    More advice needed please

Well, I went ahead and bought a set of 36 watercolours and they are great but.... If I want a really bright colours like red, how do I achieve this? Also, a bit of a daft question but does anyone know what colour by Derwent is a true red cos I've got light red which is too pinky and red which is too orangy and no REAL red like blood or poppies!!!

    Evening Penny

You can get a bolder colour in 2 ways, either put the wet brush directly to the tip of the crayon or build the colour up by adding layers of colour (allowing each layer to dry)

I tend to normally put brush to crayon anyway, but if I want a softer look then I colour the image first and then blend with a wet brush

    Hope this helps

I'm not sure which would actually be the truer red sorry

Scarlet Lake, Deep Vermillion and Magenta are the reds I have in my Derwent 36 box Penny. One of them was used to colour this stamp (can't remember which though!!) here - it could be made deeper than this even.

Penny - you should be able to build the colour up with what you have like Jane says - you would just need to let the layer dry and not use too much water....

Thanks. I will do that but I still need to buy the correct reds. I always find red a problem cos I want specific types.

you can buy individual pencils from most art shops, no need to buy a whole other set [unless you want to of course!]

I got mine from Hobbycraft, they were marked up wrong and instead of £44 I got them for £20!! I bought some individual ones too so perhaps you could just get the red you want? Mine are in a mainly blue tin - 36 Derwent Watercolour Pencils. HTH.

I guess I can post this about Hobbycraft. They are currently doing a promotion on a fancy wooden box of 72 Derwent Water Colour pencils that would be £99.99 and they are down to £39.99. I work for their sister company and so get a further 25% off as staff discount. Fabby £100 of pencils for £30!!!!!

Having said that, the reds don't look very red!!!! Haven't used them yet as I am planning on playing with the new Craft Robo software

I managed to get a better red today. The confusing thing is that my tin of pencils is made by Derwent but is called Start. They turn out to be the same colours as in the Derwent tin but called different names and were much cheaper!! I just tried out a few in the shop and bought some but ended up with 2 duplicates!
