why don't you join in the ATC trail, Jane? You only jump in on the one thread when you want and it is only 1 or 2 swaps with the person above and person below as and when, no pressure.

I've been looking at it, but can't quite get in my head how it works. Maybe I will join once I figure it out. I'm going to make more ATCs as just today got a new book, 'Art Journal Workshop' by Bernie Berlin. Looks very, very good!

LOL - I know what you mean! Let me explain - there are 2 threads - the one here is for chatting and thanking people, confirming when you have received your ATC. The second thread here is the one that you "jump in" when you are ready to swap - no chatting.

Once you have jumped in, you swap with the person above you and the person below you and PM each other to exchange your details for posting. It is usually 1 ATC to each person, but you can agree to swap more, if your fellow swapper agrees.

The beauty of the trail is that you only jump in when you want,so no pressure, and it doesn't count as a formal swap, so you can do this as well as your other (regulated number) swaps.

Hope this helps and hope you join!

I always try to remember to scan or take a photo of any ATCs (and cards, etc) that I make, so that I can keep a record. Some of them are unique and I couldn't repeat them if even I wanted to, so for me this is the next best thing. But a large proprtion of the ATCs I make are for organised swaps anyway so I have to part with them.

Jane: Both editions and series are used in organised themed swaps: sometimes you have the freedom to choose whether you make them all the same or all different, sometimes you might be required to make them all the same, e.g. if you had 12 people doing a zodiac swap then each person could be required to make 12 (identical) ATCs for one particular zodiac sign.

Honeypip: By my logic an edition can be any number from one upwards, so if they are unique they are a 1 of 1 edition, otherwise they're 1/x, 2/x, ... x/x edition. A series has to be more than one in a theme, otherwise it can't be a series - by definition!

But afaik this is all convention rather than fixed rules.

    Rosemary

PS If I was doing a themed series, I'd probably label them something like:
    Alice in Wonderland: Alice
    Alice in Wonderland: Mad Hatter
    Alice in Wonderland: Dormouse
    ...etc

Jane - it'd be lovely to have you on the trail with us - we';ve become quite a little family now - it's nice to have new people swapping too. Very simple. Just join the trail - swap an atc with the person before you and the person after you they do likewise so it keeps the trail - trailing.

I've been rather busy - but as a host there really isn't much to do on the trail - thankfully - and the lovely peeps who trail keep it going - and I thank them very very much.

Going for a nosey netty incase your new themed atc swap is happening.
