The site changes ..

Can anyone explain to me in easy terms what the changes will mean to us as users?

I've read the note posted by smax, but I'm afraid it's beyond my very limited (non-existent!) IT knowledge.

So for example: how do we keep in touch with our teams? if we're already in a swap and have a subscription to the thread, will that remain? are we losing messages that are in our pm folders? will log on be the same? will we still be able to post like we do now? what does it mean that you can't chat with people unless you're "invited"? etc., etc., etc.,

If I'm coming across as thick, that'll be because when it comes to computers, I am!!

Thanks for any help that can be offered.

And having read quite a few threads over the last day, I don't think I'm the only one with these thoughts!!

Log in will be the same and your PM's will be ok too. Think subscriptions stay the same too.

From what i can understand is that when team leaders start a team thread, the thread will only be open for team members to post on. So for example, i am in a team called the Alphabetties, so when a new thread is started, you would be able to read it, but you wouldnt be able to post in it because you havent been invited to post. If your invited to post, then thats ok. Does that make sense? Like your in the Rockin' Ribbon Raiders, i cant post on your team thread unless i am invited to do so.

I think posting will be the same, except the order of the posts. So the first post will be at the end of the thread and the newest post will be at the top. So in the new system, my reply will be before your question.

I hope that makes sense and if i'm wrong on any part, then i'm sure someone can correct me (i haven't heard of the DIBB, so just going by what i understand of the post)

Everything as you know it will stay the same, just with some extra features. The only thing we are going to try is the new social groups for teams. You will get to social groups from QUICK LINKS. You will then see the groups listed like in my screenshots in the announcement thread.

We will have to suck it and see with the social groups. It is so new that we have no experience on how to runs them. It will take its own form in time.

Re private messages. Yes they will stay exactly the same. Public messaging is just for fun chats in people profiles. Profiles can also be personalised to your own requirements. You will be able to change the colours and fonts in your profile. Add backgrounds and images/borders to the boxes. We already have some OTT ones on theDIBB. You need your sunglasses on in some. They should have a government health warning before entering :)

Team chat threads don't HAVE to be started every month now. Us Nooby Boobies are still on a 'New Year Natters' thread..... it's rolled a couple of times since 1st Jan, but (due to home-life commitments for some of us) we've not been chatty enough to be worth starting a new thread on 1st of each month :rolleyes:

So long as the Crop Chat post is in the forum, and isn't started as a social group chat, it will not be affected.

SGC makes the most sense when it is a set group, ie a UKS team, that has a defined membership. Something like Crop Chat will likely be a shifting membership, people may decide to go to a crop last minute, and there will be no set team leader. But if 4 people were planning to meet up for coffee, or car pool, it might make more sense for someone of them to start a chat so they could all discuss it amongst themselves rather than bore to rest of the Crop chat group with the details!

I think the Team threads will be gone when all the team leaders have started their Social Groups - which I have just found by clicking on Quick Links :rolleyes:

I think I get this now. So for instance, you can start a Social Group even if you are not a team leader. So if four or five of us, who normally chat on a crop or team thread, decide to go to Ally Pally (or wherever), we can start a social group to discuss the outing and details without monopolising the normal thread with our discussions. Cool.

so sorry but can i just say that i dont like it (yeh i know there is always one lol)....i hate the fact that new messages are one page 1 which means when i come from my bookmark i have to scroll all the way down the screen to get to page 1 grrrr......picture as far as i can tell now go on a main bit at the top and you cant put them in an individuals post any more....cant find a quote button anywhere........umm sorry to burst anyone's bubble and i really dont mean to moan but in my honest oppinion i dont like it at all :):)

The idea is to keep the site fast. No huge signatures or other junk on the page so it loads nice and fast. It is all just chat 99.99% of the time in those threads. So this is what you have. A nice clean display of chat.

No offence Smax (I like a lot of the changes) but I think the problem is that while it might all just look like chat, that's not necessarily how we actually use it. We use people's signatures from chat, we like to quote each other, for example. Great that it makes the site faster, but fast *chat* isn't always what we want. A lot of team threads only get a handful of posts a day.

And I have to agree that I hate having to read upwards!!!

I didn't invent this. It is not my software. The forum uses vBulletin and it is the new version of vBulletin. This is a new feature and that's what it is supposed to be used for. I have seen it in action on all the upgraded forums. It is the way all the vb forums are going.

i think the main problem will coe with threads being top to bottom and SGC being bottom to top. it will get me in a mess i know! as for quoting - you cant even cut and paste and put BB code round it :(

What I did was copy the text you want to quote, paste it into message box. Then highlight it and click on the square ballooney thing (if you move your cursor over it, it says wrap [quote]tags round selected text) -it just does it for you.

Remember I didn't write this software. That is how the designers have decided it should be and they haven't given us the option to change the order of display.

There are a few other things I would like to make optional too but I dont have the options in admin. I am sure when enough feedback is given to vBulletin they will give us these options. Once it has been used out in the real world it often has to be modified to suit the way people want it to work.

