Hi
I'm going to the Scrapbook Exhibition at Alexandra Palace in London in September for the first time.
Can anyone give me any hints or tips that has been before about what to expect. Also are any of the Sponsors doing any workshops there?
Many thanks
Ali
just take plenty of money

Got my ticket for the sunday, went for the first time in april. Shame about the workshops. Have an idea of what stalls you want to go to first, have a look at the exhibitors list and their websites, take plenty of money, on the sunday in april the cash machine broke, though they where running a free shuttle bus to the nearest one lol. Wear comfy shoes, take a big bag with you, enjoy yourself.

Thanks for that Sam - I did wonder why the 'workshop' link had disappeared from the Scrapbook Exhibition's homepage.

Thanks girls for all the useful information. I'm so excited about going - but wanted to have the 'heads up' before I go; so I don't waste any valuable shopping time!!
Amcmen - thanks for the info about food - sounds like I should take my own - which will mean I have more money for stash! lol!

I'm really excited about Ally Pally - especially as it was a surprise birthday present and I didn't expect to go.
Always wanted to go as I've never been before and heard such good things about it. Now it can't come round quick enough!

Went to the April one and it was well worth it. Agree with take plenty of money and have a plan of the stores you want to visit and a basic idea of what you want.
There is a shuttle bus from Wood Green Station right to the door, agree with comfortable shoes and layered clothing - it can get very hot in their, in April they were worried about raining so the roof was closed most the day.
Their is also a free cloak room that you can leave you bags in. Was advised last time not to take my wheeled tote - but I did and was glad I had especially for the journey home.

Well at the mo I would just like to get a look at some grunge board as I keep seeing it being mentioned and I love the look of the little skulls but otherwise will just be having a look to see what's there :P
daft question - I see mention that I should take a big bag - do you get carrier bags from the sellers or should I take a couple of my canvas ones?
We were dithering about taking a picnic but def will now and we are treating ourselves to a pasty from Victoria Station on the way home! (Almost looking forward to that just as much!)

I always drive down to this show as the parking is free and I have found it really easy to get to.
One thing is I found its always quite hot in the hall especially when the crowds really build up so I leave coats and jumpers in the car and just wear short sleeves, its worth braving any cold for a few minutes rather than an hour later sweating and having to carry round a coat rather than a lovely new stack of paper.
Enjoy.

if the weather is hot-I always make sure i have ice water with me----it does get very hot in there!!! Def take a packed lunch!!
if you are a UKS'er wear some form of badge, so we can all recognise each other
had a few people come say hello last time:lol:
I agree with lots of cash, the machine is notorious (sp) for breaking down!!!
Shame they aren't doing workshops this time, as i did a few in April and had a great time:D

This hopefully will be my 3rd time attending - i go along with 2 other team members. I always drive as parking is free and plentifull.
We do not take any food - we always catch a late breakfast around 11ish before the lunch time crowds ( a lovely bacon sarnie and chocolate bar ) more than enough to keep you going).
Always have more than enough time to browse - and always last to leave.
Do take plenty of money - so many bargains to be had!!!!
It really is a brilliant day.

Take a sturdy bag suitable to be able to put a 12x12 paper store in it.......if you intend buying papers you need to take some kind of paper store to protect them, I normally take one of the plastic pizza boxes, tho they are always on sale for approx £4 each, which is good value..........good comfy shoes is a must too, as you'll walk your little socks off!!!! oooh! I'm definitely going, we're away in Sept and I was really hoping the show wouldn't be while I'm away, and it isn't!
I went in April and spent far too much money!, but that wont stop me going again and spending more!
there was so much lovely stuff there in April, so many stamps! I could have bought hundreds! :)
I'm really looking forward to it :):):)

I went in April for the first time and really enjoyed it, going again in September. I made sure I only took cash so was not tempted to spend over my budget. Real shame the workshops have been cancelled I took the Banana Frog one in April and it was fantastic. Was going to take a couple this time :( only positive thing about no workshops is a little more money to spend on stash  Would agree with the comment on water, packet lunch, comfy shoes and no coats or jumper, it does get VERY hot in there.
I organised a coach time up last time but going to get BF to drop me off and pick me up this year as he lives local. Better get saving our pennies ladies!!

I've not had my cuttlebug long. Are there any embossing folders that you find particularly useful and what do you use to highlight the embossed image?
Thanks

I don't hilight the embossing at all - I'm mainly a cardmaker :)
All of the folders can be used in a multitude of ways - just go with the ones you like....

I think I'm underusing my cuttlebug. The alphabets annoy me - unless I'm doing it wrong I seem to use up loads of paper to get one word  Have all but given up on the alphas and started printing out and handcutting titles on my pc.
I do like some of the embossing folders so will keep an eye out for them. I want to get a look at grungeboard as I keep hearing about it and I love the look of the little skulls. Hopefully see some of that there.

