Well, I'll be one of the 1st then, seeing as I brought up the thread.

I received this from karen Keenan last May as part of an ATC altered box swap. The photo's don't do it justice, and it's the box I love using for my ATC's

This is the memory tin with journal I made MIL for Christmas. Tin holds decorated tags with questions from the grandchildren; idea is she will stick a tag on LH page and answer on the facing page.

I made this from a plastic CD case from Tesco £2.47, each month has a layout and a CD with a collage on to match. The CDs have all the digital photographs I took for each month.

Super ideas - unusual record of the year Jane, cool! What a great bag - what was the original tin? My DD1 would be really into that kind of bag!
Great thread, this - I don't often go searching the gallery, unless things appear on top.

Oh Jane can I PLEASE scraplift that idea of the monthly CD book?? I have ben looking for a good idea to store my Picture CD's and that so trocks my boat!

I love what you all did with the tins and boxes. I have to admit I can't really get my head around those. I just put a half ready lunchtin onto Ebay as I just wasn't inspired at all to finish it and I keep buying tins whenever I see them...but I am a but stuck with them
Keep 'em coming and hopefully they inspire me

Jane
04-01-2006, 08:29 AM
Of course anyone can scraplift, it was an article in the current ScrapBook Inspirations magazine so there is more to see and read if you need it. The boxes are a moulded plastic box, the white one is cheapest, the black is £5. I bought a pack of clear cd envelopes to make the little page protectors.

Helen, the round tins are from Provocraft (ScrapCanvas or Papermaze)

stardust
04-01-2006, 09:17 AM
Jane what kind of adhesive did you use for the tins? I saw the CD one in SI and thought it was a wonderful idea but thought it was beyond me. I may have a go now.

Jane
04-01-2006, 09:21 AM
I sanded, painted and then used magic scraps scrappy stuff glue. I sprayed the paint with enamel varnish to protect it before I stuck anything on.
The pockets for the cds ae just clear CD envelopes from tescos, they make fab little page protectors!

04-01-2006, 09:31 AM
Thanks Jane. I was wondering how the paint stuck but thought sanding it may make it go rusty. I never thought of varnishing it to seal it and prevent the rust. Definitely going to give it a go.

04-01-2006, 09:58 AM
But how did you put pictures on the actual cds. Sorry to be a bit thick

Caroline
04-01-2006, 10:10 AM
You can buy stickers CD shaped ready to print on Cath,or you could just print onto normal paper and cut it out and stick it on maybe

coreysmum
04-01-2006, 10:17 AM
If you printed them yourself where can i get a template? And what would i stick it with??

Thanks

KimmyS
04-01-2006, 10:24 AM
There are some templates available free from the internet, when I get home I will check for the links, I have them in my faves

If you just print them out on paper I would be careful - I tried is with different glues and if one drop of wet glue goes a bit over the edge it ruins the CD and with a glue stick I found that the paper starts to roll up at the ends after a while (coz it gets hot in the CD drive)

Maybe someone else has some good tips

Was that the skinny one with gum in or the wider one with mints in? Cos I've got both and am wondering how to get rid of the embossed bit on the skinny one (yes, I could cover it with paper but wouldn't that take on the shape of the raised embossing sooner or later?)
Glad to have read this tho - saved me having to find out the paint problem myself! ;)

Just read through the posts on this thread, and the work done by all of you girls, is really lovely indeed, very inspiring. :)

Do you mind me asking a few questions, pretty please?

1. I know the tins need to be sanded before adhering paint or glue etc to them, but can any paints or varnish etc be used?

2. Do you use the little filing index folder tabs for use inside the box, or do you make up your own?

3. Can anyone give some links for buying the tins, little tins, etc? I have recently learned of Kankan, and that's a good site too. :)

Thanks girls for your patience. Am wanting to have a go at altering dominoes too, dear me, sooooo many lovely things to try, and not enough time to do it all in. :)

Well Gals, you are truly inspiring! I too have caught the bug over the last few months. I started with a couple of Asda lunch tins, the first was for my friend who now uses it to hold ribbon.

The picture of the other tins are a mixture of new (scrapcanvas) an oxo tin and a truly old tin picked up from a flea market.

My favourite tin is the bottom left tin, shown inside and lid. It's got a bottle cap filled with watch parts as per Tim Holtz video(we're not worthy). I use it for my sewing bits. The idea came from stampington.

I just need to learn how to use colour now!