I have a couple of questions.

Firstly - is there anywhere we can have a 'notice' area on our team thread? On our team and on our house thread, me and Kerry always put important info in out first post - like when voting on house challenges are, when team CJ have to be posted etc etc. But if the thread run from bottom to top, then the posts will get lost and not many people will bother to look. So could there be a bit where the photos go so that we can put important info for all the team members?

Also, can we have notifications when someone has posted on the team social group?

I'm sure we'll all get used to the new layouts etc and i want to say thanks to Smax for answering all our questions and learning about the software along with us! lol

You're not on your own hun. I don't like it either. I know it's change and I know we'll probably all get used to it, but I think in comparison to this sort of thread, where it's easy to read and follow the new "social" groups are anything BUT social. They are flaming difficult to read, I've got my nose up by my screen to see them, they are upside down, you can't see who is on line, it's not sociable at all :wacko: Now I'm off to sulk in the corner!!! :lol:

I should point out that we have 520 people online and the site is still blazing. In the past, 200 tended to slow things down. This has to be a GOOD thing.

Also, Smax tells me that the vB forum has already had other forum owners and operators comment on many of the same issues we are having problems with. It is not uncommon for them to immediately issue a 2nd upgrade to address the problems that many are pointing to. So it may just be a matter of hanging fire for a week or so till vB addresses the complains, programs the changes, and makes a new update available. We are bang up to date with out fees for the software upgrades so Smax will be watching.

Where do you mean? It's in your signature and displays here. Do you mean in the SG section?

That is designed to be fast, for chat. Hence there is no option to add stuff that would slow it down - signatures, countdowns. etc. And teh last post first thing is another decision out of our hands - that is part of the design, not something we chose. But again, we could very well see more options added in a future (but soon, not months) upgrade

I appreciate the need to do things to speed up the site, but hate the Social Group thing with a passion!

I can live (more than happily) without all the signatures in there..... as I've been staying in touch on my mobile during the day I have to turn off avatars, signatures and pictures anyway to stand any chance of a page loading before I'm due back in the office.

Not being able to see which Social Group(s) I'm a member of have new posts is annoying -- a 'last post' date/time in the list of my groups would solve that, as I know roughly when I was last on-line.

Not being able to jump in where I left off is frustrating, and even now on my home computer it's taking me a while to get back to where I left off (starting on guesswork until I get close)


But my biggest bugbear by far is the "upside down" of it all. I don't read blogs unless I'm pointed to a specific entry because I can't cope with this..... I really did try, but got soooo frustrated I gave up.


(It's also a lot harder to read on my mobile than the normal threads are, but I know I'm almost certainly in a tiny minority accessing UKS by that method -- just annoying when I got the phone and package specifically for keeping up with the team threads I chat on :ph34r: )

Just tried turning off photos, avatars and signature in my options before accessing a Social Group on my mobile..... doesn't stop any of these displaying.

BUT it did load the page faster than the normal style thread (even after turning those off), but I did used to be set to 40 posts a page and most of us had tickers than never turned off properly which don't show any more.

That got rid of all the pictures, and the two-tone blue behind the posts in the Social Groups makes it easier to follow.

Only 'hiccup' is the panel I see where it lists the groups I'm in.... they seem to wrap around lines rather than having the name of each group at the start of a line (not a big problem while I only have 4 though :lol: )


But -- WOWSER! It's loading everything on UKS sooooooo much faster :) Might actually manage to catch up on more than 2 or 3 threads when I take a break now :wub:

well after doing an impression of a headless chicken earlier, remembering to breath and taking it slow by george I think I've got it!!! and getting into it! Even set up my team social group, it was so easy thought I did it wrong!!! Thanks for all your hard work guys you really are all marvels and UKS has always amazed me at the amount of stuff you can do with it etc etc, and now we can do more! Im missing the subscribed new postings bit. As a house leader I am part of a lot a SG and its a nightmare trawling though them to see if there are any messages. Any ideas anyone - is there a 'box' I can tick to notify me of a new post?

Teams have 30 days to switch to social groups and then the team chat forum will be deleted.

As far as I can tell the rest of the forum is staying the same so you don't need to delete your signature.

I should point out that we have 520 people online and the site is still blazing. In the past, 200 tended to slow things down. This has to be a GOOD thing.

Also, Smax tells me that the vB forum has already had other forum owners and operators comment on many of the same issues we are having problems with. It is not uncommon for them to immediately issue a 2nd upgrade to address the problems that many are pointing to. So it may just be a matter of hanging fire for a week or so till vB addresses the complains, programs the changes, and makes a new update available. We are bang up to date with out fees for the software upgrades so Smax will be watching.

I cant beleive how fast it was last night while there were so many folks online! its fantastic.

the social groups issues arent affecting me coz im not in a team anymore so cant comment on that at the mo, I can see what others mean though after a quick squizz at a chat. I bet vB will be onto it really fast.

