Do I have to use playing cards or can I just cut card to size or does it not matter as long you enjoy it?? Andrea

Where can i get pre cut cards or blank playing cards
I just use plain cardstock cut to 2.5" x 3.5"
I prefer to do this than use precut blanks as this way I can do a whole sheet of background, and then cut it up, choosing the nicest bits of background to use.
(does that make any sense?)

Has the trading thread moved yet? Lacey, there is one where you can do direct trades. If it isn't here yet, it will be in the old Inspiration forum.
hi Lacey
pop onto this thread:
http://www.ukscrappers.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=84407
announce that you have some ATCs to trade and refer people to your gallery
if anyone wants to trade (and they WILL because them there ATCs are bliddy gorgeous, girl! I'd trade myself but have run out of ATCs and need to make some more) they will let you know, and you can pick one of theirs and swap addresses via PM

so do you create your own back ground or just use patterned 12 x 12 - isnt paper a bit flimsey
I usually make my own (with brayered inks, or alcohol inks, or colour wash.... the possibilities are endless :)), or you could stick patterned paper to card.

If using playing cards how do you colour the background - ink or paint, Is it too smooth for it to stick?
cheers
not sure, as I haven't tried. I expect you would have to either glue paper on top, sand the shiny surface off, or paint gesso or primer on.

if i use bazzil card is that going to be thick enough ? and does everyone make textured / layered / 3d cards or does anyone do digital type things ?? Sorry if that seems a wierd question its just i came up with some ideas but they would be done with some printing from my inkjet and then some watercolour painting and other art faff on top but no other layers that would add substance so im wondering if bazzil would be thick enough ?
there are pretty much no rules as long as the finished card is 2.5" by 3.5" in size - and not toooooo lumpy (as most people store them in trading card wallet type things) - so yes, Bazill cardstock would be fine.
Your ideas sound great - looking forward to seeing the end product :)

ohhh we got our own thread :D ch4meleon.. i made my lotr atcs mainly digitally and (lo and behold) made a few of them 3d.. actually i quite like making "different looking" atcs and mine tend to be lumpy and 3d... the wonderful thing about atc is that anything goes.. no rules/regulations and they are so quick to do too due to their wonderful portable size...
just go wild and be astonished by the results.

I usually use a pice of bazzill as a base on mine - I dont have pokemon/gaming cards, its always been ok so far. Printing images to use on your atc is great, but if you are creating an atc in a digital format and then printing it out for a trade then you should say that its a printed digi creation, and also if involved in swaps check that the swap rules allow for digi atcs.
as long as you you stick to the 2 rules for atc's then just about anything goes, size must be 2.5" x 3.5" and you must sign, date, number the back and provide your location. Have fun!

Do people tend to decorate the back or is it just the date, location, signature and number on the back that matter? I have been inspired to make my first 5 cards having read this thread-they are in my gallery! I have tons of stamps from when i was a card maker and can see an outlet for their use now so I am very happy to have discovered this thread!

oooh - they're lovely!
(that was for chameleon, but yours a lovely too Chantal!)
(and no - no need for the back to be pretty, it just needs the right info on it)

If you want to stamp straight onto the cards stayzon is good or permanent markers.
You can sand the cards first to give them some grip :)
Some people dont like atcs unless they are 2 and a half by 3 and a half but I dont mind some of the best ones I have got are playing cards

I would love to have a go at these. Do you only make 1 of a particular design or do you make them is small "sets"?
You can make as many as you like sometimes I do sets of 9 as you can decorate A4 and get 9 from a sheet
But number them 1 of 9 2 of 9 etc
But 1 on their own is fine too :)
I put on the back of mine:
the number of the card (plus a 1/x, 2/x etc if it's in a set of similar cards)
my name, signature and date
Swindon, Wilts, UK
and my email addy usually
oh - and the 'title' / 'name' of the piece, if it has one (I don't always name them - depends how pretentious I'm feeling that day LOL)

I want to get into ATCs this year as well.
This could be a silly question...if you use an old playing card do you paint over it and if so what with and which side? Is there a "format" ?

hi kathie.. youll be addicted :D nope no format other than the size (just in case you hadnt read it in the other 30 posts :D :D its 2 1/2 x 3 1/2)..
i sometimes sand them down then slap on ordinary white wall paint or acrylic paint if i got them... but if im using paper i dont usually bother... im afraid.. its one of those things :D you will find what works best for you in time...

