Evening all

Wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction for some information Im after?

Have just received the death certificate for my dad's eldest brother - he didnt really know him as he went to live with their paternal grandparents (for some reason) before my dad was born.

When I started to trace the family tree, I came across his death record, was saddened obviously, as I had hoped to find him and begin contact.

Anyway, the date of death is 26th February 1999, cause of death is multiple injuries, and verdict - accidental death. There is no name of informant, it just says certificate was received rom N L Rheinberg, Coroner for County of Cheshire - Inquest held. The date of registration of death is 8th September 1999, so there is 7 months in between the death and the registration.

Does anyone know where, or how I would go about finding out about the inquest, or in fact, if I can? I cant tell from the certificate if he was ever married either, so Im hoping that any further information I can get from this, will give us a clue as to whether we have more family somewhere?

Sorry I'm not a genealogy buff, would there be a local paper that might provide some insight if there was an accident?

I'm very sorry to hear your sad news.
I don't know if this is of any help, but as you're a relative I'm sure it's possible for you to contact the Coroners office concerned and ask them.
The reason for the gap is because of the inquest itself. My partner had to wait a fair while between the date of his late wife's death and inquest, and then for the certificates to be released. He didn't go to the inquest (as it was too painful) but he did contact the Coroners office and the information was then passed over to him. Even though they were married at the time of her death he wasn't on the death certificate as the informant because of the need for the inquest(as with almost all cases where the death wasn't of natural causes)
I'm sorry if I've not been of any help.

Hi :)

I don't know whether this will be helpful at all, but as a Registrar of births and deaths I can tell you that whenever an inquest is held, the Registrar registers the death without an informant, and takes all of the information from the certificate after inquest, received from the Coroner's office. I don't know how far back the Coroner's information goes, i.e. how long they are required to keep their records, and I don't know whether this information is likely to be available to you, but it's worth contacting the Coroner's office involved, just to see whether they can help. They would almost certainly have had details of your uncle's next of kin, and if he was married at the time of his death, that would be his wife, although I doubt that they would give you any information about her. I would advise you to put any request for information in writing in the first instance, explaining the family connection, and asking whether they can provide any information. I have registered many deaths after inquest, and a finding of multiple injuries suggests that it was possibly a road traffic/agricultural accident or something similar, although this is not necessarily the case, and I wouldn't want to speculate.

Good luck with your search :)

Thank you ladies, you've all been very helpful.

Ive actually been quite lucky, if lucky is the word with such a sad discovery, but I put the address on the death certificate into 192.com and it bought up a lady, still living at that address with the surname of my uncle.
I thought it was too big a coincidence, so took the chance and wrote her a letter. I received an email on Wednesday night from a friend of this lady - she explained she was my uncle's widow, is registered blind, as was my uncle and so this lady deals with her correspondence for her.

She was apparently delighted I had been in contact and is willing to help me in my research in any way she can :) They are going to meet next week when she will dictate to this lady all she can remember about him and the family. The lucky bit comes in that my uncles wife remarried in 2003 so doesnt actually have his name anymore - just lucky 192.com wasnt up to date otherwise I wouldnt have got any further in my search!

She also said that it was a tragic death, he was hit by a car crossing the road and died at the scene. She said he often wondered what had become of his brothers, Im just so sad Im 6 years too late to tell him :(

Suzy, I'm so sorry it was such a tragic death, but so pleased that his widow is going to be able to fill in lots of the gaps for you - that's great news :)

I am sorry to hear your sad news, but delighted that you have had an success already.

Inquest records are closed for 75 years and details only released, usually to the next of kin. The local newspaper is likely to have reported the accident itself and to mention the inquest, which could well have been some time later.
