So, I have a set now, and the solution stuff and the Felt applicator.

I know I am incredibly blonde sometimes and I have seen some pictures but I need to hear from you who have done it before. I squish some of the ink onto the felt (how much? Is less more???) and if I want to have it less vibrant I squish some of the solution on as well, right?

Then I press the applicator onto whatever I want to alter. Does the ink last for more than 1 press or do I have to re-ink?

Also once you are done with the inking, I heard some say they use a heatgun to have the inks set.
Do you use the same felt thing again or dispose of it after each use?

Sorry if the questions seem stupid but that's me

Hi Kimmy
Not stupid at all - I'm guessing you don't have the TH DVD (that's how I know what to do - I just watched the God of Inks himself, in my own home  )
Squish some of the inks on, yes - how much depends on how big a surface you are covering - but you can always add more anyway, so best to err on the fewer rather than more to conserve your inks ;)
Prob best to have two or three colours on your felt at once - gives a nice effect. When you get more sets (notice the when, not if! ) you can also choose shades of the same colour for a more subtle effect.
Now dab the applicator onto whatever you are inking - just kind of dab it up and down, turn it around now and again, whatever you want really - you'll soon get the hang of it. When the ink runs out, you'll notice and that's when you add more if you want.
You might want to do more than one layer - eg TH does something on his dvd with 2 colours, then decides he wants to add a third, so does so on top (but not necessarily all over) - it really is a question of doing however much you want until you get the effect you want.
The blending solution lightens the effect and you can use it to clean up any spills, etc.
You can also use Krylon or metallic pens - just dab a bit here and there and it gets mixed in with the inks.
Can't see why you'd need a heatgun with the alc inks cos they dry very quickly....
As for the felt, I find it goes quite hard after its dries - I use it for whatever project I'm doing, and then throw it away once I've finished, by which time if often has lots of diff colours on it!
BTW, what colours did you go for in the end?
Any more questions, just fire away! :)

What wonderful information there Hils. :)

I have been reading one of the threads on these inks, and the ATC thread. So...(didn't need much persuation), and have ordered one set of the inks, raisin and 2 other colours, forget now. I didn't order the blending solution - do you think I should get some?

I'm dying to try them out, probably receive then next week.

Where can we purchase the TH video from please?

Cor, all these questions eh?

Glad you liked it ;) Blending solution - nah, you don't need it yet - maybe later. To be honest I've hardly used mine cos I love the vibrancy of the inks. I think if you're using the inks on transparent stuff you're less likely to need it, if you're doing it mostly on glossy card you might feel as if you want a lighter effect sometimes.
The TH DVD is available from lots of sponsors, and you can get it direct from Tim's website www.timholtz.com. You'd have to wait longer cos it comes from the States, but the advantage is that it comes signed by TH himself! There's a second one out at the end of this month too - guess who's ordered it already?! ;)

Is there a way of getting round having to spend so much on the felt applicators? Has anyone tried washing the felt. I've found normal felt soaks up the inks too much. I did try to make my own stamp to hold the felt, but failed. The Tim Holtz / shop bought one means you can give the paper/domino etc more of a whack!

Not yet no - I figured I would never get ANYTHING done ever again, juts keep watching Tim

I did try some inking yesterday and it looked kinda cool on my trasnparency but other than that it looked kinda poop...
Serves me right for only buying one set - the cabin browns (I have a thing for brown inks) but better be going to have a look at cre8tiveonline now.

sat and watched SIR TIM for 2.5 hrs at the NEC - the man is so calm, chatty and a pleasure to watch in action (crafting of course). He did me ( nd others LOL) a card I have in my gallery using the inks, the mixatives and his favourite saying stamp - am I gushing or what.

anyhow off to the point!

On applying the ink to the felt Tim recommends you do a two second squeeze and do not mix the inks on the felt - keep them seperate so you can tell where they are to reapply. The Mixatives ( you WILL get to em) are also fab - Sir Tim says that the metalic pens for his eye adds blobs rather than blending with the inks and the pearl changes the inks to pearlecent ( I have on back order!) - but you use a little less of these and MUST give a good old shake before applying to felt.