Where do you store your ATC's?
lalheg
04-01-2006, 11:17 AM
There are now specialist ATC binders that you can get, but they are markedly more expensive than using the trading card holders in a ring binder method. You can get the holders (usually A4 size for holding 9 cards) from many toy shops and other places that sell Pokemon type cards, plus there is a list of on line stockists in the ATC resources thread.
Other methods that people use include tins, hand made wallets, altered books and I am sure that there will be many more suggestions here - please?!

hmmm - not sure if that's strictly within the scope! (although I am tempted, because if I can get rid of him I'll have a HUGE craft room where his bedroom used to be!)
The SI article has been heavily edited and some of the cards printed upside down. I wish it showed more up to date cards, we did most of those over 18 months ago. Unless all the magazines find photographers and DTPs who know about the crafts we will end up with mistakes each time

Just a couple of quick questions:
1) When you sign the back of ATC's, what name do you sign? Your real name, or your username? i.e. would I sign my name as Angela or Pixie Girl?
2) Also, how do you go about trading them? When you've listed them in a forum post, do other people just Private Message you with the cards they want to trade for yours?
Many Thanks,

Ok... so I've been wating to have a go at atc's for ages but not known where to start! This forum is brilliant, there's so much helpful information here! Anyway, I've been having a play and made a set of four atc's. If I want to keep one for myself and trade the rest.. how do I number them? Is it 1 of 4, 2 of 4 etc., or 1 of 3, 2 of 3 ('cos I'm only trading 3?)
Also.. assuming anyone want to trade with me, how do I send them out? Do I need some of those see through covers.. or do I just pop them in an envie?
I just want to make sure I do things right!
Can you tell I'm new at this :P

Do what you want with them as long as they fit into the dimensions - I've got one with a hugely rounded corner (like those Mint credit cards) and you can make them so that they open out.....

Also sometimes i make a small envelope or bag to put the ATC in (there was a link to a template for the envelopes at the beginning of the January ATC Chat thread I think) ...and then put it in a regular envelope. Some people have snet hem out in the little brown money envelopes you can buy which are the right size for an ATC,......but they are so small I worry about them getting lost.

Have been reading lots of the chat on the ATC's and looking through the gallery at pictures there is some lovely stuff. Am very inspired togive it a go but not sure it something I could do. Is it totally open what you can do or is there some sort of style to them? ALthough I love some of the different styles I am very much into straight lines not very good with the 'messy' (mean that in a good way) look - love how they look in the gallery but just can't do it! Might have a go and upload the picture when I finish - at least I'll have tried!!
Pixie Girl
06-01-2006, 04:48 PM
Hi Lorna,
It is completely open what you do on ATC's, so long as they are 3.5" x 2.5". I have seen some with straight lines as well as "messy". It's up to you.
I'm also a newbie to ATC's, can't wait to start them! I'll probably go for straighter lines too - easier for me!
I've attached a few examples of straighter lines I've found in the gallery here, hope they give you some inspiration! Ask as many questions as you like, everyone here are really friendly! :D
Pixie Girl
06-01-2006, 04:49 PM
Plse note, those above are not my work, they're just some I found on the gallery here!
yup - just to confirm - there are zero rules as to what you put on the front of your ATCs - it can be anything you like - as long as it ends up measuring 2.5" x 3.5" and isn't too bulky
lalheg
06-01-2006, 05:17 PM

Instead of getting a stamp for the details on the back, you could do a 'label' on the computer. I have a label printer within the windows software....tell it I want a custom size label (probably have to convert the sizes to cms....) and print it out onto paper to glue to the back. As I often use brads on my ATCs this tidies up the back bu covering the 'legs' of the brad too. :)
willowthewysp
10-01-2006, 05:15 AM
Good idea! I like using brads aswell-along with anything else that tends to make the back of whatever im making look really messy!
Im still sat here with the cards, which are still blank!-I have too many ideas for them!
Sure i will eventually take the plunge and do one-soon!

Anyway, you can just picture the scene, me at the kitchen table-the entire contents of my stash excitedly tipped out onto the table and floor,my son, sleeping!I had my cards all printed out and ready to go.
It is then that i realise i have absolutley no idea as to what to put on them!!!Oh ive had ideas floating around my head for days now and i even put those ideas down in a special little note book, but could i transfer any of it to the card?NOt a chance!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I sat there for ages, staring at the card, staring at my stash desperate for inspiration, until i finally threw in the towel and went to bed-extremley annoyed with myself!
So today im looking for inspiration!Everything i look at is gonna be looked at in a new light!

