Just wondering... I have been sent a brass baccy tin which belonged to my G grandad. It has his name on, the date is 190 something - worn away with use! - and the word Haulier. Is there something like a business directory for Swansea in the 1900s I cd search?

you might find something here or do a search for Kellys trade directories
I know there is some online as I've used them but can't find the right link

Another to try is http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Haven't been on there for a couple of years, but found it quite handy back then,

Karen, just been into the historical directories link - it's fantastic! At the end of the Kellys directory I was looking thru, are a load of adverts placed by local businesses... some great images for scrapbooking. Also found out what one of mum's lot was as could not read the census image. He was a Lath Renderer. something to do with cement.
Also, which was totally unexpected as I was looking for Mum's Swansea family, there is an ad for a haulage & coal merchant. In my Dad's mother's maiden name. They were in Dudley. his G Grandad on the census forms was a carter then a coal merchant! Think this must be a cousin or something.
Can't wait now to have a look through the other online directories for other towns I'm interested in.
So thanks again. What a little treasure trove it's proved. Never realised there was so much online.

Glad you've found it useful! Love the idea of using the ads as part of scrapbooking!! Need to revisit and see if anything new has emerged since I last looked.

I've a hub of my family in Dudley too (Netherton part) and they were mainly Coal Miners or related industries. The Dudley Archives is well worth a visit if you're in the area - the people there are really helpful too.

.... Netherton is where Dad's grandma was born apparently, tho her parents had moved to Wolverhampton st, Dudley, by 1861 census. I wd def be interested in going to have a look round, it's not too far from Shropshire.

On the very slight off-chance, the surnames I'm researching in Dudley ... Hancox/Hancocks (originally from Somerset), Ball/Baugh (originally from Shropshire), Aston (orginally from Tipton/Puppy Green), Prosser (originally Pembrokeshire & Dursley) and Jones. The Jones branch has connections with the name Davenport/Devonport ...

Karen, my gt.uncle Jack (John Francis Blackham) married an Eva May Prosser in 1935 in Sparkbrook, Birmingham. I wonder if she is from your Prosser line; I have no further details of her family I'm afraid but I know she was born 8.5.1904 and d. 7.1.1995 in Winson Green, Birmingham. She and Jack had a daughter, Patricia. I have a photo of Jack and Eva.

Sorry Karen, although Shropshire and Pembroke and Jones are also all in my 'trees', those names aren't. Which makes a change. Was beginning to think I was related to everyone. It's heading towards being a huge scrapbook as it is.

Sadly, I think it's unlikely :(. My Prosser branch had moved up to Barrow in Furness in the early 1870's (although they must have had connections back in Dudley as my gt grandfather Prosser was born in Barrow in 1879 but married a Dudley lass in 1905. Once married they lived in Barrow. As far as I'm aware, all his siblings married "up North" but you never know about their children!