Just to let you know that I picked up a lovely hinged wooden box in Sainsbury's today-it is pine, unfinished wood and is 23cm x 40 cm x30 cm. It was about £5 in the sale. I am going to alter it to make a memory box for my wedding bits and bobs. They also had some dark wood (lamniate) letter racks for 99p (sort of long, thin lidless boxes) which would be good to alter as well

Lovely Lunch box Micayla. Everyone's efforts are truly brill.

Silly question now, but I wondered how the handles to these tins would be decorated, and noticed that lots of peeps adorn them with ribbons. I know this is not the rule, but is it the better and preferred way, or is there another way that would be suitable too?

Hello,
I know it's a bit cheeky being on here all of 5 minutes and then asking everyone a favour but I can't for the life of me open the 'how to' link at the beginning of this thread!
How do you alter a tin? I cleverly bought a Provo craft tin after being inspired by this thread and all the lovely designs but I've no idea where to begin! Someone mentioned sanding - why is this? How do I stick papers on the outside? Do I paint it? Do I varnish it? How do I stick the paper on the top with the handle in the way? So many questions - I'm so confused! (can you tell?!) Of course if there's a link to give that I can get open I'd be just as grateful for that! :)
Thanks in advance for any help!

I made a start on altering my lunch pail - decided not to paint it so didnt sand it.
I used double sided tape to attach various papers. Basic Grey on the bottom, HOTP paper pizzaz on the top and Memories Magenta Style Vintage Christmas for the strip along the middle.

I'm going to put receipes inside but now having scrappers block.
Thinking of the word receipes in cooper black font but not sure what else to put on it.

I've done my first tin. I decided to keep it fairly plain as it's for my brother. Not sure he'd appreciate ribbons, bows and frills!

It's a birthday card tin. I made some card dividers to go inside, each month has spaces to write the birthdays in.

DD helped me make some cards to put in the back, to start him off.

I love all the tins they are really inspiring! I am now looking around at all the storage boxes and tins that I have and thinking about how to alter them. When using paper to cover them has everybody found that using tape works the best or has anybody found a glue?

Hi, I used spray glue for my christmas lunch tin and found it was quite good, don't know if its acid free or not though (if that would worry you on a tin ) HTH :D

Here are some pics of my altered photo box. I made it in to an organiser for my sister going back to school.

Well here are a couple I have done the ink one is a cadburys chocolate box that at great distress to myself I had to empty first by eating the contents  I just used bits of papaer that were in my scrap bag they didn't all really match too well so I attacked them with an ink pad a bit messy but it serves its purpose and the second one isn't finished its to keep all those little things that I am forever losing like paper piercers, needles herma refills scissors and so on together but I cant decide how to finish it off I'm not sure ribbons are really whats needed

Hi

Just been to Tesco, they have little tins with playing cards in them for 97p. Have bought some to try and alter (just the right size for brads or buttons). Just one question, once you have put the primer on, can you use any paint to decotate.

Very lovely Didi, though the Tools tin is my fave, love the colours. :) If it's the tools tin you mean about whether or not to put ribbons on it, I think it looks perfect as it is, just my humble opinion though.

I popped in to a very large Tesco last night en route for home from a crop in Pitsea and found the lovely plastic CD box, sitting there begging to be altered. All I have to do now is get some inspiration as to what to do with it and perhaps brave everything and actually USE the wonderful Alcohol Inks that have been sitting on my desk for two weeks now!!!

I wanted to make a little brag book of sorts for my handbag. I have the usual problem of having loads of gooey stuff in there for the kids etc.

I cam up with this - a tin of playing cards (from Tesco). I altered the tin and made a little accordian book to go inside.

I tried out collage on the tin - my first attempt. I used normal papers for the lid, but because the tin was a tight fit I used a serviette which I stamped on. I was really pleased with the results.

Have been hanging around here for a while looking at all your marvelous lunch boxes and have final taken the plunge, two lunch boxes for altering arrived today. They are the provocraft white ones. I saw on Sharons ones above that the lid had been coloured a bluey colour. How did you do that? Would inks work or is it painted? Help I sound so thick.

Looking forward to getting started so any help would be appreciated, also how do you decorated the lid with the handles in the way?

Thanks for that will make the lid easier. What kind of paints did you use, I haven't got any at the moment so would have to buy some. Can anyone recommend any?

What do you recommend I stick my paper on with, Would Double sided tape be ok?

I used Making Memories acrylic paints, after giving it a quick rub down with some wire wool. I used diamond glaze to stick mine with but only cos I couldn't find my DS tape, luckily I only got one scrunched bit at the back from using a wet glue.

I painted then papered the lid, inside it's partially painted then lined with a coordinating cardstock. I've got no idea what I'll use the next one for lol, just going to see what papers I want to use and take it from there :).