Oh dear! You poor thing! Try having your computer next to your stash, have a flip through the ATC's already posted - you'll get lots of inspiration there! And as anything goes, you can try anything! Stickers are easy to start with, and if you've got rubber stamps, try them too!
Best of Luck with it!

Ok I am confussed, this morning I popped my first attempt at ATC's into the ATC Gallery. I do not want to trade these, these are samples for a display at a show, I just wanted to share them. I have been asked to move them to the trading thread, so what should go in the gallery? Sorry just a bit confussed. So I have moved them to my members gallery

ok, im up for a challenge! sounds fun - as long as its not too difficult a challenge! Could be what i need to spur my atc imagination.
I have narrowed down my ideas and have been getting all my stash out to see what iv got to work with and have a few things i could possibly work on...!

Why don't you do some and put them on the Pictures Thread to Trade and see what happens, I'd certainly have a look (I have a soft spot for horses and dogs!).

Courage? ok then, courage it is.
I think i know where to go with this one.....will get started on it straight away.
I did actually manage to make an atc today!!!!!Quite shocked myself - esp.when i realised how quickly an atc can be made.
If ive done it right(im useless at uploading-my pictures always seem to be too big!)then it should be in my gallery,possibly...!
will let you know when iv made this one themed on courage...

I'm totally new to ATCs and am just thinking of making them, but I thought you might like to know about something I've found which is brilliant for the backs.
Maya (scrapbookgraphics) has made some digital files for ATC backs, and also some gorgeous deco stamp files. You don't have to use them digitally, you can print them out for your ATCs. Can't post a link (non-sponsor) but I'm sure you can all find them with a Google! So nice that I can't keep it to myself, and I don't think you will know about them because they are brand new.
Hope you didn't mind an ATC-virgin butting in with that info!

Hi all
I fancy trying some of these but I don't know where to start. I know what size they have to be and what you put on the back (just read through this thread). What glue do I use to stick things on and seal them. Is pva ok or do I need something else?
Also can you use any paper or do you need to buy specific papers?
I am dying to try one but I am still unsure, will try and get one done tomorrow and upload to see if I am on the right lines

This might have already been asked but does everyone make just one set to trade or do you make two sets so you have one to keep for yourself.
It is up to you but it is hard to keep up if you make 2 of them all I dont have copies of all just a few I needed for books etc :)

Try asking on the kids forum as the parents would have to know just being careful as you dont want the kids to just give their address out :)

I have had a great time making ATCs and am looking forward to trading (once my new scanner has been set up!).
I bought some playing cards (I liked the back!) but they are not quite wide enough, just by about 4mm on either side (8mm) in total....will it matter?

How do you change your trader/swap rating?
How do you change your trader/swap rating?
You have to take part in swaps to get ratings.
They show how reliable you are at sending swaps back.
We used to be able to give them for atcs but admin stopped that.
You can still get them for the monthly trade :)

ok thanks for that. I thought you could get them for atc's, but as you have said you can't anymore.
I am hoping to take part in something like the monthly trade asap, but as from 20th feb, will not know where we are living, so maybe its best to wait until we have sorted ourselves out before committing myself to something which i wont be able to keep up with (plus i think that making atc's and suchlike will be the last thing on my mind!

I am sure I will find a way to join in but I have found a big problem, I don't have a computer of my own and therefore no scanner ect. Its going to be a bit dificuly to download pic of any ATC's I make.
I think I will have to make a bunch and then see if I can chat my brother into downloading them for me.
In the mean time I guess I need to make more money and buy myself a computer.
Am I the only scrapbooker (wanabe ACT maker) who does not have a computer !
Been looking through some of the posted ACTs.... wow .....
Can you take pics with a digi camera :)

Hi LME couldn't find my way back to the site. Yes I have a camra on my phone but I don't know if I could up load it at the library. I also have a BASIC digi camra, it takes 15 shots.... thats it. I will have to look and see if it has a connection cable that I can take to the library but I don't know if I need to put a program in the computer first. AHH!
I know, I just need to buy a computer.
My dd has a wire she got from the shop she bought her phone to transfer her pctures I think you can get free software to adjust the size of your pics.
I got mine with my camera but everyone on here is so helpful I bet if you asked for help on a thread someone could tell you where to get the free software

