I saw this site this week which may be of interest to anyone doing a family history. It is a map of the UK with the 1881 and 1998 (?) census results showing where your family surname was most concentrated. The site is busy as it is quite new but I think it's worth the wait.

I haven't managed to peel myself off the computer ever since I had the email from Ancestry lastnight. I've suddenly got heaps more info on my side of the family :D

Don't mind it's a bit slow as it is free and saves a trip to London or trawling the fiche. Found that if you cannot find what you want I clicked on the thread at the top for the year/alphabet letter to find what I wanted.

it is good being able to search from the comfort of your own home rather than sitting in front of those fiches for hours on end

not just subscribers!" Thanks for letting us know. I've found some interesting stuff, but is there a way with a birth etc. to find out any more than the name and date of birth (e.g. who the parents were, their dates of birth)?

From the info there, no. Unless it is fairly recent you can get a mother's Maiden name. The certificate themselves would give some more info/clues for the next search. Census also give clues to the parents, 1881 is on line foc

Census also give clues to the parents, 1881 is on line foc Thanks. Where's the best place to get maximum free 1881 census information online?
(I Googled and one site you had to pay for, another directed me back to Ancestry.com which had very similar information from before, but with the last letter of the surname different, and suggested I'd have to pay for more info...)

try that they have 1881 + other info
good luck
I've been trawling through the BMDs at my mothers, much quicker on broadband than my dial up connection. I've found there are pages missing so I've just had to get more credits on 1837online but they will last ages now.

I thought this, but then found that I could turn the page to get further pages. Sorry

Thanks for this - just tried it out.
How far are you meant to be able to get for free though ? When I tried to view an 'image' it started asking me for HUGE sums of money so I'm either not doing it right or have asked for too much.... ;) Any ideas ?
Discovered as well that my GGGrandfather was inconsiderate enough to be born in 1836 - just a year too early !!!

I was on and off that site yesterday found quite a bit out just need to work out how to get the certificates without the full date.
but I did notice if you go into some of the census pages it says subscribers only I was looking on the 1871 census but I had to pay to view. but I did find what I wanted and a lot more so I guess it was worth the £5

If it was only £5 I may have paid but they were asking me to subscribe for about £20 EVERY month ;) I'm not that committed to my genealogy yet, particularly when there is so much free stuff out there !! :D

Vicky
There are different subscription options, and you would need to choose the Pay per View option - you get to view 10 images (to be used within 14 days) for a one off payment of £4.95.

Thanks Kerry - didn't see that one.... could be that because I'm searching from Canada they don't offer me the same deals, all I could find were monthly and annual subscriptions on offer. Will have to have another look later :)

You could try the 14 day free trial. I found out quite a lot that way. I just cancelled before the trial was up.
Watch out if you do the free trial. If you take it out on ancestry.co.uk you have to phone up to cancel it. With the american site you trawl through lots of info to find that non-americans can email to cancel. If you don't cancel in time you could see the full year's amount coming off at once.

Oh dear......I wish they hadnt put this free index system on....I cant tear myself away from the thing now  I've looked up sooooooo many people now & so many census finds......its way too addictive. I've done nothing else for the last 2 days!!!
Its time to pay per view now....somehow I dont think £5 is going to be enough

Addictive as scrapping!!!!!!
LOL
I was into genealogy long before I took to paper stroking/stash accumulating  & am still as addicted. I have folders & folders worth of 'guff' about my family ancestors, most is well organised, some 'odd bits' & some very loose ends that might just one day tie up with something else!!
'All is cool' as they say.
wow what an exciting couple of hours I've just had looking up all the ancestors
