hi all-

My mum gave me a copy of my great great grandfaters death certifcate today and on it it has his ocupation as a Estate Carter ?-

Does anyone know what one is ? - I have never heard of it before .

if anyone know - please feel free to leave a post .

Found this from old occupations:

Carter/Cartman Modern day van driver. Also sometimes someone who drove horse-drawn trams was called a Carman.

Prefix of Estate, would think either worked on a large estate, or perhaps farm.

Whereabouts did he live...might give you a clue. If you PM with his details I'll try and find him on Ancestry for the censuses which might help track his work over the years

you have just answered my question - i thought he was like a van driver - he worked for the 5th earl of the lowther family at the whitehaven castle estate -

if you don't mind , i will pm you his details and could you have a look on anstery for me .

A carter is someone who works with a horse and a cart on farms or in towns.
check out this website - it is aimed at scottish old occupations but am sure it would apply to English or Irish occupations as well .... I was looking for a Power Loom Tenter which basically is a mechanic that looks after apparatus mainly in a Loom Factory!

My great-grandfather was a Carman on the Southern Railway.