Oh am I a marketing persons dream or what - just lap it all up and order - spend spend spend. I got the DVD from the US as dollar price was same as £ and i was already ordering a shed lead of stuff from em!

OMG - before I went today I just started being a bit adventurous with the inks. On my ofrst attemot i sjust squeezed all of the together onto the felt and got nothing but one brown mess.

Anyhoo - today I started with the lightest colour in a couple of dots on the felt and tried it on a can....lordy, that looks already totally lush. I have to apply the other two tones tomorrow (erm, today) and see how that works out. I think I am going to get addicted to those inks

Tip from a friend

QUOTE
Try soaking felt in surgical spirit before adding any inks. It helps the inks to smoosh around a lot easier. hate it when the ink grabs the cardstock and won't budge! It is noce to smoosh and blend the colours sometimes, especially if you find a pretty colour combination. If you do get a result that you like, make a note of which colours you used so you can recreate them at a later date.

i did this for a class at Paperarts a couple of months ago and after trial and error discovered you only need the tiniest hint of colour. I applied the Blending solution to the Shrik Plastic first and then added only a drop or two of ink and let it spread

That seemed to work and the class loved playing with the inks :)

Does anyone know if the alcohol blending solution similar to surgical spirit? I've bought a few packs (1 pack if dh is watching!) of the inks and didn't think I would need the alcohol blending solution as my intention was to use them on metals and plastics and I believe that the abs is best used on shiny card. Sorry for going on, anyway I do want to use it for shrink plastic and read Emma's thread and now am wondering if I should buy it. It seems a tad expensive if it is similar to surgical spirit iykwim:)

Thanks Mollymoo, dh has looked at the site and says that he's not sure what the chemical reaction of the alcohol blending solution's ingredients are supposed to acheive and therefore cannot assess whether surgical spirit would be suitable and in short he said that it seemed a lot of trouble just to save a fiver - men  I might still ask at the chemist to see if there's something compatible. I received 2 sets of inks on the weekend, the ones that Trish or Sarah were talking about, with the cranberry in. They are bootiful! I've been trying them out, but think I may be dabbing in one area for too long, I don't mean minutes, but concentrating too long, then when I add another colour to the felt, together with the solution, I dab it on the paper, and it looks a bit cloudy. Maybe I just need to practice more. :)

Have yet to try them on the dominoes. Can't wait. I'm not addicted, ooooh nooo!

I bought my set of inks from The Stampan, should anyone want to try them. :)

If anyone is still wondering about a replacement for Blending solution, try a 500ml bottle of alcohol rubbing solution from chemist. It goes by the name of Isopropanol, BP and the big bottle is great if decanted into a small spray bottle and spritzed onto the inks.Costs about £4.50.
By the way I bought this alcohol stuff originally to use with ink pads to get a similar effect to the inks, has to be zapped with a heat gun though.

Well done you, I went to the chemist yesterday and spoke to a lovely man, who told me the same thing:) We had a chat about chemicals and he reminissed about the vapours  ;). It seems a lot more economical than the abs.

Stream is my favourite colour  I love butterscotch too - great that they're in the same pack! Had a look last night at all the colours you can get, and I've got all the ones I like best now - not sure I want the browns - I'm not usually a brown kind of girl, iyswim! and don't fancy using the black either - I think what I like about the inks is their vibrancy which is why I tend to go for the brighter colours :)

Hi ladies - just after some advice on the alcohol inks please.

I purchased 2 packs yesterday, along with a bottle of the isopropanol BP and found the felt sticky pads (furniture protectors) in the cupboard so was all setup to go! I made my first set of ATC's last night using the inks and I am very pleased with my results.

So nowe I am on a roll, and decided to make an altered clip board - have gessoed the main board and used 2 inks on the metal clip. But although it is dry, it rubs off.

What have I done wrong?? Should I prime the metal? I don't want to waste any more ink trying, so hope that one of you lovelies can advise me!

