What would people view as the best site when tracing missing ancestors? Ive got a few gaps in my family tree which I would like to fill up, but am a little unsure as to which sites to use....

everywhere seems to lead to ancestry.co.uk these days! They have 1851-9101 censuses and BMDs.

Although for BMDs I tend to use free BMD first as that allows you to cross reference your marriages ie only show those 'fred bloggs' who married 'georgina's, or 'smiths' which narrows the search down greatly. The births I deaths info is better too. If you can't find it there then I would try ancestry.

Are they in Sussex? Another thought is the local family history societies.

I would kill for a search engine that you can plug in all the names you know in the family and it would bring you up the census results that match! It's a pest having to search on one name and then check the rest of the family to see if it's the one (or not as in all the cases!)

Same here and I also wish they had taken Cesus' in the 1700's!

I have to vote for 1837online it's given me a lot more than Ancestry has because you can view original documents and decipher stuff whereas Ancestry just seems to leave it off completely. But I couldn't have got rough dates without Ancestry giving me census info and once I've found specific info it's a lot easier to read on Ancestry ;)

Jem it's funny cos I much prefer ancestry to 1837.com. I find it much easier to use!

My mum's dad's mum's dad was impossible to find on Ancestry, I used 1837 and went through about 6 years worth of birth entries before I found him, the page is nearly ineligible and when I cross referenced it with Ancestry it came up ...*not worth checking unless recopied.

Have you tried the mailing lists on www.rootsweb.com. There are lists for every country...then county and more. I have had great help from all the lists I subscribe to and learn from everyone else's messages too.
