Not sure why there are no threads in here.....
Can anyone tell me some good idea books for making art journals? I have one, Gwen Diehn's 'The Decorated Page', which is good, but I'm interested in looking at some others.
Thanks.

Oooh I have two fabby books ...
Oooopsss ... actually, just went to get them for the titles, and I seem to have four!
In order of preference (though I love them all!)
Journal Revolution by Linda Woods and Karen Dinino
Visual Chronicles by the same two
alphabetica - an a-z creativity guide for collage and book artists by Lynne Perrella
and
The Complete Guide to altered imagery by Karen Michel
I have to admit that I've looked through the books more than I've actually done any art journalling, but the first two in particular are very inspiring!

This is where my interest in papercrafting lies.
I found a YouTube tutorial on making a hardcover book this morning that looks fairly easy and would be perfect for art journalling.
Huh, I can't post the link, but the code is joi3_WsUxE0
I really want to try this :)

Thanks so much for the info on the books and on YouTube. I ordered 'Visual Chronicles' and '1000 Artist Journal Pages' (by Dawn DeVries Sokol) from *the big online bookshop* this morning!

The Decorated Page has been in my saved basket for a while, but I'm also looking at Artists' Journal and Sketchbooks.
I'd love to do a mixed media art course. Might have to see if anywhere nearby holds them.

I've just had session 3 of 4 of an Art Journal Workshop and am really loving it, but it's a whole new world for me... I want to see as many different kinds of Art Journals as possible. I tend to be kind of stick-in-the-mud <_< with my scrapping, so I'm trying to 'break out' into something new.
Once I figure out what I'm doing, the next step is to figure out the best journals to use. I have kept a daily journal for the past 8 or 9 years -- it's a hoot to go back and re-read them! -- but in nice, lined, neat journals. Now I'm wanting to find a way to jazz up these journals by using some of the Art Journal techniques. It's hard though as I find the writing process and art process don't always coincide IYKWIM. I tend to write in bed, just before I fall asleep, so how do I splash around paint, glue, etc.? I think that even my long-suffering hubby would draw the line at that.
What do you all see as the purpose or function of an Art Journal? Is it to play visually with a theme (i.e. gardens, travel, etc.) or is it to do something chronological, like a diary/daily journal?
HelenB
17-06-2009, 06:59 PM
I'm planning on doing one on a theme.
The ideas I have are probably far too ambitious considering it's my first, but it's a gift and so worth the effort :)

Jane, why not get some loose card, art them up, leaving space for journalling, bind together, then write in it at night like you already do. It doesn't matter if the images/art 'match' your journaling-treat the arty page as a blank piece for journalling on.

Oh thanks for starting this thread.
I have pondered for a while about buying a book re techniques etc but I've always been chicken and decided my money could be better spent on stash.
I have just started an art journal and I am loving it :) There are tons of inspirational blogs on the net and I have used these to kick start me rather than buy a book.
I did want a copy of Art Journaling by Somerset Studio but couldn't find a copy anywhere then i read that I could buy an electronic copy of if, which I did and its been a great inspiration. Would much prefer a paper copy but elec is better than nothing.
I beleive the next copy is due out some time in the summer so will eagerly be on the look out for it.
Learning from the masters, What I have done re decorating the page is I have 'prepped' about a dozen or so pages (gessoed, painted, inked etc) so that they are just ready to add patterns, doodles, writing as and when I want to. Then I have a small roll up kit with various pens, markers etc and a small section with scissors, glue stick, sponges, washing tablet bag etc (for textures) and ready cut images ready to go.
I have had a major pipe burst underfloor (from back in March of this year) and unfortunately most my scrapping gear had to be put away whilst we went through the drying process etc. We now have the decorators in and once they are finished the laminate floor will need to be put down. Obviously during this slow process and whilst by stash is in hibernation I still needed me time so I decided to start an Art Journal. My supplies are portable (1 journal and 1 roll up bag) so I still get my crafting fix.
I love working in my journal and I'm only sorry that I didn't do somthing similar before now.
Other blogs that I have found inspiration from

Wow, wow, wow, Pam! I just looked at your blog and your Arty Bits album on Flickr and was blown away! That's as good as buying an idea book. I hope you don't mind but I bookmarked it to go back and look at it again. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks also for the idea of cards. I think I may do it but slightly differently...I'm going to get a supply of 4x6 white cards and do some 'arty bits' (love that term) with stamping, ephemera, whatever, occasionally, then stick them in amongst my journaling. It'll be fun when I go back two years from now to re-read it and find the cards.

