Mod Podge question

Hi,

I seen a you tube video last week where the lady paints mod podge onto grungeboard, then sticks a text paper on, and then pains more mod podge on top of the paper and the grungeboard shape just comes away from the sheet of paper. I thought this was so great as it would save having to cut out the shape after you cover it IYKWIM?

I really hope I am explaining this properly and hopefully someone else may have seen the video and know exactly what I'm talking about!

Anyway, I went to buy some mod podge yesterday but there were about 4 different types and I have no clue which one the lady in the video used.

Does anyone know the technique I'm talking about and what type of mod podge to use?

Any help appreciated as I can't wait to try it out with my new grungeboard...

Can you post the link to the video please ? Mod podge is mod podge, but its usually only just either matt, glossy, opaque, and i think maybe coloured.

I use PVA instead of mod podge .. used to have the shiny one but found PVA just as good if not a bit better & a lot cheaper too :D

yup id go with ordinary pva glue, maybe water it down for the top layer... that way the glue will soak nicely into the paper and define the shape...

i make my own modpodge and save a tonne of money.. you can even make sparkly modpodge :)

Didn't realise I could have saved my money and used pva glue instead :o

Have any of you done what the lady in the video done? Is it as easy as it looks? Is pva shiny? I bought the matte mod podge as I don't really like shiny things :nono:

Am wondering if I should take it back now and make my own with pva :unsure:

i make 2 different ones... if i want a gloss finish i just add some waterbased varnish to the mix :)

ive not done what you are describing with text, but use it to cover chipboard shapes with pp...

Do you do it the same way as the lady in the video or do you have to cut the shape out after you have stuck the paper on?

oh lol sorry i didnt watch the video...

i smother the chipboard in pva, then i put the pp i want on top

dont wait for the layer to dry, but i use a bonefolder to quickly go over my shape, so i can faintly see the outline (i tend to very roughly cut the paper to size, say if im covering a 2.5" letter, i cut a 3" piece of paper), now i take some watered down pva glue and really smother the top so that the glue soakes into the paper...

then just lift off the paper carefully.. there are sometimes some edges left round the shape, but i just apply some more pva to the edges and stick them down firmly...

It is slightly different using Grungeboard than chipboard, as grunge is so flexible.
Make sure you work on a non stick mat and prepared to get very messy.
I have always loved using Mod Podge and have several different sorts.
I do not compare it to PVA as I have found over the years of doing altered stuff that Mod Podge is far longer lasting.
Just my preferance though.
Don`t take your bottle back, enjoy using a great product.:lol:

i used my american measuring cups :) and a good quality white glue ...

its 1 cup of glue to 1/3 cup of water, put in jar with screw lid and shake really well.. it will keep for ages in the jar..

if you want a gloss finish, add 2 tablespoons of waterbased varnish to the mixture..
you can also add a few drops of paints or glitter to give you different effects..

i bought a bottle of modpodge when i first started out altering.. at a super inflated price, my husband can be a bit of a nerd and researched the ingredients and said.. you know, i could have made you a gallon of that stuff for the price you paid for that bottle.. so thats how we went about experimenting. You can add more/less water, until you get the consistency you like.. i found that 1cp and 1/3 cp gives me the same slightly creamy consistency you get from modpodge...

I have decided to keep it and try it out tonight hopefully (if I can stay awake!). Should I let it dry to make sure the paper has stuck before I do a second coating? In the video she uses a heat gun so I assume it's ok to speed up drying with this...

Hi Floppy, I can only tell you what worked for me so here goes.
Plenty of Mod Podge then press paper down well then more Podge, zapped with heat gun (but not to close to singe paper LOL).
When you pull the Grungeboard piece away from the mat some bits might tear off, these can be patched up if need be later.
Tear gently all around the edge and then leave to dry.
Finish off be sanding edges before you move on to further decoration. I really hope you enjoy using your Grungeboard as much as I do.
You can get very different effects than using chipboard.

Right, I done 2 attempts before I seen your last post ambermouse, and both of them were disasters :rolleyes:

When I read your post I tried for a third time but after putting on plenty on MP and pressing the paper down, I forgot to lift it before I applied a second coat and got the heat gun out...the whole thing stuck to the sheet I had it on in the first place :ph34r::wacko:

In all 3 attempts I ended up cutting the paper with my craft knife as it wasn't tearing away on it's own, have no idea what I'm doing wrong (apart from in the last attempt!). I am wasting my yummy grungeboard and am thinking about giving up on it :(

What type of paper do you use? I wanted to create a similar look to the one in the video so used a page out of a book, I also tried it with a sheet of PP to see if that was any different and the result was the same... :(

If it goes wrong just soak the grungeboard in some warm water with some handwash gel in to get your paper off.
It won`t hurt the Grungeboard. Then you can try again.
I first try a new technique with a small item like a heart or Butterfly etc. Save the large posh shapes untill you can do it with confidence.
I have used pages from a travel atlas (very flimsy paper) and also thick stuff like Basic Grey.
The thicker the page the more glue required.
If tearing the edges is causing you the problems then I would do a few things and just cut around with a craft knife or scissors before sanding the edges. Good luck next time.
