OK I'm obviously being really thick! I've read the GENUKI page and still don't understand how I move forward.

I have 3 generations of birth certificates. So now what? My Grandfather was born 1908 so the latest census is out. I have his mothers name - where do I search or what do I do now?

Does his marriage licence have his fathers names on etc?

you'll need his fathers name and mothers maiden name in order to get a marriage certificate for his parents (It should be on his birth certificate) From the marriage you'll be able to find both of his grandfathers names You should then be able to find them on the 1901 census

let me know if you want me to look anything up on ancestry as i have a sub - pm me

if you know the district that they married in you can get one from the local office or
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp#0

do you have the year they married ?

Woot big break through - I found a relative on Genesunited who guided me through a search - we had different great granmothers listed! I discovered the BDM part on Ancestry.co.uk - this is really handy and free!

I discovered a new relative! Apparently my Great gransfather remarried which explains the difference I mentioned above. How exciting! This is great fun - I can see this being as addictive as scrapping!

thanks for the advice and offers of help.

The weridest thing I've found - a relative who was born in USA - his parents were from Lancashire and appear to have come back. Need to do some social history searching as they went to USA during the cotton famine (sounds a bit like - Jane Horrock family - same district - Rawtenstall). Manchester Library says its very unusual for them to come back.