No, actually thank YOU Chris and everyone else for all your tips, websites, ideas, etc. I think I need a lie-down now..... I've just looked at all these links and am feeling quite queasy. It's a bit like being hungry and suddenly presented with a feast -- I had no idea all this world existed until a few days ago and now I'm on sensory overload!!! I can't wait to get back into my new paints and mediums and other stuff.
One tip from the Art Journal workshop: we cut images from magazines, then stuck plain, clear packing tape on top of them, cut around the image, rolled over it a few times to make sure it was all adhered to the packing tape, then dropped them in a cup of water for about a minute. We took them out of the water (at this point they'll look like wet stickers), then carefully scraped the paper off the back of the image. The image itself stays adhered to the packing tape. Using gel medium we stuck it on the page, then covered it with an additional layer of gel medium. When it's dry you can then paint over it (use something translucent so you can still see it) or just leave it. Basically the packing tape makes a sort of transfer but is cheaper than buying transfer medium. Hope you didn't all already know about that and think I'm an idiot. ^_^

A couple of blogs that might have some ideas for when you have journallers block!
Emily Falconbridge (http://embers.typepad.com/e/) - is running a '52Q' thing this year where she sets a question every week. You can answer this however you like - in a journal, on cards, I'm doing mine on mini envelopes (though not keeping up!). She did a similar thing last year where she just gave a word each week - there are links on her blog.
Rachel Wehtzel (http://www.minetothine.com/) also has an ongoing 'journalling journey' going on - a word every two weeks here (http://oneyearartjournal.blogspot.com/). If you look in her word cloud thing on the right side of her blog there are links to her art journalling stuff.
I love things like this as for me, sometimes the hardest part is getting started. I just look at a blank page and think 'aaarrrrgggghhhh' whereas if I have a little prompt to start me off, it gets me thinking about something in particular and so sets the creative juices flowing. But of course other times I can just do something about whatever is in my head at the moment .... ok I think I'm waffling now
The Art is Found (http://theartisfound.blogspot.com/) - this is a kind of challenge blog with scrapping and art journally stuff. Some lovely stuff.
creativityUNLEASHED by traci bautista (http://kollaj.typepad.com/kollaj/) - some amazing artwork here
Karen Michel (http://alteredimagery.blogspot.com/) the author of one of those books I mentioned.
Visual Chronicles (http://visualchronicles.typepad.com/) - this is the blog of Linda Woods and Karen Dinino - the authors of Journal Revolution.

Just found this one(http://ruby-rox.blogspot.com (http://ruby-rox.blogspot.com/)/)... she's got some amazing video tutorials here and on You Tube. She's 'RubyClaire Art' on YouTube and I think she's just turned 15 years old!!!
If you go to You Tube and just search on 'Art Journals' you'll find tons and tons. You could spend HOURS (voice of experience here). What I'd like to know is how they make these videos and find this fantastic music for it! The music seems to always fit just perfectly.

I've been browsing Flickr this morning and found some gorgeous art. Not just journals but ATCs, matchboxes, even CDs (I love this one). I've just been blogging about what I've found and want to try!
I might have a go at bookmarks today. I have card and paper in (don't have a 'stash' yet *sighs*) but I've no idea where my hole punch was wandered off to......
Loving all of these links, I need a week to look at them all! Thanks for all of the input

YAY - what a busy thread - Brilliant :D
Jane - love that tip - will be trying this one soon- I have a thick role of clear packing tape (usually reserved for Christmas) - would love to try it but daren't start uprooting boxes now looking for it LOL
Lucky you living close enough to Janes new studio to be able to take this class - the nearest to me would be AFTH but even still its 2 hours there and another 2 hours back. Will just have to do with internet for now.
I also couldn't see the objective behind art Journaling before Jane, but it's surprising onnce you give it a go how your view changes.
Helen - I havent anything major for my stash - I bought cheep childrens water colours from asda - a small 12 pack of acrylicks from quality save (2.50) and some pastels from Tesco (4.00) & my journal from Paperchase which was about 6.50 (<<dearest thing).
I did try making my own pages using the method by Donna downey - prit sticking several sheets ofnews paper together but not really viable as the pritt stick only did about 20 sheets which gave me about 5 pages.
Suzie cheers for the new blogs - always love looking at other inspiration so cant have enough bloggies :D
Pam - again thanks for the link for the free Journaling class - I deffinately will be trying this one.
Looks like we're going to have a busy little thread - thanks again for starting Jane :)

Hi Jane ,
Thanks for starting this thread. I have started to journal on one of the pages that I collaged on Tuesday. It is the one with the Poppy in a vase.
I have written the Flanders Field poem on it. I just wish my hand writing was a lot neater Grrrrrrr.
I have ordered 2 books from the jungle website, I am hoping to get them tomorrow, as I had them delivered to work. One is Journal revolution and the other one is collage discovery workshop, I just hope they are OK.
Keep those links coming girls.
Another tip, you can transfer images using Inkjet photos as well as lazer using gel medium..

