Years ago I went somewhere in London where you could check through actual birth ,marriage and death certificates so you could glean information without actually buying every certificate. I can't remember where this was does anyone have any ideas?

It's the Family Records Centre - http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/

I thought that you could only view the indexes, not the actual details, am I wrong? It will be great if I don't have to get the indexes - and good for the bank balance :) :) :) (more money for stash)

Actually I think you are right there! Although saying that a friend used to visit there and come back with all sorts of info for me and I'm sure it was the FRC, might be worth contacting them to double check :)
