Hi Everyone, I have been trying to research my family tree. My mother seems to have vanished off the face of the earth in the late 50's as there is no record of her in the UK after that and I have been told that probably means that she emigrated. Can anyone suggest how to proceed. Thanks. Rose

Any ideas on where she emigrated to? Not sure but think travelling by boat was still the "way to go" back then (DH's gran went to America for the 2nd time by boat in the 50's). I must add that I have been unable to find her in the Ellis Island records even though I know which boat she went on and where she arrived!

Still, wouldn't get that joyful feeling when you find some long searched for piece of info. if we found it first time!!

Sorry not to be of more help.

Jules

Any idea what age she might have been then?

The biggest difficulty I can forsee is if she emigrated and married at the same time, gonna even harder to find then with no info.

I've searched for over 2 years for my DH's great grandfather in America, can find everyone else but not him - I'm beginning to think his GGmother made him up!

Do you have documentation of her whereabouts prior to her "disappearing"?

Jules

Hi there, No I know absolutely nothing. Age wise I should imagine early to mid twenties. (I was born in 1955) If I was going to hazard a guess as to where she went I would say Oz because apparently it was mentioned once. But it could be a complete red herring. Rose

Mmm, its a toughie - methinks your best bet would be to try going down the OZ route and hope you can come up with something, at least if you find nothing you can temporarily lay that to one side - but don't ever rule it out!

My DH grandfather is listed twice in the 1920's census at the start of January he was at home (I had found that entry) and by the end of January he is in a reform school! It was pure luck that I had posted on a genealogy board and someone else found the entry! There had been mention of him being in trouble but I assumed it was when he was older not 15 years old so your Oz connection might not be such a red herring after all.

I have had lots of information sent to me after posting on various boards. Might be worth a try searching for Ozzy related ones and post any questions there - won't do any harm. Perhaps see if you can find any ships passenger lists to search - you may be lucky to turn something up.