Barbara
If you want texture on your pages, mix some clean sand into some gel medium then when dry you can paint over it.

Thanks for all the great links everybody - this is a fabulous inspirational thread for anyone interested in art journalling. I'm slowly ploughing through all the links and absorbing lots of interesting things for future use. Was wondering when watching some of the vids .... where do you go, or what particular things do you seek out as 'findings' for your work. I find items from Tim Holtz and the like very expensive for what they are and I was wondering if anyone has found anything interesting and different to use from places like car boots or jumble or indeed everyday stuff in the home?
I don't add any found objects to my journals, I tend to keep them flat and save the lumpy bits for altered books.
I like to dig around in junk shops and charity shops for old pieces of costume jewellery to pull apart. Claires accessories is quite good for cheap stuff too

I would have thought the UKS search engine was smarter than that and could have suggested 'Art Journalling' (though I'd never have spelled/spelt it with two letter Ls (my American spelling again).

 I've just written about this in the social group but I'll repeat myself
At first I thought what is the point with the writing thing ... but I found it really liberating when it got to the 'I forgot to tell you' prompt. It was great to write down all these things that I would never tell anyone and then cover them up so no-one could see ... only I know what is lurking beneath :D I'll definitely do it again!

I suppose the idea is that if you know you're going to cover it up, you'd be more likely to write down your inner most thoughts. However, as I writer the thought of 'editing out' my words just doesn't sit right with me.
Suzie, the only problem is that I have an awful memory and I'd forget what I wrote!

HI there,
I have completed a page in my AJ journal called fabric of life. ( Jane and Jane, its the one from Tuesday night)
I have journaled on it a verse/poem about my childhood. I guess if anybody were to read they would think Huh! why on earth have they put that on there, but to me it has my thoughts on that page.
I am really enjoying this AJ, I feel free and creative within my self as there are no boundaries to comply with.
My Books have arrived and boy I cannot wait to try some of the techniques!
Barbara.
Barbara, I managed to pick up some of the pitt pens today but it's frustrating as I can't get down to the studio to try them out over gel medium and acrylic paint. That write it all pen I had the other day was rubbish.

Bwaaaahhhaaaa.... I'm jealous! Mine haven't come yet!!!!
As for pens, I wrote on one of my pages today, then put the gel medium over it and no smears. I tested it on my Zig pen (says 'waterproof') and also some Staedtler pens I have. None smeared and in fact after the gel medium the writing looks even crisper and clearer .
Jane D... hope that helps with the pen puzzle.
Have you tried writing over the gel medium? When I try to write on the paint the ink dries up on most of mine. I wonder if I should let it dry properly first?

Yes, I did it....my Zig pen writes over the gel medium just fine. Haven't tried the others but I suspect they will, too. I wonder if you maybe used a different gel medium....or maybe the acrylic paint wasn't completely dry?

Just to update everyone on my original post on this thread: my books arrived today. I've just had a quick glance, but I'm a little disappointed in 'Visual Chronicles: the No-Fear Guide....' as it doesn't have a lot of interesting examples but neither is it a how-to book. It appears to be more of a pep-talk about why you ought to give it a go. Still, I need to actually sit down and read it to be fair.
The second book, '1000 Art Journal Pages' is exactly that. Just photos of a thousand art journal pages. It's published by the same folks that did '1000 ATCs' and both of these have some pretty amazing examples. There's no discussion of HOW they did it, however. I'm not sure that's really needed most of the time.... pretty easy to look at a page and figure it out, I think. It's only useful for inspiration but for that purpose it's great!
I'd like to have a technique book that has lots of examples. For example, did the artists use watercolours or pastels or what? How did they make the page shiny? How big was the page? What kind of paper did they use? Some anecdotal info (favourite pages, favourite tools/paints/etc., how they got started, what they use for inspiration, how long they've done it, and so on) would be really helpful and interesting, too.
Does such a book exist?????????

I love the book, by Kelly Rae Roberts, full of techniques and ideas. I also own Collage work shop by Claudine Helmuth, loads of techniques in that one as well.
I have just been playing on one of my pages, and I used the Packing tape transfer method, but with a difference. I used that clear sticky back plastic, as the image I wanted was a lot wider than my tape. Just waiting for it to dry to see if it has been successful.

I have the Somerset Art Journalling-I love it-but tbh wouldn't pay for a downloadable version-but that's because I don't like reading on line-and printing would be expensive, and not bound.
and tape transfers can look good if you overlap the packing tape for a large image-you do get lines-but i like that look.

