View Full Version : A question - image size?

It occured to me that while I tend to use US Legal size for my file size when A4 is just that little bit too small, most people won't have a way to print that if they want to.
So, over all, would people prefer that we recommend multiple A4 size pages for the attachments, or doe the size not matter because you are likely to only view it on your screen?

I tend to end up copying them and pasting them into word where i re-size everything.

Having sent out over 200 attachments of die-cutting info, I would have said 99% print them out & refer to them.

Would attaching as PDFs make it easier or you would rather use images?
Personally I save the file but when I come to using it, then I would print it out as reference.

From experience it is best sent as the simplest of files. rtf will open on most if not all computers. Not all people have the know how to open different files.

I'd prefer A4 personally.
PDF would allow you to control modifications and help retain any copyright (although they're not foolproof), and as it's free more people are likely to be able to use them. You can now get a free pdf creator. The trouble with RTF is the restrictions on what you can do, not the end of the world but PDF is more versatile.

One slight problem on my laptop. I always do my documents in Works Word & there isn't a facility to save to a PDF file on that. Do have office Word but as yet not worked out how to use it properly. Can't even find the save as bit!!!! Not got time to mess at the moment.

I only use OpenOffice so I tend to copy and paste anything I want into another document.
I only view instructions on screen and very rarely print them out. HTH xx

Office Word doesn't have a PDF generator either, these are mostly plug-ins and work just like a printer - ie. you print your document to a PDF rather than saving it as a PDF.
Check out Primo PDF (http://www.primopdf.com). Takes a second to download and install and you're off printing PDFs!

I usually print off techniques that I want to try out. I store them on the computer as well, but my craft area does not lend itself to me putting the laptop where I can see it whilst I craft. I usually print it and support it somehow while I work. A4 would be best... and I totally agree with the PDF files..... much easier for most people to open.
I just downloaded the pdf creator from the link above, but cant find it now..... did it install at the same time it downloaded?
I am going to see if I can print to PDF from Word to see if it worked.
Nope..cant find it anywhere, did a search too. I am a bit dim with these things if they are not obvious. Help!!!!

I have been doing the techniques tutorials (is anyone else going to do one? I hope so!) as JPG images because I felt that was something everyone would be able to download and print. I can also do them as PDFs if some prefer.

I have voted, I don't print out everything but sometimes it is handy. Again I would prefer A4 but it's no drama if I have to change the document size before printing or copy it into something else.
PDF's are good as Adobe reader is free so everyone would be able to use it and you can zoom in or out if you just want to view on screen.

I would do one MaryAnne but I don't know anything that other's don't already know iykwim and anything unusual or fantastic I have usually learned from someone else's tutorial.

xxpaddler, it shouldn't have installed the moment it downloaded, you still have to run the install files. Go to the website again and click on download, but this time don't click OK. From the pop-up window, you should be able to tell which directory it downloaded to. Once you have noted this down, cancel the dialogue box and go find the file! If you still can't find it, download it again and note down where it saves it to if you haven't chosen this yourself.
MaryAnne, as I've only been scrapping for a teeny while, there's no way I'll be doing any technique tutorials yet!!

Thank you. I have Vista and it acts a bit different to XP. This is the first time I have downloaded a .exe file since I had this laptop. I did not realise how it worked!
Duh... you wanna know something really scary? I work in IT projects! Then again, I only have to make the requests and track the work.... I don't have to know how it works!
I am now up and running with PrimoPDF

Good to hear that you managed to sort it out. Hubby has Vista on his laptop, but I'm resisting it so far!

Most PDF creators work as a printer driver. In other words, you make your document or photo etc. in whatever software you use (Word, Photoshop Elements, etc.) then when you want to make the PDF, you choose File > Print and instead of picking your printer, you pick the PDF-maker (like CutePDF, PrimoPDF, DeskPDF, etc.) in the Printer dialog box. It will then spin away like crazy and create your PDF. Depending on which PDF you use, it may or may not offer you other options along the way.
So probably it IS installed, xxpaddler, but it's NOT a program in the typical sense. Hope that helps.
