That may have been me. Here is what I said .............

I went into Ikea last June to order a kitchen. Arrived about 10am and quickly sorted the design as I had done that using their planner which we accessed in store. It took until 5pm to finally leave the store semi confident that they had finally got the order correct. The sale person had missed half of the items off the original order. We were given £250 compensation on the day.

Last week we finally took delivery of the final items we had been waiting for to complete our order. We still had 9 doors missing over Christmas. A complete nightmare from start to finish and we now have the joys of going through claiming ore compensation which they have agreed we will be entitled to but will no doubt have to fight for now.

I would never purchase a kitchen or anything else from Ikea that they do not have in the store to take home that day.

The doors I chose were also the most expensive ones they do

A complete nightmare from the moment we walked into the store to order and it is still ongoing now

I have to say that I have heard this story so many times - not just about Ikea but B&Q, MFI and Magnet too! Seems like you just have to order and pray!!!!

I would also add that my Dad (who used to fit kitchens) said that IKEA kitchens are a pain to fit. Mostly because all other companies leave a little space behind all the units so that you can run pipes down the back without you being able to see. IKEA units are not built like this, so if you need to run a pipe anywhere you have to cut into the back of the units to make space for it to go. Obviously this doesn't bother everybody, but personally I prefer NOT to have to see pipes everywhere, so didn't order mine from IKEA.

Beware if you buy Ikea kitchens you then have to buy your appliances from them too as the average British appliance is slightly bigger in size so doesn't fit under the worktops or fit the intigrated cupboards.

I had an Ikea kitchen fitted about 3 months ago and have to say it's FANTASTIC.

I had an Ikea kitchen fitted about 3 months ago and have to say it's FANTASTIC.
The only part which was missing was one drawer handle which was posted out to us, no questions asked. We used Ikea's own fitters, which cost the same as any other fitter would have, but with the advantage that they are working with Ikea kitchens all the time so there were no issues with anything. As for the lack of a pipework void at the rear of the cabinets, I'd far rather have the extra 3" depth in the cupboard that gives me.
We've had no problems at all with our appliances fitting under the worktops, and we didn't buy any of our other appliances there either (I didn't like the brands they stock!) The appliances they sell are British makes, such as Whirlpool, there's nothing different about the sizes of them, so I'm not sure what Sarah means about having to use their own make?

I have two IKEA kitchens as we have a large utility/ store room on the back of the garage as well as our normal one. The one in the house is over ten years old now and has had no problems with it atall. We put it together and fitted it ourselves and I was 5 months pregnant! The second is two years old and is just as good (the cheapest they do).
Our pipes in the kitchen run along the wall at skirting level so can be accessed from below the unit. Dont think I would want my pipes behind the units as it would be a disaster if there was a problem.

I'm off to order my units and worktops for my craft room tomorrow - got a voucher on Sale Day which means I still get discount as long as I order by Sunday.

Really pleased to hear about the lack of a 'void' behind the units - one more plus for getting from Ikea rather than anywhere else, as every little bit of space counts for stash storage

Our kitchen is from Ikea and all our appliances are standard ones. Looks great & was a bargain. The only problem we had was not all items were in stock and it took 3 trips to get everything, but having used ikea quite a lot we never expected any different!

I've been and ordered my units this morning. The lady who took my order was very friendly and helpful

Whilst I think it helped the store was very quiet, she was exactly the same the night before the sale when I was in with a load of questions and bouncing ideas off her. I was really pleased when I managed to catch her again, as I had confidence that she understood what I wanted from the room :)

I expected it to be busy today, partly 'cos it's a weekend and partly 'cos it's a BH weekend (usually hectic for DIYers, though I guess they're assembling rather than ordering today), but also 'cos any vouchers from the Sale Day have to be used by close of business tomorrow. They had several voucher books under the counter (they have to match up the part you take in with where it came from in the book), and when I asked she said there were still loads of people who took them who haven't been back  I got the impression they're expecting it to be manically busy tomorrow with these :o

I went ahead and ordered mine, getting an extension so I hope they don't deliver them too soon. Got my 21% off as well, a bargain.
My old kitchen is going to be my craft room I can't wait (but I'll have to)

I looked at IKEA kitchens, but we needed space behind the cupboards for pipes, so opted for B&Q, we were so lucky, it was fitted when they said, and fitted really well, I was sooooo impressed. We needed a different cupboard door so the boiler could be hidden in a cupboard, and the doors I had chosen wouldnt have looked right, so they drove to Perth to get what we needed before starting on the last morning.

