I was just watching a vide of tim holtz demoing them and he said not to use them with photo paper. Can anyone tell me why not? I have only had one little try with them before but I'm pretty sure that's what we used... I have just ordered some inks and was going to use them with some photo paper I have lying around, but do I now need to get some other glossy paper as well?

You get an Ok effect on photo paper ... I used it for ages before I realised it was not the same as glossy cardstock  The main problem with photo paper is that after your alchohol inks have dried ... stamping images successfully over the top is a bit tricky! I found it fine to practice on.
I do find the best effect is on the Ranger glossy card ... It is something to do with the top coat of the card and how it is made.
I am not sure if I helped at all ... LOL ... Hey ho ... I tried :D:D:D

I'm not sure if I am remembering it right but doesn't the glossy paper Tim use have a clay coating which makes it different from normal photo paper and that's the main difference between the 2?

Ah, ok. I'm not going to stamp on it tho just use it as a backround and stick stuff on it, so I'm guessing it's ok to use the photo paper then? I'll def pratice on it before I get the "proper" stuff as it came free with a thing and I don't have a photo printer so no other use for it!
I was just worried it wouldn't "stick" or something!

Thanks ladies!!!

I use photo paper and its fine, although have never tried glossy card stock. Never felt the need to buy some as I am more than happy with the photo paper. Alcohol inks on acetate is lovely too, and you can stamp on one side and then alcohol ink the reverse.

You're correct Ang.

Photo paper has a different chemical make up than gloss cardstock. Each photo paper manufacturer makes their paper differently and it is not necessarily compatible with dye inks. Experiment with different brands to see what works for you.

Ranger Gloss Paper cardstock is a clay-based paper that works well with Distress and other dye inks.

I've used the cheapest photo paper from the pound shop, the results I've got do look like Tim Holtz's

I've used both the Ranger stuff and various photo papers. Some photo papers really aren't very good - the results are dull, and if you stamp over the top the alcohol ink can get lifted off by the stamp  Others are fine though! You just need to experiment a bit :)

Has anyone else done Tim's tip with the bottles? If you store them in a box then he suggested that you put a blob of white acrylic paint on the top then when dry put the ink over. That way you know which colour you are getting & save looking through the whole lot.

Yes, I've done it - did it several years ago :). It works for a while but I found that the colours kind of faded after a while so they don't give such a good colour guide
Thinking about it, maybe you could get some of those tiny little dot stickers (or make some yourself with bigger stickers and a hole punch), in white, ink them and stick them on top of the lid? The colour might stay on them a bit better :)