Hello...really fancy giving ATC's a go. Still a little bit nervous as I'm not really sure how you base your theme?
Does everyone have their own style or can you make them for any theme?
OMG, I sound so dumb don't I
mum2a16yrold
08-03-2006, 10:09 AM
Anna, you make them on whatever theme you like and then if people want to trade them they will ask you or if you see one you like of someone else's you ask them if they would like to trade, if the ones you have made are not their cup of tea, they may choose to wait until you have made some more, but it doesn't mean yours are no good, just that they are not their 'thing'. Give it a go, start with something you really like and do maybe 2 or 3 similar cards. Also have a look through the picture only threads you will see they are all very different. Hope this helps, although I am sure there are others on here who have been doing it far longer than me, that can give better advice. :)

If you want to trade them Gaye, put them in the pictures only thread for March and then go into the chat thread and tell people you have put some in there for trade, if you can put a link great, if not no worries. If you don't want to trade them just put them in the ATC gallery. :)

I have been asked by a friend to make and swap an ATC card with her , I have never done this before and just wondered do you decorate both sides ? Thanks Val x
Hi Val
You only decorate one side, on the back you would usually write your name, email address, number of card in the series eg 1 of 1 or 1 of 3 etc and the name of the card/series, eg architecture

Hi,
Have been doing ATC's for quite some time now and seen several discussions about using playing cards as a base, most playing cards are not the right size(I know they are almost the same size, and call me a nit picker but almost isn't the same)Why buy ready made when all you have to do is cut a piece of card 3 1\2 x2 1\2 ins. Some people like to round the corners (I don't) but that is a personal choice. An ATC is meant to be 3 1\2 x2 1\2.Sorry to be so pedantic but this is just one of my (many) little foibles!!!!!!!!

Fine!
But I am am (reletively) new to ATCs and bought some lovely cards because the back and front were both beautiful...I know I can cut a piece of card, I know I can glue the playing card onto something...I was jsut disappointed not to use soemthing that seemed so ideal
I think the poker ones are the right side :)
My friend got me 2 packs that are the right size:)
I have been lucky I have recieved some beautiful ones that are a bit small I have not yet but I could mount them on the right size but I could not part with them now:wub:
Hi, I have a question about ATC etiquette. have some lovely ATC from a 10 for 10 swap and have started trading. There are some I have received from others that I would love to use in a minibook. Would that be considered ok or do I need to aks the person's permission. personally I would be delighted if somebody wated to do that or include on a LO or indeed anything else but di wonder if that was a misuse?

someone told me you cant use the spade suit if you use playing cards to use as a base as its bad luck for the person getting it,is this a common knowlege thing or am i able to use them?
also are digital atc's counted as an atc, made one from a photo id taken and i dont think the reciever classed it as a 'true atc'and didnt seen too impressed, again is this the feeling reguarded by most swappers?
hope someone can answer,

Hi there,
I've only been here for a couple of days, but I wonder if anyone can tell me if it is ok to swap limited edition prints in the blind ATC swaps? I hand paint cards, have sold rather a lot, and have even sold prints, so it isn't really possible for me to blind swap many of the originals. For that matter it isn't always easy to find fair hand painted one on one trades either! But I love all ATCs, so would rather swap than sell if possible.
I only print small *numbered* editions, and keep strict records of all cards printed so you can be sure I won't just keep churning them out, LOL.
Anyhow, if folks can advise if this kind of thing is allowed I would be grateful.
Hi I think it depends on who you swap with:wub:
Some people do limited editions of digital too.
I would gladly swap:)

I have a quick question.
As a rule, are ATC's acid free? I know I haven't seen many with photos but what do most of you do?
I dont usually as they are stored in individual plastic wallets but if anyone requested me to I would:)