Hope you can help,

Juliex

Julie - not sure - I have used the inks on metal before and they have been very permanent - maybe the metal has some sort of protective coating? could you sand it a little?

03-02-2006, 03:21 PM
Not had that problem - as Sarah says, you could try sanding it. If that fails, how about sticking some foil tape over the top of the clip? That works beautifully with the inks, and because it is so thin you will be able to use your fingers to work it into any lines/patterns that are on the clip :)

Dee, :stop: don't get rid of your black, (at least until you have tried it) it looks fantastic if you just use one tiny drop here and there on your applicator felt with your other colours, gives a real depth to your colours. If you do want to sell your raisin though I would buy it off you. :)

sorry to hijack the thread!

Thank you Tracey, it is quite a new style for me, but I love it, so it is one I intend to master, hence me doing the house challenges in this way.

It was actually air-drying clay, not fimo, as I had a bit left from a scrapaholics class kit. I drew around some of the gold wings that paperartsy do, but bigger, then pressed the gold wing in to leave the feather impression in the clay, played with the edges a bit with my craft knife and dried it on the radiator because I am too impatient to wait 24 hours then painted them gold.

Hi KimmyS,
I dont know if im much help, but i have recently took to alcohol inks, and this is how i use them....
First i 'squish' the ink on the felt pad, depending on the size of my project to be inked and how vibrant i want it-as an example, i have 3 inks and i like to use them all, so if i were inking an atc,i would normally use about 3-4 drops of each colour on the felt-that will give me a generous amount of ink and a lovelly vibrant card.
So, once the ink is on the card-just dabbing the felt pad onto your project with a swirly motion until area to be inked is covered.
I then drop 2-3 drops of blending solution onto the same felt pad, and then basically go over the inked card-the inks will then 'merge' into each other-the result will be dependant on how much solution used and how much you go over the inks-experiment.
I dont own a heat gun so i dont know about using one (obviously i dont use one then!)but the inks do dry very very quickly, so i wouldn't have thought you would need to use a heat gun....?
I do use the felt again as only having 3 inks at the mo. i generally ink the same colour scheme, but i would have thought if you were going to ink differant projects in completley differant colours, it might be wise to use a differant pad for each one.
I hope this helps. Also, if you were unsure-the alcolhol inks work best on shiny material (sorry if you already knew this).
The fun thing about inks is their ease of use, so experimenting with them is fun and easy.
Have fun!

just in case any of you are considering buying some inks and need a hand deciding which colours to go for, here are the colour charts I made just by splodging a bit of each color onto a bit of white glossy card.

I'm missing two sets of the Ranger inks (the one with currant, slate & meadow, and the one with all browns) and about half of the Pinata inks, so it's not an exhaustive list, but it'll give you an idea....

Yeah that is what I thought to Hills. :) But since posting I have just been to try it out on a cheap collander from the £ shop in a small area and it looks brilliant but the inks seem to be rubbing of a bit if you are not careful how you touch it.

Does it need time to dry or something?
Viv

Hils
12-03-2006, 08:39 PM
Shouldn't need time to dry... If it is metal perhaps it has a seal over it which won't take the inks, if plastic perhaps it is a softer sort and they don't work well on it??? I've only tried them on hard plastic like dominoes and Junkitz tiles.....

hsanders

hmm its a stainless steel (or at least thats what the label said! ) colander. I think may be I shall splash out, buy another one and make sure I give it a really good wash and maybe this time a slight sanding and see if that makes a difference or not. ;) :)

Well you see its stuck on there and not like dripping off. *But* when I go to lift it up and sort of rub it (as if you was losing grip kind of thing!) it seems to be comping off.

Maybe its what this is made of or maybe my expectations are too high and I want it to be as if the metal is actually that colour rather than a surface treatment IYSWIM!:)

I was told that the 'proper' blending solution lightens the colours without watering down their tone, but Isopropowhateveritscalled does change the colours?

That's only hearsay though, I haven't actually tried it.

I use my alkie inks ALL the time - love 'em to pieces!

