Is there somewhere that explains what the all mean and not just a list of what they are?

I've been here a while now (ahem) and understand most of them but I'm stuck on what a filter violation might be? I know some are covered in FAQ and some are self explanitory but it might help if they were all explained in one place?

I was wondering about the filter infraction and thought it must mean when someone tries to get round the swearing filter, I might be wrong though so would like to know incase I do something I shouldn't without realising!

Exactly that.

Typing other characters to make swear words like a 1 for an "i" in a swear word. Or using stars instead of characters in swear words so you can guess what it is.

Can i ask a question without getting fined please.....

How often do these things happen that we need a list of rules??? Surely as a group of adults..... we are able to compose ourselves in an adult manner...

Will moderators be policing the boards or just being told someone has posted something??? im worried that UKS is going to be a totalitarian state????

Sometimes the filter spots a word that isnt a swear word.... will we be fined for that???

Surely the use of stars should be allowed... just because the human brain deciphers words that we have filtered out ourselves we havent actually written a swear word..... would a fine be appropriate?? is the use of pseudo swear words such as froggit..... be banned too??? surely the intent there is the same as using stars???

Sorry to question this but im a bit concerned that all of a sudden there is a penal system in place, in a group of adults... :(

There is no need for bad language on the forums. No need to try and cover it up. And yes the mods pretty much read most of the posts and others that are missed are reported regularly. All the mods edit/delete any swearing in threads as it is. Nothing has changed there except now they have power to give warnings to members about it.

any chance of a list of what is and what isnt a swear word tho, obviously the main ones we all know, but how do you define swear word? i dont want to list them, but perhaps you could list the acceptable norty words?for instance there are words in harry potter, which is rated U that i consider swear words? also there are regional variations, somethign that means something here doesnt ness mean it ooop north etc.

blimmin? flipping? bliddy?

Infractions are a part of forum life now and it is proven that it works. We just haven't used them since we had the option 2 years ago. But with more and more members now things need to change. Only the person with the infraction knows they have it.

Out of interest, sometimes the filters star out part of a word that is purely innocent - the Yorksire town S thorpe is the only one that comes to mind but there are others - and I have used get-arounds so the whole word is written to help with understanding. Are we still allowed to do that?

Here is the deal:

We have a list of censored words. If you type them they get starred out. If you type a banned word, and it gets starred out, there is no need for any infraction to be assigned - even if you can "guess" what the word might be. That is what the censorship filter is for.

If, however, you ALTER the word so the word, minus a vowel for example, appears, that is a "filter violation" because you have intentionally sought to sidestep the rules, and clearly you were aware of the rules because you knew enough to sidestep them :)
But even so that is ONE POINT- hardly something to worry about unless, like Cal you "swear like a trooper" :) and do it in every post. One point per infraction would add up eventually.

Yes we are all adults, and as adults most of us know we must sometimes adapt our behaviour to the rules of any situation. The rules of UKS are that we have chosen to ban swearing on the boards. We have mechanisims in place to help enforce that. This is just one more way. We are not going to troll the boards seeking out swearing, and dealing out infractions like a mad, but if we see it, or if it gets reported, we will deal with it.

Really this is not different from how we have always done things except rather than the mods needing to keep track mentally of people who break the same rules over and over again, despite being told what those rules are, the software will keep track of it for us.

There is no problem saying Scunthorpe, the filters can cope with that, if there are other examples then we can alter the filters.

We don't really need a list, if you think about it. If you type it and when you read your post you know it is starred out and therefore not allowed. If we haven't banned it don't worry about it. If we ban it in the future, you will soon know :) And like I said, we are not going out ther looking for infractions, and we have in the past had people report posts with what I would call rated U words (like 'flipping" - we all KNOW what you mean but we don't police peoples thoughts, for goodness sake, so people who report something like that will get told that UKS does not consider that swearing)

As to regional variations, I suppose we would have to consider them on a case by case basis - but I'll hold people to that "we are adults" comment from before and trust that they aren't going to start adding all sorts of rude regional sayings to UKS just for spite or to try to catch us out. :D

Thanks for answering my question about the filter.

It would still be helpful to newbies if there was a list explaining what the infractions actually mean though. I know quite a few new posters have had to have it explained about posting non-sponsor links for instance, not realising they had broken the rules. I've lost count of the times I have read 'I dont understand why my post has been deleted' by people who didnt realise they had broken a rule.

Just a thought.

Can we still say ROFLMAO and PMSL as that is a way of getting round the swearing? Will I get an infraction now? (Don't know what one of those is, but it sounds painful!)

I think you are taking this a bit far really :) Infractions will only be used if a mod feels it is justified. It is not automatic. There isn't a robot mod going to do this.

If someone knows a swear word will be blotted out by ***** stars on the forums but deliberately changes the letters to avoid that, it is a justified infraction. It is only 1 point. You would have to get a lot of infractions to get banned. And it just serves as a warning for that person. No one else except the mods know that person has an infraction. It's not a public tar and feathering :)

I'm still rofl'ing from the banner telling us to get off UKS - not sure about to do the housework tho - how about get off UKS and do some scrapping?! That would be a real help to quite a few of us :lol::lol:

So if you use a swear word and leave it starred out, is it OK...is it only a infraction if you then add letters to it like cr@p, just asking so I'm sure I've understood it properly