What I do with my alphabet dies, I cut my card/paper into strip - the same width as the die, then cut the strips to be height of each letter then cut the paper stripe to fit over the letter, sound a bit fiddly but it works for me.
Example:
Die measures 2" wide, cut strip 2" wide, the each letter measures 2" high - cut the 2" wide strip into 2" high - you are left with a 2" square, then cut this in half length way - so that you are left with a 2" high by 1" card/paper piece, to go over the letters to be used. Then I just placed them over the letters to be used.

Went to the April one and was hoping to go along again, but just been booked to do a wedding on the Saturday and they attend a wedding fayre on the Sunday, I was getting myself already for the big spend :stop: - eh oh - I'll have to wait to NEC in November.
I got some Grungeboard at the last show and yes, its great, I got the mixed pack with various elements in and have still got loads left. Also got a Big Bite, but I would definate make a list - even though you will weaver from it it might (:D) keep you abit focus.
I checked out the web site to see which shops where going to attend, then checked out their web-site and noted things that they sold that I wanted, that way you can make a bee-line for them 1st - saves you a bit of time thinking whether the shop has what you want.
Take advantage of the free clothroom, great for off loading your bag and coat and you can go back as many time as your want to drop your bags off (noticed I put bags) LOL

I have never been to the NEC one, but have been to Ally Pally for the last 3 years at least---it is the most amazig building--on a clear day you can see London (its on the top of a huge hill :D) the arcitecture is amazing too :D
Have done the make-it show too (both at Thorpe Park and now at Farnborough) and I still prefer Ally Pally :D

Ally Pally was the very first one that I went to and I have been to the NEC a few times but if I had to choose between the two it would be Ally Pally hoping to go again in Sep. dont think I shall get to the NEC this time but then I did go at the begining of the year.
Take plenty of cash and leave your credit cards at home, the one thing I always do is to split my money into differant purses so that I never lose every thing. ( I am sure you know what I mean). I have always been lucky never had a problem but I know of people who have.

Hi Viv,
I live in Birmingham and NEC is only 1/2 hour away so more convenient to go to. I found that the NEC is a lot bigger than Ally Pally and the NEC catered for a larger range of crafts, eg sewing, knitting, card making, painting, scrapbooking, jewellery, wood turning etc - but saying that it can get very busy and it involves a lot of pushing and shoving to get in and out of the stands:ph34r:
Only been to Ally Pally once, and was very impressed, it was big not as big as I expected and even though there were alot of people they there didn't seem to be alot of pushing. I mainly visited the Scrapbooking stands and skipped the obviously card making ones.
In comparison NEC is more expensive to visit I think the tickets are £8.00 each, and its £8.00 to parking:ph34r: - not so bad if a few of you can car share, and I think they charge for the clothroom. But when you add your price of your ticket for Ally Pally, the train fare, the tube fare it might work out just as expensive.
The main thing is to have a basic idea of what you want, and visit some websites to get some ideas of prices.
If you've not been to the NEC if might be worth a visit to the next one in November, you never know you might find a few bargains :lol:LOL

I went to the NEC last year and wasnt very impressed, not really any bargins to be had compared to previous years, and not too much 12x2 :-( so really after the tickets, parking and petrol, we could of saved that money and spent it in the local craft shop on more stash!!

I'm going on the Saturday. OH's Mum booked me a ticket with local coach company for my birthday back in June. OH's Mum does cardmaking so hopefully there will be some stuff there for her too - but I think she is going mainly for my benefit :D- which is really nice of her as she knows how nuts I am about scrapbooking! Shame there aren't any workshops this year.
Cool that you have your DH drop you on his way to game - take the stress out of driving and finding a place to park. My OH is a Gooner; so I don't think he will be at the game!! lol!!!

I went in april on the sunday which was really nice and relaxed. I stayed in the travelodge on the M4 at Reading- took me approx an hour from there but there was road works and diversions because it was the marathon that sunday so it should be quicker this time- hopefully she says:unsure: Are you going Gill?

Been both days, but prefer Saturday as they do sell out of stuff quickly, so if you see it and really want it, would advise getting it. This happened to me, thought I would wait and go back, then they had sold out and were not getting any more in.

I nearly always go on a Sunday I guess because we drive and its a bit quieter for the drive down. Never had a problem with them selling out although I suppose if you don't know that they had it in the first place you don't know that you missed out.

If you are driving, this is fine, would probably take around 20-25 minutes depending on the traffic, if you are not driving, then public transport would be rather complicated!

