I registered for genesreunited ages ago but I'm now loving it. i've been in contact with two distant relatives and have managed to get my relatively small family tree to grow to a massive one.
I had a person contact me today and they have 4090 people in their family tree. Ok a lot of them are only connected by marriage but it's a big find so I'm well chuffed. They even have a photo of my great grandmother with two of her sisters which they are going to forward to me.:D

Fantastic find Kat!! I had the same sort of thing when I found a tree on Ancestry which had loads of my ancestors in! I emailed the tree owner - a distant cousin who lives in Australia. We've been in touch loads of times now by email and she's lovely - sent me photographs of two portraits of my great-great-great grandparents!

congrats. I had a lucky find a bit like that but not so huge and now I have family back to 1730.
I googled someone with an unusual name and found there 6x great grandson's website.

Hi Kat,
I am a member of that website too...and have found loads of distant and not so distant relatives. I have found a half cousin of my grandmother who didnt even know she exsisted, and i found a more distant relative who had my great great great great grandfather family bible with lots of info it it - like the exact time of birth! There is no way i could have found this info without a website like it. And like you said....it can make your tree grow pretty big really fast :)
Wow! Lucky, lucky you :) Wish I could have a find like that ;)

One of the people I found (I don't understand all this 'twice removed' stuff) has 24000+ people in her tree   - I wish there was some way that you could just copy and paste information from someone else's tree to yours rather than having to either write it down or keep flicking between the two trees.
Oh, and one rellie I found (by marriage) is an actor, and I have even seen him on TV (but he's not famous).
Anyway, as the world is such a small place, I thought perhaps I'll put a little list here of the surnames I'm particularly interested in, in case anyone else here is looking for the same ...
Clark - Aylesbury/London
Carr - London/Sussex
Hastings - London
Martin/McEntee - Crossmaglen/Co Down/Armagh
You never know, if you find you've got a connection to us, you might be entitled to a share of our huge family fortune :P

You can ask them if they could send you the gedcom file and then either import it onto Genesreunited or if you have family tree software upload it and connect it to that.
I too found a rellie (second cousin twice removed) through Genesreunited and he allowed me access to his tree. I found rellies that I was unaware of and so did he.

Same here plus the first one I got in touch with had the wrong name for my grandmother and myself so I was able to give him that information.

how I do that ? I know how to import and export my own gedcom files back and forth but I've always done the same as Kate when I've found a connection Do I have to have their gedcom file on my PC

It's a great site, isn't it. I've found a few contacts through there. I've just been browsing though a new contact's tree and have found quite a few more names to add to mine. He has over 4,000 names which is huge compared to mine. He can add a couple more now from my teeny tree :D
I had a message on there a few weeks ago, asking about a name on my tree as they were researching on behalf of a friend. The friend turned out to be one of my first cousins

At the risk of showing my ignorance, what is a gedcom file and where do I get one from? B)
gedcom are a type of file like a jpeg or bitmap don't know what they are exactly but most family tree programs use them to share files I alter my family tree sofware prog offline then when I've made changes I upload it to genes ,Same when I changed to a new family tree program I was able to export my tree from genes on to my own pc with out having to enter everthing again
I've had 2 people contact me but both had less on their tree than I had:lol:
Can't always go by what someone has on their tree....I have 500 on my Family Tree Maker, and more on scraps of paper, notes on Word and in my head, but about 35 on my genes reunited...I just find it so boring to add the details. I usually do it when there is nothing interesting left to do. I do the FTM when broadband is down, but can't do that with GR. Saying that I have found two families through it, and am in touch almost daily with a cousin found through Rootsweb.
Katiepops - I'm on the trail of Clarks. Mine (well there DP's actually) hail mainly from Hurley in Berkshire though and ending up around Heathrow.
I've made a few useful contacts through GR, still prefer to hunt for people myself although I'm quite happy to copy parts of trees that it's nice to have but I'm not really interested in.

