View Full Version : I need a little help for my mil
We used some of the links tonight to find her grandfather and his parents. Her grandfather died in WW1 in 1917. If he died abroad- would he have been registered there- or as he was in the army would the records be here? Can I find any military details anywhere. He was only 22 when he was killed.
Kim if he was a British soldier his war records etc will be here. Try the commonwealth war records link in the useful links thread. This should tell you a little more info and give you (hopefully) a reference number that you can then ask the relevent people for his records. Its a couple of years ago but I managed to find my Great Grandfather's information, discovering when and where he died (France, 1919). Then I was able send away for his records and found all about him including the fact that he couldn't remember the right ages of his kids, and that he died from schrapnel wounds to his left buttock!
This is the site - Commonwealth War Graves Commission (http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/search.aspx)
thanks for that- I will try to look for that for her. It would be great if I could find that sort of information for her. I imagine his grandmother must have been really young as he had three children and he died aged 22- so they can't have been that old, so she probably never knew her dad. It's so sad.
I've just had a go at trying to remember where I went for the national records but came up with a blank - I think they got passed to another office type thing. So I'm not much more help, sorry.
Thank you so much for those links- we have been able to find the details of his grave and there is a photo of it for her- and the cemetery. I will pass on the details to her.

Kim,
It might be worth phoning the overseas department at the ONS in Southport. They found my grandfather's brother in the Boer War and I hadn't even known for sure that he was there. Maybe they do the same for WW1. I think it cost about £11 for a death certificate.

That has been a very interesting evening- so many thanks. Does anyone know whether you can find records of mentions of despatches anywhere online as I know her own father was mentioned in despatches in the second world war as he risked his life to go and rescue casualties. It would be nice to get details for her for that aswell?

It's the overseas section at the General Register Office in Southport that you need for teh death cert.
Have a look at channel 4....which has the link to names database for all the names on war memorials....it might tell you where it is, or even have a photo of it

You could see if he was mentioned in the Gazette (an official government publication, which has lots of official notices)

Thanks so much for this! I've just managed to find a load of details for someone, previously we only knew his name and that he died in WW2. I've now got an age, parents' names, date of death and the location of his grave - I just wish my uncle was alive to see this, he always wanted to know where his dad was buried :( I'm writing to try and obtain his service records now, my mum is over the moon.
