I have done it with die cut shapes as you do need the correct number of slots to wind the thread into.
I have also see that a company has come out with a punch that punches out spirelli shapes with the correct slots...
It is fun, and you can get quite interesting effects.. kinda like those thread and pin pictures I did when I was a kid.

I have also done it with scalloped paper edger scissors, you can get big scallops or smaller ones and if you are careful and cut a square matching up the corners you can get some quite interesting designs.

I have used the punch, but found it only worked through paper,You just have to be carefull not to pull to tight. I know they did stop making them, but think they have re-released them now. I have also used the scallop edged normal punches.

We sell so many of the scalloped edge shaped punches for spirelli, that we have re-named them on the site so people can find them more easily! Teh super Duper are best if you are just starting as the notches are bigger and it's easier to'catch' the thread in them. Once you have had a little go, you can try the Super size and layer your creations on top of each other.

With regards to patterns - just wind it round til your happy with it! Much less fidly than writing the numbers on the back and trying to work out the patterns. General rule of thumb for us is that you need an odd number, so stick your thread to the back of the shape and wind it over one notch, then count 7 (or 9 or 11 etc) notches along and wind it to the back, then just move one notch along each time until you are back to the beginning. (Did that make sense to anyone other than me?)