True Colors by Stampington
Paper Transformed by Julie Andrus
Collage Unleashed by Traci Bautista
and I'm also looking for some books of quotations called 'Quote Unquote' by Autumn Leaves. So if anyone has any of the above they'd like to clear out, please let me know!!! :P
Last night was our last session, but Jane showed us some cool journaling techniques. Can't wait to play some more with the whole thing. I've put some photos of my first Art Journal page and of our workshop on my blog.

I managed to get the Art journalling magazine/book from a UK supplier I often use. It is fab but still packed away somewhere following our house move.
Love True colours as well but my copy is a tad worn and Kelly Rae Roberts who is a sweetie to deal with.
Will pop back later and check out the other links and have a play.

Thanks for confirming the price - I googled art journaling mag and came across the same one a few days back. I got my hopes up when I saw the word 'Somerset' in the title I thought it was based in the UK and then read it's a US journal. I was thinking I probably wouldn't be able to justify getting one shipped across the pond (not sure how much postage would be) but the on-line version sounds worth a go :). Would really like to know what you think of the paper version when/if you decide to go ahead and have one sent across. I'm really surprised that we don't have anything similar in the UK yet or even Europe. I wonder if we'll ever have one on this side of the pond?

Hi. I downloaded it yesterday ~ however it is 200MB in a zipped file. I had several tries at getting to the right place but that doesn't seem to be your problem as I didn't get to where to pay the money at first.
Have you had an email from them? Check your spam or junk box in case your antivirus thinks it's a phishing email. There should be a link from the email to the download. Hope you get it sorted.
I don't know where in the States Stampington offices are but they will be anything between 5 and 8 hours time behind us timewise

Hi Craftdee
I have pre ordered the October mag (2nd issue) , but from a supplier over here - not coming from the states. So hopefully not too much extra in P & P.
Looking at the online version it seems to have the same qualities as the other S.S. publications - so would seem relatively good value for money in my opinion.
Re a UK or European marketing a mag. I think some publishers would be very sceptical (*SP) in going down this line. I would say that Cardmaking is the main field in UK - there seems to be a new card making mag every other month. Over the last 12/18 months the number of scrapbook or stamping related mags that have bit the dust - and not just UK publications either - so not altogether too sure if publishers would be willing to put investment in this area of art - I know this little thread is building up interest daily but realistically is there a big enough audience? Would be interedting to see what develops though.

Sorry Jane - no hyperlink (no blog !) just a banner to say I was taking part in the challenge. Haven't really done much with it as I had to pack all my stash away in Feb due to an underground burst we had and thats why i took up art journaling. Just needed a quick craft fix and all my stash was put in hybernation. Although saying that the last job (laying laminate floor) was completed today :) - but to be honest am in no rush to get stash out and start scrapbooking again as I am enjoying my AJ too much - and its less mess (in a way/sort of??)
I'm sure after my holidays though i'll be keen to get back into scrappbooking as I'll have all my holiday pics to scrap.

I'm glad you were able to get it sorted. I haven't printed it out ~ thought I might do it a bit at a time as and when I needed it.
I've just signed up to do an online course called Masterful Art Journaling: from the website:
"you’ll get inspiration from art masters that will help take your art journaling in new directions. From each week’s art history context, we’ll extract art techniques, exercises and journaling prompts to help you play, stretch, and explore as a journaling artist. We’ll be inspired by the artists’ colors, style, and method of expression. We’ll also explore our own response to the questions the artists posed to the world through their art and their lives."
I'll let you know how I get on.

It doesn't indicate what level it is for - it seems a pretty open category - so I say go for it. Its all techniques that's managable and that can be built on

I think it would depend on how far you're willing to stretch ... most of your scrapbooker skills will help you out. From the description of the classes, it sounds like there will be lots of experimentation with styles etc. so you'll get lots of practice (is that 'practise' in the UK...I'm never sure, sorry!) with new techniques, materials and tools, as well as some good backgrounding in art generally. I'd say go for it!
If I didn't have so much going on myself, I'd be interested in taking it, especially now that I've spent a fortune on paints, mediums, gesso, etc.!

I've signed up! :D Here goes for my first attempt at art journalling!!
JaneH - you can sign up for the class at any time - they seem to be archived and "do at your own pace" so could be something you consider later on when you have time :)

Hm, that's good to know. I'll keep that in mind, but hopefully I'll be able to do the course "live".

 entered too! I might be tempted to go for it if I don't win ....
I signed up for it and although I was away when the class started so haven't done anything the two classes posted so far look fantastic. Fortunately she does them as PDF files so it is possible to download them and work on them later. There's certainly more stuff to do than there's time for between postings!
OMG I can't believe i just walked into a lcs to get stampers sampler and picked up Art Journaling winter 2010. It's arrived ladies. Look out for it.
