Altered address book? comments please!

Beware, long rambly thread :)

I have an idea.......it's in its infancy, so I haven't ironed out all the details yet.....but just wanted to see if you all think it could work.

In a sale at work the other day I picked up a really lovely 6x4 photo album - the sort with one photo per page, so almost like a little 6x4 scrapbook with page protectors, iykwim

Anyway - I was going to use it for a CJ, but then I thought that actually, as there's a sizeable black gap in between the two opposite pages when you open it flat out, you couldn't really do a coherent double page spread in it - and also one of the best things about CJs are their interactivity / accessibility - opening little flaps and pockets etc etc which would be awkward if they were stuck behind page protectors.

So - back to the drawing board....I was driving back into work this lunchtime and thinking about what to do with the cute photo album (any wag who suggests "put photos in it" can go to the back of the class :)) and also thinking I hope to get some time tonight to get some ATCs made....somehow the 2 ideas merged, and an idea started to form....

Wouldn't it be fab, I thought, if in each 6x4 pocket I had a lovely layout / piece of artwork made by one of my wonderful UKS buddies - I could put their contact details on the back of each one (hence 'altered address book') and then it would be useful and gorgeous, and would make me smile every time I picked it up as I'd know that my friends had cared enough to take time out of their busy lives to make something beautiful just for me :)

So ..... how would this work, I wondered....and how would it be similar or different to a CJ, to ATCs, to a normal swap?

I envisage it working like so:

1) you think of someone who you would like to make a page in your altered address book - this should be someone who you have a real connection/relationship with (online or IRL) - ie you have chatted to them 1 to 1 - someone you'd consider to be a friend
2) you PM them and ask if they want to do it (stressing that 'no I'm too busy' is a perfectly acceptable response)
3) assuming they say yes, you send them a SAE big enough for them to send back their completed piece of work - this should be 6"x4" in size (or slightly smaller if 'lumpy' as it has to fit in the page protector), but other than that it can be anything they want it to be, and they can complete it whenever they like, no time limits, no pressure

Why is this not a CJ?

- there's no theme
- there's no requirement to reciprocate - if I ask my pal for a card to go in my address book, I don't automatically have to do one for her too - although obviously if she asks me to I will!
- there is no timetable - this is the liberating part - if I send you an SAE I don't mind if you return your card tomorrow or in a year's time!
- there is no fixed posting rota

Why are these little artworks not ATCs?

- they are the wrong size for a start! (6"x4" instead of 3.5"x2.5")
- you're not trading 1 on 1 (see the 'no requirement to reciprocate' bit above)
BUT there are similarities to ATCs in as much as there are no rules - you can choose any theme, any style, any media - as long as the finished product is the right size and flattish, it counts!

Is this scrapbooking?

not really - for a start, there's no requirement to include photos on your 'card' - but of course you can if you want to (and in fact a little pic of the person who made it on the back, along with their contact details, would be a nice touch)

Is this a swap?

I don't think so - I don't think it would be formal enough to be a swap, neither should it need much moderating as it would be so flexible, with no timetable or themes

Would my friends out there (YOU know who you are!) be prepared to make a card for me to make my crazy idea into a reality?

People could still swap but leave the address bit blank for the recipient to fill in an address they use a lot.

straight swaps would definitely be the best way to go if both parties were doing an address book of their own - but I ask someone to do one for me and they are not doing their own then I'd happily send an SAE as I wouldn't want to leave them out of pocket if they weren't getting anything in return...

as for leaving the addy bit blank - I'd rather the front was created by the person on the back - and I can't imagine anyone who might ask for my addy whose I wouldn't want in return, iykwim

When our team first got together we did tags for each other and when mine all came back I put them inot a 6x4 album for safe keeping. Each tag has been individually decorated and has the address of each team member and something about them.

Anyone who wants to make a book should just PM their "chosen few" (ie the people they want pages from) directly

If the other person is doing a book aswell, all well and good, you can make it a straight swap

If the other person isn't doing a book of their own, but is still happy to make you a page, then out of courtesy you should send them an SAE to send your page back when they have finished it

no need for any central co-ordination, at least that was the plan!

just made my first AAB entry :)

this one started as a mistake - tried to print a pic of my little boy off my mobile phone on one of those Photo Me kiosk thingies that cost 20p a print - I wanted a single 6x4 print but got 4 wallet sized ones instead - I must have pressed the wrong button.

well, I thought it might be fun to play with it - and of course, it was already 6" x 4" :)

So I coloured the sky, house and Connor's t-shirt different colours in each of the 4 pics with markers for a pop art type effect, and then printed a transparency overlay to spell out BOY (as he is pulling a proper boy face!) and then popped a few embellies on the top.

I like working in this size - it's fun!

I have had my first address card! (thanks Tracy aka winterbaby), sent one in return too.

Sarah - popped into "your shop" ysterday and found a nifty frosted plastic folder that has 14 clear 6 x 4 sleeves in it and then it sits in a little case - half price at 99p!! Absolute bargain. Am using it to keep my cards in until I find the "right" album to alter for a permanent addy book.

Tracy if you go the the 'go advanced' button at the bottom of the quick reply box and there is an option for manage attachments. If you click on browse and find the pic on your PC or wherever if is stored then click upload, close the window and submit reply. It should work.

oooh please don't be scared peeps - the cards don't have to be 'altered' at all - mini scrapbook pages are completely acceptable! (in fact I'm sure I said that in the original post).

In fact, the only reason I called it an 'altered address book' is because the end result will be a little different from a 'normal' address book. Strictly of couse I should have called it an 'altered photo album'

I got a LOVELY card from Sally (InspireSpirit) today at a crop - it's gorgeous - I'll scan it on soon to show you all what a clever girly she is!

Cos in the olden days the papers that were around the teabags were used for this technique - i read that somewhere recently

Yes it's like oragami, the name comes form the Netherlands when tea came in pretty little paper envelopes and they made them into rosettes hence the name. I done some decoupage one too, so If any would like one just let me know.

Actually that photo is pretty old i was 19 (i think i can't even remember! :rolleyes: ) in that photo i'm now 21 and have changed a little!