Wowsers to everything else though and I especially LOVE how you can totally customise profiles - so so cool!

its really easy once you've tried it, and you dont need to change anything permanently till you are happy with the preview of your page, if you absolutely HATE what you have changed just dont save and come out of it and you will still have the default colours and graphics in place. Or hit the 'set default' buttons to revert back.

take a photo of some paper that you would like as your background put it in your album (here on UKS) option to do that is in the quick link get it's url code
then go into your profile and play put this in the bkgd picture part and click the box next to it and on the dropdown click both
you may find you want to put it in lots of those places, what I did was put it in all then go back and take it out where it didn't seem right too a time to sort but well worth it now.

I like the changes:D I have been having huge problems the last couple of days posting replies but have been able to keep up with team chat through the social group which is really fast, I have had a little play with my profile and find it much easier to change things, I collect the points for our team and I will be able to do it all from the SG page by clicking on the team members pictures and viewing their profile as you can see the signitures from there so if someone hasnt been online for a while I wont have to trawl back through pages of posts to find them

I've found a problem with it... In here (and everywhere except the new Social Groups) I can get back to earlier posts - but in Social Groups I can only see the first page with the last 10 posts, and can't see any way of getting to posts from before them :(

Only the SG creator has the power to delete and others shouldn't see the deleted posts. Admin and mods can see all the deleted posts so I cannot confirm that. But I think it should look like they are not there at all to members of the group reading them.

They will only be visible to you though. Others should not see them as deleted. Just not there at all.

Ask someone who isn't a mod/admin to confirm that. We do cleanup the soft deleted posts every now and then when we get a spare 5 mins.

Leigh - you can get to people's sigs via their profiles in SGs. Click on their name, then on 'about me'

There is actually a 'little man' on the same line as their username on a post they make - pale grey they're off-line (or on-line in hidden mode), blue and they're on line.

Teaghan - when you upload it you have to put it in a certain album - when you create a new album it asks if you want it to be public, private or profile - create a profile album and put your images you want to use for your backgrounds in there.

Then - when you go to customise profile - next the boxes that say 'background' you will see a little picture box - click it and it opens your profile album and you just select which image you want to use through that - no need to cut and paste the address :)

I'm quite happy not to get email notifications, but would really like some way of knowing if there were new posts in the team chat. Seems a bit odd that there's more info shown about groups I'm not in, than there is about the ones I'm really interested in :wacko:

I'm sure I read somewhere that it might bepossible to have groups with unread / new messages shown in bold - that would be a fantastic improvement :)

I've just discovered one thing I will never, ever get used to:
In social groups, where the list of members appears at the top with our avs, I am "thesleepingro". I don't know what a ro is, and I don't particularly wish to be one (not that I could be considered a rose either, but...).

Does anyone reckon that's ever going to change so that we can see long usernames, or will I and others have to live as abbreviations for ever more?

I'm feeling a bit stalkerish - I've been looking at profiles admiring colour schemes and seeing how people have decorated them and noticed that my name then appears in their visitors box.:ph34r: I was also friend hopping - going to my friends profiles and then to their friends and their friends. I'm feeling a bit stalkerish - I've been looking at profiles admiring colour schemes and seeing how people have decorated them and noticed that my name then appears in their visitors box.:ph34r: I was also friend hopping - going to my friends profiles and then to their friends and their friends. You definitely can put a link though as I put links to my gallery and also you can put something in your album and attach that in your SG again I have done that.

Can i just make a suggestion to team leaders regarding points.

I have seen the post MaryAnne has put up regarding team leaders and collecting points. I would have thought it would have been just as easy to collect the points from you SG page. if you click on your team members names that are displayed on your SG Page, between the title and the photos, then click on 'about me', the siggies are displayed here. Then you can get your points. You dont have to chase people up who havent posted on the thread because all the members are already displayed. All you might have to chase up is points if there isnt any in the siggies, but you would have to do that anyway.
I personally wont be starting a thread in the team chat each month. It will mean finding it each month, telling all team members where it is and reminding them each month to make sure their siggies are upto date. its no more work to look at siggies through your SG page.

Just my persoanl opinion, but i hope it makes things a bit easier for some people.

Personally I think this is the best choice - it is one additional step per teamie for the Leaders but probably more reliable (and probably less work) then chasing people every month to get them to add points to an additional thread.

At the end of the day I think we will just have to see how it goes. Overall it does seem people like some features (the custom profiles, the Tags, the fast moving boards, the chat for most things other than the team points issue) but our hope is once people get used to the changes they will quickly learn better ways to do things. And if people who discover good way to accomplish tasks in a new way, like Kelley, post about it then the knowledge base grows with the shared info!

one of my teammates was concerned that she shouldn't put a link to where she is going on holiday... (the actual accomodation...) i said i thought that was okay and that we shouldn't be giving links to things like non-sponsor scrap outlets etc...

so just want to check it is okay to do links to things totally non scrapping related... :unsure:
