Doggie Bag Swap

Host: Alison Lee

Status: Running
Maximum Particpants: 30 (3x10)

Details
This swap is for anyone who wants to build up their doggy stash. Each member will buy £5.00 worth of dog scrapbooking stash.

There will initially be a group of 10 people but Alison will do three groups of 10 if there is enough demand.

When signing up it would be helpful if you gave some details of your dog to help with the splitting of the stash, i.e. if you have a dalmation you might not want stash with spaniels on etc. Alison will do her best to send people stash appropriate to them.

When you send your stash could you please include a label with your address and enough postage of the same value it cost you to post to me. I will re-use the packaging.

Completion By:
Send by 28th February in order for completion on 7th March (or as soon as each groups are received)

**Please leave the first message below this for the host to post!**

me, me, me, me, me.......

but then I'm sure you were expecting me to appear

I have a liver-spotted dalmation, who can be seen on the one and only LO in my gallery as of yet. But hope to get some more scrapping done this weekend at the Canny Crafts retreat

Do we just buy anything in the way of stash? The boy/girl embellishment was split up so that one person bought buttons, one bought ribbon, one bought brads, one did die-cuts (and I started to regret volunteering for that category in 2 groups!!!), and so on. Everyone did something different, so we were guaranteed a total mix of embellishment types back.

I'm assuming papers are out due to the implications of posting them???

Alison-Lee
18-01-2006, 07:36 PM
Hopefully we should all come up with something different doggy wise but if its easier for everyone to choose one item to buy then please let us know, i don't mind which way we go. Yes, I think papers would be out as the postage would be too much wouldn't it? I did receive one of those DCWV Kit in a Stack Dog Pack today which I ordered from Jillybeans, it was a 8x8 and its great!!

Hi Alison

Love the flashy doggie bag swap thingy!

I can either do the Junkitz Dog Bradz (long ones) can get about 200 of them for just over a £5 or for the same sort of price about 80 brass mixed dog themed charms - which one do you think would be OK , didnt want to go ahead with my purchase yet incase I was doubling up on something someone else has chosen already !

KarenJD
19-01-2006, 08:39 AM

Anita, the Junkitz dog brads sound great!!! Havn't got any of them.

Hopefully I've put everyone's names up, let me know if I've missed anyone out!

I'll add what people have got but don't worry if you have the same as there are alot of us!!!

AJH
19-01-2006, 10:31 AM
Hi Alison They are from the Junkitz range but are just their range of dog colours NOT with bones etc , just coloured brads but seeing as probably a few of us use the Junkitz dog range for scrapping thought they might do!! Is everyone in my group happy about them not actually being doggy looking?? If not I will stick with the charms!

julieann
19-01-2006, 11:23 AM
Alison I'll do a selection of Around the Block dog brads (7/8 pieces approx. each)

Shame about the K9 thread!!! but at least we can carry on our conversation on this thread until march.

I know you know what sort of dog I have Alison but so others know it is a Labrador (yellow) Murphy had his second injection today so means I can take him out very soon. Which will be lovely.

Can I ask what kind of work, it fascinates me?

19-01-2006, 10:08 PM
Yes Lucy is a Working Cocker Spaniel. She looks like a small version of a Springer Spaniel and historically they were used just like springers to flush the birds out. We don't work her ourselves but she has a great time finding the pheasants which she is mad about.

KarenJD
19-01-2006, 10:14 PM
Hi Alison

My labs and spaniel are also working dogs. Belle our spaniel sounds just like Lucy she loves pheasants too infact she loves anything that moves she even picked up my Yorkie, Hamish, when she got over excited in the snow last year! I have found some great doggie papers and wondered if they would be a good swap item? Maybe they are too difficult to send?

Are we all doggy mad or what!!

We have a railway track here in Norfolk that goes for miles and miles apart of which is opposite me. But today i took her in the car further up the track and she was flushing pheasants out of a couple of corn fields having a brilliant time. I didn't think much of it until two farmers came out and told me to call Lucy back as he was breeding the pheasants and said Lucy was scaring them and they might not come back. He apparently has shoots on his fields!!!!

Hi All

I have also joined the swap and I am just trying to search out some doggie stash at the moment!! And will let you know what I find!

I have a german Shepherd (although he is a cross) but you wouldn't really know ..... he is long haired and gorgeous .....

I take him agility training and when he actually wants to take part he is really great but recently he spends most of the night running around sniffing and weeing!!!!!! He is also a nightmare of the lead and has a tendency to wander off!!! But I love him!!!

Alison-Lee
20-01-2006, 03:39 PM
i just found this while searching for a dog blinkie!

What is a Dog?

Dogs spend all day sprawled on the most comfortable piece of furniture in the house. They can hear a package of food opening half a block away, but don't hear you when you're in the next room. They can look dumb and lovable at the same time. They growl when they are not happy. When you want to play, they want to play. When you want to be alone, they want to play. They leave their toys everywhere. They do disgusting things with their mouths and then try to give you a kiss. They go right for your crotch as soon as they meet you.

Conclusion: They're tiny men in little fur coats.

Alison-Lee
20-01-2006, 03:43 PM
And another one:

Dog property laws
1. If I like it, it's mine.
2. If it's in my mouth, it's mine.

3. If I can take it from you, it's mine.

4. If I had it a little while ago, it's mine.

5. If it's mine, it must never appear to be yours in any way.

6. If I'm chewing something up, all the pieces are mine.

7. If it just looks like mine, it's mine.

8. If I saw it first, it's mine.

9. If you are playing with something and you put it down, it automatically becomes mine.

10. If it's broken, it's yours.

I'm not to sure how Alison will do it. Have you tried the Scrapbookshop, artbase, paperarts, there's quite a few sponsor's selling different bits. Some let you search by theme, which makes life easier. Hope that helps you Heather. You could try putting an SOS in the marketplace (I think I 've got that right) to ask which sponsor's have a selection of doggie theme bit's.

Hi All

Just back from doggie training (and Alisons crop!! :)) so a great day with all of my fave things!!

He did a little bit of running off but recalled so well that I was shocked and couldn't think what to do after that!!!!

Anyway I love the idea of a doggie CJ but not sure how it would work as usually each CJ would have a diff theme in a group so that might be tricky???? But we may be able to think of various doggie topics ??

So far I have some fibre which is "doggie coloured" but its kind of an extra to with whatever else I get .... I will hopefully get to Hobby craft this week and I will be able to get some metal paw prints that are really cute . But I will let you know what I end up getting.

Could you also PM me the name of the ebay seller as I this sounds like a good resource for the future!!

Hope you are all well anyway!

julieann

Hi Bevvie sounds like you've had a great day. If Lucy ran off she'd just keep running esp if it's cat! Dh had her off her lead outside our house and she spottted a cat and ran like there was no tomorrow straight down the road. I wish I'd been here to see dh chasing Lucy chasing the cat. Of course they where both told off, I mean lubby hasn't any road sense!!! It's nice when they actually do as you ask.
A CJ would be nice but not done one before and I know someone said about it taking sometime. Although that doesn't really matter. What would it entail???? Actually I'm sure i've seen a puppy dog tails CJ thread, have I?

Gosh don't I ramble! LOL

bevvie
22-01-2006, 12:05 AM
Hi Julie

 @ hubby chasing dog chasing cat!!! It must have looked like something from a cartoon!!

I can actually say Kane ignores me completely and often spends most of the class running around sniffing and weeing!!! If it wasn't for the fact that it is all enclosed I am not so sure I would take him as off the lead he has a tendancy to wander off!! But he has got better since doing the training (but not much) LOL!!

TraceyJ
22-01-2006, 12:13 AM
To complete a CJ can take several months. There is a specific thread all about them on the forums somewhere...put in a search - it's sure to come up!;)

You normally have around 10 ppl per group...you can do it with one single theme....doesn't have to be different for each person...although you will have to change your LO's for each CJ or the next people in posting order will KNOW what they are getting...which spoils the surprise!!

I did 2 CJ's last year....my normal scrapping LO's suffered cos of the time taken up doing AND thinking about designs for the CJ's....I have decided not to do anymore for the time being. They were fun though!:D

bevvie
22-01-2006, 12:27 AM

Actually thats a good point Tracey they could be the same theme... I am currently doing 2 (well one hasn't started just yet) I am doing it in the crop I go to so it will not be too bad as can always work on it when I am there each month!!

I know what you meant by it taking time away from normal scrapping though!! but I do love them..... I sometimes find I get a little stale with doing the same layouts all the time so its good to do something different!

julieann
22-01-2006, 12:54 AM
I don't need a CJ to take time away from scrapping. I've spent the past 3 hours on here mainly trying to do some shopping (there has to be an easier way to find who's got what!)

Tell me if let's say the theme was 'Doggie Holidays' it's the best i can come up with at this time of night. I'd do a page in my CJ send it on etc then when i get someone ele's I do a completely different LO?????? Probably not now making any sense!

bevvie
22-01-2006, 12:59 AM
Yep Basically thats it ... if we all had the same theme ..... So if we all did say a layout of our own dog ... we would change it each time the next one came ....

If the themes were different ... (I can think of several diff themes for doggies ... I agree its getting late and I have had a couplf of Jd's while sat here lol) by definition the LO's would be different ....

I think that sort of makes sense  !!!!!

Just found out about training classes for Murphy, they start on Thursday next week. Looking forward to it, but it is 6 years since I had to do any training!!!

Sam - I chickened out on Lucy's training And made dh do it i sat and watched. She was the most disobedient one there, and has been ever since. You'll be fine he's already good at command's, it'll be fun for him meeeting other pooches.

That'd be me;) I have a brindle at present...but in the past I have had a black, blue, fawn and Boston...never a harlequin!! Always quite fancied one...but didn't find one when looking...all mine have been rescues;) harlequins have temperament problems and health issues though...another reason I didn't try TOO hard to find one:lol:

My spaniel really doen's mind having her photo taken in fact she likes to push in when i am taking one of something else. Mind you it might be that seh just wants the attention. That really seems to be a spaniel thing! It doesnt matter which of the dogs you speak to or what you are doing she has to be in the middle of it getting all the attention. Well better get going and get everyone sorted before I go. Jodie (the mummy Lab) and Belle (The spaniel) are sitting here eyeing up my breakie!

Out of allthe photo's I've taken of Lucy I've only got 1 decent one. i use it as my screen saver. I'll have to try and size down and update my avatar. We had got in a bit of a mess with her coat so she had to be clipped (okay shaved) right down. She reminded me of Butch off the sooty show!!! And at the time was dubbed the Thug she was very naughty for a while (I suppose you could say she let her hair down LOL)!

I've just taken her out for a walk only round the block (reculantly) she spent most of the time with her head trailing along the all the grassy bit's. She didn't like it when she had to have her face washed! I think if she was human she'd be a tomboy!!!!!

Morning ladies, sorry havn't been on here today. Had abit of a crisis this morning with Lucy. Went for our usual walk but she got the scent of a pheasant and disappeared chasing it. I waited five minutes and then she came running back with her tail under covered in blood!! Well you can image I panicked. Her collar had gone as well!! Anyway I wiped her mouth and it looks like she had bit her tongue so that was alright but when i got her home she couldn't walk properly and her back leg looks funny so I am taking her to the vets in half an hour. Will post on here later after the vets!!

PS: She's feeling very sorry for herself!!

Oh dear...typical hunting dog!

Does she have a docked tail?? I'm not a fan of them....but this is why they used to dock them - cos they got caught in bushes and undergrowth while hunting/fetching game....IMO should ONLY be done on working stock...no need "NORMALLY" for pets to be docked.

Hope she is ok....might have a bit of shock...keep her warm;)

Hiya hope Lucy is OK Alison. Our spaniel is forever getting little cuts and grazes but usually they are fine. She did get a nasty barbed wire tear under her back leg on boxing da. It went right into the muscle but she has made a full recovery now. They heel really well so I'm sure Lucy will be fine.

Hi everyone thanks for well wishes. Well, got back from the vets £23.00 lighter! The vet gave her a thorough examination and couldn't find anything major wrong thank goodness. She t hinks that Lucy might have got hit by something because of her slight pains in the legs and a graze under her chin where she might have rolled etc and lost her collar. She's on pain killers but walked okay from the v ets to the car!! And yes, shes feeling VERY sorry for herself!!!

Hunib, received your gorgeous stash just now.

Can't remember if there was someone on here who was after doggy coats, but while I was in the vets there was a leaflet about a company who makes them to measure! The address is www.petcreations.co.uk.

It is very common for pups to suffer dicky tums during teething!;) Just as babies do:) We had really bad tums with our CKCS's from 8 wks to 5 months...then it settled down.

ALL my dogs regardless of breed are fed on the same food...a dry complete food (which i soak tea times for my virtually toothless Papillon - but she eats dry for brekkie) by BURGESS it is the LAMB variety of supadog and costs me £9-00 for 15kg!

A lot of the more expensive foods can be too rich ....they are VERY igh in protein and ridiculously priced! Your dog does NOT need to be on a puppy food at her age (don't know if she is) ...it is a complete myth that they do!! I would find a LOW PROTEIN basic food and give that a try....low price....then if that doesnt suit...go up the scale price wise....HOPEFULLy you can find something that suits at the bottom end of the price range..... avoid tinned meat like the plague.....apart from OFTEN causing runny poops it is usually around 70 - 80 percent moisture...which basically means WATER!!! So you are giving you dogs plenty of liquid...but not a lot of food;)

Out of interest...what foods HAVE you tried??

cw18
27-01-2006, 01:01 PM
Due to their susceptibility to Kidney Stones a Dalmation has to be on a low protein diet. We started ours with the basic kibble from our local pet shop (having made her drag the bag out to check the content), so if you have a good local shop they're possibly worth a try first. Due to allergies (not proven to be food related, but not disproven either) we have since had to move him over to the James Wellbeloved, which is both low protein and anti-allergy. £2.00+ a kilo, and he has around the half kilo a day -- not cheap, but cheaper than keep heading off to get steroids from the vets! Our local shop does lamb, duck or turkey. Pets At Home -- although more expensive -- also do fish which he loves, so we forked out for it over Christmas

TraceyJ

Of the "expensive range" i too think JW is a good food...my fave to raise my litters of pups on tho was NUTRO!! ;)

Just reading through the thread about dog foods.... I would never feed a dog on dried food only as the only dog we ever did that with (she had Iams Uekanuba ... prob spelt worng ) was incredibly ill in later life. So I always feed my pooch tinned with a mixer .... but then to be honest he has so many scraps and treats overall I guess he has quite a balanced diet

Alison-Lee

Took Lucy for a little walk on her lead this morning, not very happy with me! She is walking okay but I noticed she wasn't going very fast and she has a hard job jumping onto her chair. Kids still off sick and DH home and has made a start decorating DS bedroom so you can image the mess. Think I might disappear later upto the craft shop feel the need to treat myself!! My local craft shop is less than five minutes away!!! Its part of a large garden centre and has coffee shops, gift shops, kitchenary shops and a pet shop, what more do you need. Need to buy Lucy a new collar as well and maybe a treat or two!!!

Hi

I have just been catching up on the psts.

Sorry to hear about Lucy Alison I hope she is feeling better soon.

Murphy and I went to the first training class last night. He had a great time!! and it was OK for me too!!! I ended up buying him a harness yesterday as he is pulling a lot on the lead. I did consider a halty but after what happened with Monty I dont think using a halty would be ideal as i t would make me worry too much.

I am another one that preferes dried food as I cant stand the smell of tinned. Our last dog Monty in our avatar was on Eukenuba (prob spelt wrong) up to 2 years of age and then went onto bakers.

Murphy is on puppy Super dog with a tiny amount of tinned mixed in (which will be phased out soon)

MrsRotty
27-01-2006, 02:48 PM
Sam,
what happened to Monty regarding the halti? We were thinking of getting one for Ace when she is bigger, but I don't know anyone who has tried them.

Ali

TraceyJ
27-01-2006, 03:13 PM
I SWEAR by Halti's!!!! But with a loooooong check chain attached too as back up...and if dogs running free take them off!!

A harness will NOT stop your dog pulling...in fact it often encourages it! The strongest part of the body for an animal to pull with is around their shoulders!!;) Think of horses with carts....or huskys with sleighs!

I banned the use of harnesses in my training classes....but highly recommended Halti's ;) Just my opinion of course.....but I did teach obedience;)

hi everyone thanks for all the puppy food advice :)had to take coco to vets today as poops was not good at all poor thing came out £73.00 lighter and was told she had the runs yeah i know maybe i should be a vet i could of told them that the vet said she thinks she has a parasite in tummy so have to have poops checked because breeder fed here ox liver and heart with a bit of dried food as her diet? she has prescribe her a hills science priscription diet which is in a tin its not like dog food but quite solid coco seems to like it so thats good hopw it all works out we are so worried

tracey we have tried all the above mentioned foods plus bakers and natures choice which was ok untill vet told me to give her more as soon as we did that it all went to pot

I think Haltis are probaly great,

I have owned a few dogs and have always trained my dogs well enough not to have to have a halti or check chain.

A harness will probably NOT stopping a dog from pulling but that is not my reason for using it, until my 11 week old dog (puppy) learns to go for a walk and stop pulling (with the help of treats and encouragement) which will not happen in his 1st week of walkies i find a harness helpfull for me to control him using a collar aswell.

However in a couple of months time if he isnt learning I may consider a halti but at the moment I am giving him a chance before using a halti.

julieann
27-01-2006, 09:26 PM
just catching up. Can I ask what's a halti?????

I'm sure if you ladies knew half of what Lubby gets away with you would go bananas. First she's the fussiest eater. I have put cheese or ham with her dry mix to get her to go near it!! Tonight she ate a chicken breast (free range!!!). and Tracey i'm ashamed to say Lubby is also the most disobeint pooch. I use a harness only because I couldn't bear the thought of choking such a sweet little thing!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think the word you're all looking for is MAD! The only thing is she hates going for a walk and hides. But I adore her, and she's my first can you tell?

TraceyJ
28-01-2006, 12:52 AM
Vets prescribing food should be banned! sorry but it should!! 99% of the time the recommend the food that they get commission on!! Hills science diet is HIGHLY over rated!! Mainly by the vets that sell it!

I'm not saying it is BAD.....in fact maybe I shouldn't say anymore!;) I'm ok talking about doggy matters to people if I get to know them better....but otherwise I sound like some old ogre! I just have a major problem with rip off vets! I'm so sorry you have had to fork out so much money Lara...its a disgrace !!

I am SURE Little coco will improve with time AND a much cheaper diet!!!;)

A harness will NOT stop your dog pulling...in fact it often encourages it! The strongest part of the body for an animal to pull with is around their shoulders!!;) Think of horses with carts....or huskys with sleighs!

Aero goes out on a Halti, which was recommended over a harness by my SIL, our vet and the pet shop for exactly this same reason. Saw a woman with a lab a couple of months ago, and she was fighting him on the harness she had. Suggested she tried a Halti for this reason, and have since seen her coping much better now she's swapped

just catching up. Can I ask what's a halti?????

A lot of people think our dog is wearing a muzzle when he has his halti on, but it doesn't stop him opening his mouth at all like a muzzle would. Basically all it means is that if he starts to pull we give a sharp tug and it pulls his read round to one side (like using the reins on a horse to turn) and that stops him pulling, That's the theory anyway.... but it depends what he's seen in practice, but normally does the job just fine.

There's a pic and write up about them here (http://www.companyofanimals.co.uk/halti.php) which might explain it better !!!!

I am SURE Little coco will improve with time AND a much cheaper diet!!!;)

the food seems to have done the job over the last 24hrs i trust my vet at the moment but things could change if they dont help us get coco sorted the tinned food is 88p a tin doesnt seem much to me but maybe it is ? ;) i just want the poor little thing enjoy her food without having to dash out the back a bit rapid

On the subject of Haltis, I've just bought a Gentle Leader fro Merlin. Is it the same thing? (Saw it on that dog training programme last week with the 2 black labradors). Merlin was pulling like a train!!! Our fault becasue we had him on an extending lead as a puppy, which we ditched when it broke when he saw a sheep! Well, the gentle leader has worked like magic! He doesn't like it at all - he shakes and paws at this face, but I'm using it for slightly longer periods on the walk each time so hopefully he will get used to it soon. He likes to have his head down sniffing all the time (like a bloodhound!!), and gets into a world of his own from which we can't even entice him with treats. Normally he'll do anything for the smallest treat. He is a flat-coated retriever btw, and quite a big dog.

Oooooooh our last dog was called Merlin ... it is funny, I always assumed we were the only people to have thought of that name LOL ... our new pup is called Wallace, and just yesterday I met a woman in the park, and she said he was the second cocker pup called Wallace she had met that week!

He's called Merlin because he is such a Magical Dog!!! Actually, the breeders called him Merlin, and we loved it, so kept it.

Linda....YES...a Halti is a brand name for head collar like the gentle leader!;)

hollybo
28-01-2006, 02:56 PM
haltis are great but cant be used on certain breeds, anything with a short nose or a squashed face or even saggy chops(what i call the skin under the mouth) shouldnt really use a halti as it can cause more damage than good, mr darcy has to wear a special harness, there is too much skin for a collar although he doeasnt pull at all. holly has a harness purely because of her build a collar would slip easily but she also doesnt pull.
as for food i have never given a tinned dog food in my life, i give my dogs a feed of wilsond complete in the morning(left overnight in boiling water) and a small feed of bakers complete in the evening. my mother in law has fed her dogs tinned food for ever and she has 4 dogs of different breeds and ages with no teeth between them!

anyway i see my items have been recieved so thats good x x

Hi guys,
my last 2 dogs (another samoyed and a collie x) both went really well on haltis' as they both pulled a lot without.. but our current pooch, Juke, has a harness, cos he hardly pulls at all, so doesn't need a halti...but I would definetly recommend them... :)

Have to agree with tracy about rip off vets and the food they recommend... Seems to be 'horses for courses' with food, just have to keep trying till you find something that suits.. both my Sams have thrived on diets of cheap as chips 'Chappie' dried food, tried loads of brands (including Hills and James Well beloved (sp?) which are ridiculously expensive) and Chappie is the best for keeping them regular... (you really don't want runny bottoms with Samoyeds -white fur and raised tails - well, you get the picture LOL! ) But we have always fed a varied diet of scraps aswell, reducing the amount of dried food appropriately, which keeps them interested and adds other nutrients to their diets...my Mum read a really interesting book by a dog behaviourologist who swears by a scraps diet with lots of UNCOOKED bones for sorting out all sorts of doggy problems...

BTW my Sams favourite food is ... Carrots! well, virtually any vegtable actually, he'd have a carrot over a piece of meat any day! Weird huh  !

We called ours Merlin as hubby loved the legends of King Arthur ... an we were always worried about him disappearing when he was a puppy!
The breeder named our latest one Wallace, we added Bruce, just in case it was not Scottish enough already :D :D

Yes I looked into that as well. 'Raw Meaty Bones' I even gave Merlin some uncooked chicken wings for a while. He absolutely loved them, two bites and they were gone- you could even give them while they are still frozen!! Supposed to like in the wild diet, very good for teeth, obesity, diabetes etc! (They'll be telling us to eat it soon!) My friend who is a dog trainer feeds her dogs exclusivley on RMB. I decided it wasn't for me in the end. <_< I stick to Royal Canin dried food, which is probably very rich and very expensive......But it's convenient :)

TraceyJ
28-01-2006, 06:41 PM
THing is with the BARF diet...yes "BARF" - the raw food and bones thingy...you need to add MASSES of vitamins, supplements etc to make sure your dog gets all the nutrients it needs. Can't be ar**d myself!

I have a real problem with feeding chicken bones to dogs ... they are "SUPPOSED" to be safe if they are uncooked...but I have known of too many dogs getting bones stuck in their throats and intestines for me to even contemplate giving them to my dogs!

Like was said before..."horses for courses" We all have our preferences;) Life would be dull if we were all the same:D

Definitely looks like an on-line shop will have to be done for this swap. Took the car for a 'post repair' test run this afternoon -- which ended up at Hobbycraft. The only doggy 'stash' I saw were some buttons which worked out at 50p -- so would have only been one button each :(

Morning all,
Yesterday afternoon we went up to Wood Green Animal Shelter to look for another dog! We are hoping to get an older 'laidback' pooch who can be company for Juke and hopefully give him a little confidence - as he is a big wus, scared of going out of the house a lot of times!
We were hoping to see a few older greyhounds, as the rescues are normally swamped with ex racers, but this is the third time we've been out looking and we've only seen one possible so far - flippin' typical huh! Great news for the dogs looking for homes, as generally there have hardly been any available at all, but annoying for us LOL! Anyone got any experience with greyhounds in general and ex racers in particular?

TraceyJ
30-01-2006, 12:51 PM
Oh Nicci..PLEASE look at the many tears site!!!!! They have a gorgeous little whippet in ...as well as MANY other older dogs desperate for homes!! We home vet ALL OVER the country!!!!!

30-01-2006, 12:52 PM
Nicci, if you want to know anything special I can try and find out. One of the guys I work with has a racer, and I believe knows a lot of people who have ex-racers as pets.

The only thing I remember being told (I suggested one when hubby wanted a dog, as he wanted one to walk for miles with and I didn't want a big & heavy one) was that they're not into long walks!!!!

TraceyJ
30-01-2006, 12:52 PM
Adding on....

Greyhounds make fabulous pets....despite what people think they need VERY little exercise!! They are basically couch potatoes. I can give you a number for Greyhound rescue if you want it!;)

Alison, has my stash arrived yet? It was dalmation brads, some die cuts and some stamps, if I forgot to include my name in it? It was posted one week ago tonight, mind you, I just popped it in a wee post box in a housing estate, not at a main post office, and maybe it doesn't have daily uplifts?

Hi Tracy, welcome to our swap. Am feeling better today, headache and neck ache just about gone but when I got up this morning my back went!!! Took Lucy out for a walk and its easing up. Unfortunately I have to go to work today as they are short of people but I only work as a MSA at our local school at lunchtimes so its not too long.

Got the rat man from the Council coming later as we have seen a great big rat in the back garden and don't want to put bait down because of Lucy.

Thanks for all the replies about greyhounds, will get back to you with any specific queries once we're nearer finding one (BTW TraceyJ - would love to get one from Many Tears, but we need to be sure the prospective newbie dog gets on with Juke the 'wus' samoyed, so don't think it would be fair to lug them back up and down the M4 if there is a major problem...other problem is if I go there I will need to come home with Betsy the bassett hound and OH wouldn't be happy with 2 new dogs LOL! :D )

ooooh, no alison, hate rats  !

Hi ladies. Received Scrapmad2005 goodies this morning. Getting quite a pile now!!

Rat Man from Council came and put a box trap down with bait inside. Had to make it secure so Lucy wouldn't get to it. He gave me a leaflet with the antedote on it just in case!!! Coming back next week to check, ugh!!!

Feeling alot better today and even managed to go shopping with my friend! had to have a quick look in Lakeland but they didn't have anything new.

Was wondering if anyone wanted to do the swap twice as we have four spaces left in the third group and it might make it easier to sort out for me! Let me know. The first four to post are in!!!

Forgot to say. In Superdrug they had alot of Xmas things still on sale. Anyway, I got Lucy a present. For £2.49 they had a set of dog collar, lead and tag with diamantes on! The collar says 'woof' spelt out in diamantes, cool or what! Special occasions only though, NOT for walks in the wood.

Hi everyone

I have some news! We took Juke to meet the greyhound we are hoping to adopt and they seemed to get on fine! he is called Jak and is 7 years old (which is quite old for a greyhound..) He is an ex racer but has lived as a pet for the last couple of years and has ended up needing rehoming only because of a marriage split up. He is a real sweetie  , with a laidback character, good on the lead and not too bouncy, which is what we need for Juke as he is such a cowardy dog LOL :P
The lady at the rescue place says he is her star dog :D (the best natured and most obedient there!).. so we are relly hoping it will work out... the only negative we've had is that he has an enlarged prostrate, does anyone know of this problem and what it may mean  ? He has been at the kennels for nearly 2 months and thay say it has caused him no problems and they checked with his old vets and they say it has never had to be treated... so the HULA rescue centre don't think it should effect him, but felt they had to inform us about it...
I will let you know how Jukes next meet with him goes, but if it is fine then we will go over one last time next monday and then take him home with us! We're very excited (can you tell - LOL!).. Here are some pics of him... (he's a little cold in the second pic, without his coat in the shade! aahh bless,)

TraceyJ

Oh he looks so sweet....and white like Juke too! Re the prostate problem....personally I would have him checked out by your vet asap - they can go on for sometime without problem - but it can also become a MAJOR and very expensive problem. Here ( http://www.darwinvets.plus.com/dogs/oldermaledog.htm) is an article about it for you to read. If the dog is NOT already castrated I would get him booked in ASAP!;)

Hi everyone

Update on our new greyhound...
well Jak passed all our meets and greets with Juke, our house passed the visit from the greyhound rescue trust (and he was very helpful and gave us lots of info and a good book - 'Living with greyhounds') so we brought him home yesterday... and, so far he has been wonderful :D ! The only downside is that just before we took him, they discovered he was actually more like 10, not 7  (they checked out the tattoes in his ears) - they said we could change our minds, but we had fallen for him by then  and anyway, the older he is the quieter most likely, and easier to settle in with our cowardly Samoyed!! He will have a good home with us for however long he lives...

Pictures below... he is already very happy on the sofa (as you can see! ) and Juke doesn't seem worried by him at all, in fact Jak is more wary of Juke (especially when he barks suddenly LOL!) which is good, because he lets Juke do everything first...

Me and OH are taking the week off between us to help Jak settle in, but by the end of the week we will try leaving him for a little while.. don't think it will cause him much stress, as he will probably just sleep and he has Juke for company... but we will have to wait and see.

We have ordered a muzzle for him to walk him in for the first few weeks until we are sure he doesn't object to other dogs and we will take all your advice and won't let him off the lead for a long while. Good new is he seems to be good at recall in the home (but obviuosly that doesn't mean it will be the same out on a walk!)...

Will update you again in a few days... :D

Oh Nicci he looks great, it doesn't take them long to take over does it!!!

Not long to go girls, got a few more parcels to come and then I will have the great job of sorting everything out. The packets are sitting in my dining room and the temptation is great!!!