I've been going on and off for years, since it was The Big Rubber Stamp show held at The Commonwealth Institute in London.
It's much better now at Ally Pally and the addition of scrapbooking stash is great.
I'll be driving my people carrier full of crafty friends on the Sunday as usual...Saturday is too crowded for my liking and if something is sold out, that's life.
No tips other than what's already been said, especially plenty to drink.
I'm hoping I'll have lots of money to spend...thats my birthday :D

Anyway I ask because I have a bit saved and OH is contributing a bit on the day  but have now seen perfect crimbo pressie for him and am in dillemma of getting it out of what I've saved or wait till I see what I spend and hope pressie is still available after. Whenever I go I take cash so that I don't overspend and I remember the first time I went I spent about £150 it has gradually decreased each time I have gone I suppose because having bought all the big stuff I was just browsing for bits, the last time I went I spend about £90

Never been to Ally Pally before, so some questions.... :D
Do I need to make sure I have cash, or will the stallholders take plastic?
Is it PC to bring a bag on wheels, or is that considered bad form? :D
Which is the best day to go?
Thanks
Lyn

Some take plastic but they have a minimum sale amount (usually £10 or more), so best to have plenty of cash. It also avoids queues at the card tills. I've never gotten out of there for less than £200 (cash and cards combined) and sometimes much more than that!
I take a small bag on wheels and I try to be very, very careful with it to not bump into people or block anyone. In the stalls, it's more trouble than it's worth, but I'd never be able to carry everything without it. Especially THIS year, if I go, as I'm just getting over surgery and not supposed to lift or carry ANYthing heavier than a bottle of water! People will just have to growl at me (and they DO sometimes).

I was thinking of just taking some of my less bulky shopping bags. my trolley on wheels is abit dilapidated (sp?) so dare not take that! Plus i am now taking hubby so he can carry stuff aswell now:)

Just popping in to say Hi to everyone! We will be on Stand 20. Am so looking forward to the show. It so fab and well organized. Soooooo much to do in the meantime though! We have had heaps of goodies coming in over the last couple of weeks, (I haven't even finished pricing it all) and we have loads more arriving this week. Assuming it arrives in time, we will be bringing the latest yummies from Tim Holtz, Autumn Leaves, Basic Grey, Maya Road, Fancy Pants, Bazzill, Prima, Making Memories, Teresa Collins, Round It Alls, Fiskars Treading Water Punch, Ali Edwards' new book, Elsie's Recipe Box and that is just a taster! And Christmas will be in the air at Scrap Revolution!
Advice
Someone suggested bringing cash and that is definitely the best advice as it is so much quicker - so less standing in queues and more browsing time! Also we sometimes have problems with our CC machine at the really busy times and so cash becomes the only option.
What day to come?
Saturday is very busy - so if you want to avoid the rush then aim for Sunday. But if you want first dibs on the new stuff Saturday is when you will get the choice. Peeps do grab what they want the minute they see it cos they know it will be gone by the time they get back.
Wheely totes - they do take a lot of room and I would imagine they would be cumbersome to manage in a crowd so only bring one if you have to - another idea may be to bring a couple of 12x12ish bags with shoulder straps as they don't weigh you down so much. If you are driving there, you could then unload them to the car. I have seen many hubbies who come along as bag carriers! LOL! Or if you are coming with a friend you could take it in turns to offload to the car. HTH.

I got it from a shop in the Ohio, USA called Archivers. It is made just for them and they have quite a few different ones. I'm going to have my mom get me a couple different ones next time she goes there.
If you ever go to the US look out for that shop as it is one of the best shops for scrapbooking!!

I was wandering around the house this morning, when I was suddenly struck by the thought that Ally Pally was today! Seeing as it was 11 am and I wasnt dressed, I got really grumpy, thinking I'd missed it.
Fortunately, I was wrong :)
So, see you next Sunday! I've managed to save £120 in £1 coins over the last few months, so thats my spending money (I'll change it up for notes, I wont be lugging around coins!)
I'm very much looking forward to it, I've got no list and nothing I particularly want apart from some 'greetings' stamps. but I bet I'll easily spend my £120 :)

Jackie that's roughly what I've got saved. We went to EuroDisney in the summer hols for a couple of days and I was grumbling about the price of souveniers. My OH said 'how about what we don't spend we split and you can take yours to Ally Pally and I'll buy a few birdy bits.' You guessed it - we came home with a fridge magnet between us and change the euros back for this!

I've seen first-timers walking around looking shell-shocked. Last time I was standing in the queue waiting for the doors to open and talking with two women (who came together). One of them had made 'a few cards' and the other had made only one. The latter asked me 'What is scrapbooking?' I nearly choked! I explained as well as I could, then just shook my head and told her to take a deep breath when she got inside and go slow. I always wonder how those two made out! ;)

Getting quite excited now. Although a bit too excited!!
I had a really bizarre dream last night... I dreamt I went to the show, went all around but forgot to collect some stuff i ordered from vikki and didn't get round the whole show so I was all confused about how I missed loads of stuff!
You know the Making Memories noteworthy range has the die cut 12x12 sheets in the nice shapes etc? In my dream shops were selling acrylic stamps in those diecut shapes so they were these huge stamps! How mad is that??
And then I had to go back the next day to collect my order!
Vikki, I pm'd you regarding a question about the stamps I asked about :)