I've got some isopropanol alcohol bp from my local chemist, although I haven't tried it yet. I was told by another chemist (Lloyds) that isoproponal was going to be sold under licence and wouldn't be available and that they couldn't order any for me. So I went to a smaller chain (Selles) and they ordered it for me without any problems. It cost £4.34 for 500ml. So Cherida, you migt like to try the pharmacy at Tescos. My chemist had to order it in though as he didn't keep it in stock.

I was under the impression that the alcohol blending solution worked in reducing the intensitiy of the colours if you were using them on paper and didn't want such a strong colour, also it's used for cleaning the inks from your hands and any where else you might have got it. HTH:)

Hi girls. I have never used "the real" blending solution, so I have no comparison, but it does "soften" the colours and blends the metallic mixatives nicely. I have been happy with my results when using it, and I am always happy to save money by using an alternative.

Also, if you use Krylon pens, then they recommend using Isopropanol BP to clean the nibs.

Hi
Going back to the earlier post about the inks rubbing off. I made lots of domino brooches and when wearing one at the weekend some ink rubbed off on to the cream t-shirt I was wearing, although it did come out in the wash. Also I found that if I used a Krylon pen on the edges of the dominos it wore off over time if the brooch was being worn regularly. So I now use permanent markers which are cheaper and I assume will be more robust.

Anne

Flo
16-03-2006, 12:04 PM
with anything that's going to be handled a lot or worn, you'd really need a quick blast of spray sealant

or for something that will get a lot of wear, polyuretane varnish is supposed to be a really good protector

Hils
16-03-2006, 12:48 PM
Interesting info about how to clean Krylon nibs - will have to try that cos mine are blocked, which considering how much they cost is blomin' annoying...
I'd be inclined to coat anything regularly used/worn with DG/Glossy Accents...
Re the blending solution, this also helps the metallic mixatives to spread out a bit more, so that they don't look as "dotty" whne you've applied them, iyswim :)

Yes, I did some domino brooches ad the ink has all worn off round the edges, now have to try and remember which colours I used to touch it up and then varnish it. ::rolleyes:

Hiya,

I don't know if this has been mentioned in early posts, but I wondered what everyone used as a replacement felt to those of TH's in the pack of 50. I've bought 2 biggish squares in white and one in grey, (I know colour doesn't make a difference), but this type of felt, which I bought from my local heberdashery/craft outlet, seems to absorb the ink as soon as I apply it, whereas the TH felt just seems to keep it concentrated in the place it's applied. I have found I am topping the colours up on the felt frequently, and also, I am only able to get a few dabs onto the surface, as it just won't stretch. All felts are different, I would say the grey sheet that I've cut, is not so absorbent as the white. The white seems quite shiny and of a nylon type texture. Any ideas girls? ;)

Oh, forgot to say, that the colours are going on like blobs, despite not placing them close together on the felt, something that didn't occur when I used the TH type felts.

Thanks mucho. :)

Ah - Tim/Ranger do say that their felt is less absorbent - I had thought perhaps it was just marketing bumph cos the felt I use is fine, but I guess this proves them right!:)

Ranger felt is defo the best so far comparing it with the felt that I've used. I'm not prepared to pay £5 for a pack of those though, especially not when they're used frequently! So, I guess, I'll have to look out for some more felt.....:)

Beth - I use those little round felt pads they sell for sticking to the bottom of furniture to protect wooden floors - I got a huuuuge pack of them in Poundland (for a pound, obviously!)

they work just as well as the proper Ranger felt (I had the same probs as you did with other felt)

Gill (Wisher) - I've just read this now, so don't worry, as I've just realised now too, because of the email re this thread, that I'd forgotten to go to Poundland anyway. Unless I write it down, I've had it! No hope at all, is there? Nevermind, will go and have a look next week.

oohhh you lot are naughty ive just bought some now!!! When you apply the ink to the pads do you just do it in little blobs close to one another?