Maybe this explanation of Gedcoms wil help a bit
http://genealogy.about.com/library/weekly/aa110100a.htm
If it confuses you even more then basically if you are entering your family tree info into software, most programs allow you to "export" your data to gedcoms and save them - you can then share the gedcoms with others, upload them to sites like genesreunited, and transfer to other software programs.
On some genealogy sites you can save gedcoms directly from the sites to your computer, and then import to your software.
Hope that helps, I'm only just learning about them myself because I've only recently started using software that uses gedcoms. They do save a lot of work!

only registered with that site yesterday and had a email this morning from a woman who has told me we share the same great great great grandfather, she has lots of info on this side of the family as she has been researching it for years, and she'll let me know everything she has so far.
I registered with genes ages ago and had nothing but recently I have had a few contacts, although I am always a bit cautious. A few of the people who have contacted me have turned out to be no relation, but 1 recently seems to be quite promising.
I have been reluctant to pay the full membership fee (i'm a but tight when it comes to paying like this even though its really cheap).
Perhaps I should throw caution to the wind and join up fully and actually see this new contacts tree!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I may get somewhere!
Susanne
For the £7.50 it is, at least you can reply to people and elimate possible rellies. Will save you time in the long run. And even initially they may not be able to offer something, you never know they may have come across one of yours along the way.
I have just passed info over to one contact...her Amelia Piper we had info on that she didn't, because of work I had done years ago. Seeing her tree was like seeing a long lost friend again and catching up with what had gone on over the years!!!!

Have been popping in and out of this forum for ages. Well decided finally to register with re-united. Got some of my tree done...just need to chase up my Dad now - but hes never in when I need him!! Mum has not been really helpful yet....I am ever so slightly excited or nervous....I have rather an extended tree.....due to remarriages and cross relationships!!
Sonja there's supposed to be a good article in the mag you get from Wigan council this month. My dad read it out to me and huffed when I suggested I'd pack him off to Wigan family history shop to check out his side:lol:

that link was great I've now managed to download a privatizing ged com prog to filter out all the dates of living people on my tree before I upload to genes It means I have to have 2 files one private with all the details and the other puplic one that anyone can see
Well i've done it, i've registered and now able to contact others which I have done, so lets hope I get some good news.

I think Kate's idea of listing our surname interests here is a great because you never know you might already have information about someone else's relatives.
The surnames I am researching are:
Breeze - Herefordshire and LLandewwi Ystradenny, Radnorshire
Farmer - Kimbolton,Herefordshire
Morris - Llandewwi Ystradenny, Radnorshire
Jones - Crickadarn, Breconshire
Smith - Lincolnshire and Middlesex
Youngs - India
Clarke - Whatfield, Suffolk and Glemsford, Suffolk
Gant - Whatfield, Suffolk
I am so lucky to have Smith, Morris & Jones!!
I've lots of info on the Morris, Clarke & Gant families and am desperately looking for info on the Youngs family.
Let me know if I can help
Elaine
Here's my list of names
Berks - Clark
Bucks - Blackman, Elstone, Poole, Rodwell, Bates
Middx - Clark, Bates
Glos - Kitchener
Oxon/London - Burchell, Holliday
Yorks - Crowcroft, Lazenby, Mudd, Jackson, Kiteley
Who knows where before 1908, possibly Middx or Surrey - Bates!

Mine gets confusing because I have two lots of Linnell's, one lot from Hargrave/Rushden/Leighton and one lot from Silverstone/Towcester.
They're not related (well I hope not anyway).
some of the names I'm researching
Just a thought everyone. Its a great idea to post the names we are looking for on here, but perhaps we need to start a new thread just for that purpose as not everyone will be looking in this thread.
Susanne
your right I've started a new thread

wow received an email yesterday from a lady who i originally contacted through genes reunited as every name I searched for had her name next to it ifswim, well anyway I now have 8 generations to add to my great grandfathers mums side, so it was well worth me registering I think:)
How fantastic to find that much in one go, it'll take quite a bit to digest it all though!!!

I thought I was being clever when I imported a relative's gedcom file into my family tree into Genes Reunited. I lost all my hard work and ended up with their tree. So, I thought I'd put all my names back in which I did, however, it always opened on the person who was the link. IYSWIM Instead of being my family tree it was in the name of Joe Bloggs. Genes Reunited weren't much help. There was a way around it and if someone wants to know please email me as my fingers will hurt if I type it all down!!!
Good luck

Just noticed this thread which is quite spooky as today I was checking out my hot matches, found one and now have access to a tree with 204 names on that I havent got! Been a member for a while, but only recently have my hot matches been any good..
What bugs me though is when the hot match says you have eg 4 matches but it will only show you 1!! If you could see the other 3 you could really check properly!!

I joined ages ago and had some success but recently have been contacted by my mum's cousin, my dad's cousin and a very very distant cousin who has given me loads of info and I chat to him pretty much every week! (and he lives just up the road!) How cool is that!
Everyone has been so helpful and I've been able to really expand my family tree because of it.....even now though I'm still stuck on some bits of it!