Hi Ladies (and Gents.... do we have any Gents....hmmm... I'm not sure I've seen any about on here! LOL).
I'm thinking of venturing out into the world of ATCs, because, you know with 4 scrapbooks, card making for the rest of the year, some mini-books and some sewing projects on the go I really don't have enough to do (yeh, right!!). Anyway, I digress....
I have a quick question though, I have some playing cards (they are poker ones -which I may or may not have stolen from the Texas Hold'em poker kit that DH got for Christmas... Can I plead the 5th on that one?? ;) ) but when I measured them they seem just slightly shy of 3.5 inches in the height.... is it okay to use these... or is that 1/16th of an inch important??? (I assume it's a 16th... I'm somewhere inbetween being a metric girl and dealing with imperial measurements... the trials of being born in the 70s!! )
Any advice appreciated.... there is a question in there if you look hard enough... honest there is......my God I can waffle for England. Shut up woman!!!
love
I have used poker cards I think it is the smaller playing cards that are too thin:)
I tend to use card now as I like to scrunch it up to get texture:)

WHERE DO I START? (and yes I meant to shout ).
Been reading through this thread and apart from they have to be 2.5 x 3.5 inches I still haven't got a clue what to do!! I love ATCs, I've been RAKed a couple and think they a gorgeous and would love to have ago. But I haven't got a clue what to do, I suppose I'm a bit worried mine will be a bit naff and wouldn't want to show them so what's the point of doing them.
Any whoo, I've bought a pack of card protectors from eBay (a 100 pack) to make me take the plunge, or they will be a big fat waste of money (esp. when I'm on a stash diet). I just don't have a clue what I'm doing!
Do I just sit with my correctly sized piece of card and throw a few things at it till it looks ok?

I could have written that myself Helen - which is exactly the reason I haven't started any yet!! I have some ideas but I keep thinking that they're going to be a bit pants!!
I love your first one.... I think you might have inspired me to just go for it!!

It is lovely:)
It is hard to say how to go about making them as everyone has a different approach:)
I love stamping so I tend to stamp mine and collage but I have recieved lovely ones made by others who like to scrapbook theirs.
The only thing I can say from experience is if they make you smile when you look at them you have done a good job.:)

Why not join the 3 for 3 this month (Feb's is up now) and see how you go. I'm sure you will learn lots of tecniques from others (I'm still a bit of a newbie atc'er);) or look in the pictures only trading thread for January for inspiration.
Good luck

Marie & LME, Thanks!
Gail, I might just do that. I take it you do 3 ATCs and swap with 3 others?
Thanks for joining I have added the info to the first post ie you send 3 to the person below you and rec 3 from the person above:)
The atcs can be similar but different as they go to the same person:)
Just ask if you need any help.

Sorr I didn't get back to you sooner, but my internet connection keeps dropping out  I've just begun to make ATCs and I've been looking for a swap or challenge to get involved with, but I can't seem to find one! Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but the threads I go to don't seem to have any recent posts. Where should I go please?

Why don't you join in on the March 3 for 3 swap here (http://www.ukscrappers.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=154320) it is a good way to start :)

Some threads drop down to the bottom and are bumped up when someone posts :)
If you read a thread then post on it all the people who are subscribed to the thread get a meassge.
Just ask if you need any help :)

Sorry if this has been asked before, but with 16 pages my eyes are going googly!
When you make a set of ATCs and trade them, can you make another set the same? Or can that design only be used once?
Hope that makes sense!

Ooo I dunno! I guess it is up to you really I think. Not sure tho! In a big swap usually you would make a load the same so I just did 26 zebras but I'm not sure what the correct etiquette is for sets!! I guess like anything crafty they vary each time a bit anyway.

Another daft question - can you tell I've been away a while
Do we Trader Rate ATC trades?
DOH - forget that - just looked at Tashas and see we do! Off to rate you now Tasha!

I dont think it would matter you could always make them 1a 1b etc so you would know you had done 2 sets the same :)

What is the difference between a series of cards and an edition?
I know that one is where all the cards are identical and the other is where the cards are similar but different, but just *how* identical should the identical ones be?
If, for example, I want to include a torn piece of a real map as a background, do I have to use the exact same piece of map (ie showing the exact same towns and road etc) or will the fact that its a mao in the same colours and style be ok?
And if I'm putting embellishments on, do they have to be in the exact same place?
Sorry if this does not make much sense, I'd be interested to see any examples of sets of cards which are "editions" and "series" so I can see what other people have done!
I dont know if I am right but would a series be similar done on a theme.
Some people do a limited edition so would not plan to repeat them?
In books a first edition can be reprinted so not sure if you made a special one and repeated it you might called it edition 2:unsure:
Some people do digital atcs so maybe it referes to them?

They are on bits of card 2.5"x3.5" and pretty much anything goes! Have a look in my PB for some examples