Hils

Hi Bex
When you apply the inks to the felt, just pop a few drops to the felt. Don't put them right next to each other else they might merge and go muddy - just leave a little bit of white space between them :) Have fun!
Been playing with my inks today. I've got 15 colours, so I've used one colour on each of 15 dominoes. Then I've stamped the name of the colour on the dom. Then - I keep them in a Provocraft lunchbox, so I've stamped a few images onto the white paint, and stuck the doms all over the box! And I'm adding four mini inked doms on the top, stamped to spell the word inks;)
So now I've got a storage tin and colour chart all in one :D

oh Hils, they are both gorgeous. The colours on the dominoes are so vivid - I think that maybe the 2 sets of inks I have are more muted, but these are lovely too. (Hmmm more shopping required!)

Just bought some alcohol inks, a dauber and some wotsit fluid. Now just have to get the guts up to put paint to photo paper ( as I saw soemone do in class) wish I had paid more notice of their technique.

Love the domino idea - do you use domino's on layouts too?

THANKS FOR ALL THE IDEAS on this post

Yes! I have yet to use some of the bigger ones on a LO - tho their time will come ;) but have used some mini ones :) You can pay a fortune for something similar - like plain dominoes with words on - but could make some of your own for much less :)
I've got a set of three dominoes hanging from a keyring on my AMM tote as well ;)
Don't know if its been said earlier cos I can't remember, but they look nice with a Krylon pen run round the sides after inking :)
Have fun - don't be scared, just play! :)

Bookmarking here so I can browse when I have time! Just got my first batch of inks and unsure what to do; used them at a class and somehow MY fingers got really messy whilst E1 else stayed clean.;)
Question; if I use them on a shiny finish key ring (for a handbag charm swap!) will I need to 'seal' the finish to preserve it?

You shouldn't need to - I inked a coaster a couple of weeks ago which has had almost daily use, and it still looks fine. Having said that, they do look absolutely gorgeous with a coat of Glossy Accents/DG over them - brings out the colours even more :) And it would of course help protect them over time :)

Will read this thread from the beginning when this weekend is over. May I play please?

You can also buy Isopropanol BP in a much bigger quantity than the Ranger one from your local chemist (try an independant, chains won't get it for you). I got a huge bottle for £4 from mine and it works exactly the same as the 'official' stuff.

Patty

And the Isopropanol BP is great for getting the inks off your chin, nose, arms, one table leg and a cup and saucer!!!!!! Who's a clumsy old perisher, then?

 Patty. Apparently nail polish removes unwanted ink from certain surfaces too.

Patty

But a cautionary word on this .... the nail polish remover also removed the colour from the jeans!!!

I just ordered some from my local chemist - 500ml for £5.09. (Isopropanol, not nail varnish remover!!). I'm really cross with myself - I went all the way into town this morning and forgot to go to a charity shop to buy a jigsaw to play with................

My amazing sons may be 5 months late with my birthday present but this time they are forgiven. In yesterday's post I received 3 sets of Tim's inks plus blening solution puls pads etc. AND they say 3 more sets of inks are on their way. I am beside myself with excitement but have NO idea where to start.
What would anyone suggest is the best place to begin???

Rachel what are you wanting to do? the Alchol inks work brilliantly on things like dominoes or metally stuff and the distressing inks are more of you paper work (if i am wrong i know someone will put me right:))

I started with some of the distressing inks so that i could use it on my paper projects making them look grungy then i got a couple of alchol inks later to play with on dominoes :) if you get the first DvD by tim holtz that will give plenty of ideas and some inspiration on where you would like to start :)

Definitely play with dominoes - you can do some fab things with them - try Googling domino art for loads of gorgeous examples.
Also go to the Ranger site - www.rangerink.com - for some more ideas on using them :)
Hope this helps - and Rachel, I've PM'd you :)

Glad you found the link useful Heather :) There are loads of projects and techniques on there too (there's a link to these near the bottom of the home page), and there are new ones added each month.
Re the DVD, I'd recommend starting with the first one cos it has lots of inky basics on it. The second one is great too and uses a melt pot quite a lot, but I'd def do them in order :)