I am sure your kitchen will be lovely when its fitted. :-)

My kitchen came from Ikea - can't fault the actual goods, all great and fitted together well.
I have to criticise the delivery of items. When it was delivered, the delivery men said there was for example 60 boxes, I counted and there was only 57!! They did not believe me, so they counted, and counted and counted again. I was right.
So I signed for 57 boxes and we then had to work our what was missing.
I had problems with out of stock items, delivered in dribs and drabs, my taps went missing on another delivery, then out of stock, then forgotten about. I had to drive to the store - a good 20 odd miles away.
So wasn't impressed with that side of it!!

I had a similar problem. We had units for a utility room which we picked ourselves. This was brilliant and we had no problems at all when fitting it.

We then decided to replace the kitchen units. We paid to have these units delivered and that's when the problems started. We DID receive the correct number of boxes - which was about 60 from memory. Not until the kitchen was being fitted did we discover that we had 3 incorrect size cupboards. Although Ikea did swap them, they did say it was our fault because we had signed for them. It was bad enough having to count all the boxes when they came off of the van, without matching them up to the kitchen layout too.

If we've been back to Ikea once we've been back 8 times with things that have been wrong. Athough I'm very pleased with it now, it's taken some getting there.

I had an Ikea kitchen about 7 years ago now (cream with chrome handles - ADEL design). It's still perfect. We were very lucky. DH was passing the Wednesbury store with the intention while the car was empty of picking up about£ £1300 worth of cabinets. Put them through the till - paid. And then as he was walking out (it was about 8.00 p.m.), the assistant came running after him saying there was an offer on as from the following day, but she'd just been given the nod to give him a £400 refund! He was flabbergasted. Went back in with all the receipts and they did the refund on the spot. We just liked all the accessories with the Ikea kitchens - I particularly like the pull out wire drawers. I really like the units - and in fact in the hall we used one of their oak designs to kit out under the stairs (which before had been a pit of rubbish) and we made tall narrow cupboard behind the front door out of top units as a shoe cupboard. I suppose you speak as you find, but we wouldn't buy anywhere else now.

I have my kitchen fitted now it is great, I know what people mean about pipes down the back but ours was fitted in a new extension so we didn't have pipes down the walls to worry about. We fitted it ourselves really easy to put together.
The only problem we had was one of the worktops was damaged when it got delivered but they replaced it within a couple of days no problem. I am so glad we went there it was a real bargain.

We are thinking of buying an Ikea kitchen and their appliances have a 5 year guarantee which seems very good. Has anyone actually bought any appliances from them and if so, would you recommend them?

Thanks

we have been today to ikea - so love the real oak worktops - not sure which base ones though - can I be really cheeky - those that have got ikea kitchens would you mind ever so much posting some piccies on here so we can have a cheeky peek - trying to decide which ones to go for and still working on the plan - very impressed overall though - I really like the idea of having two or three of the floor to ceiling (well almost) tall units - anyone done this and how does it look??

Thanks in advance

We're in the process of sorting an IKEA kitchen and I found a website which gives LOTS of hints, tips and problem solves ... it's USA based but there are plenty of Europeans on there too ... google "IKEA fans" ... it's free to register - I read on there that it is worth making a spreadsheet of all the different part numbers for each unit, then reordering them it on part number, so that you know, for example, how many doors you are expecting, how many drawer units etc etc.

Well after shopping around various other manufacturers/suppliers we've come to the conclusion that we are not going to be able to afford a new kitchen anytime soon. It's made us re-think our position on IKEA kitchens. I think the only way we will get a new kitchen is if we get an IKEA one and fit it ourselves!

I think SarahPitts' point about normal UK appliances not fitting IKEA units used to be valid as I do remember being told once by an IKEA employee that their appliances were a different size. However, I think they have since changed that because they now stock major brands like Whirlpool and Hotpoint whereas they never used to before. Having been to Sarah's house I love their kitchen and it has worked out beautifully!!

I also went to visit another friend of mine's house the other day and saw her new IKEA kitchen and it looks really good so I'm hoping that we can get a good kitchen too for less money than B&Q/Homebase/Magnet etc. I'm hoping that the lack of void won't matter too much as I'm not planning on moving the sink or gas hob from their current location so shouldn't need to trail pipes through the units. My only other issue with IKEA kitchens is that they use a 'joining strip' to connect lengths of worksurface or at corners. I'm not particularly keen on them as they collect loads of crumbs and stuff under them. I'd prefer a seamless join instead. I'm not sure how we would achieve that tho', so has anyone got the joining strip in their kitchen and does it collect stuff under it?

Thanks Jemma for the tip on the spreadsheets! That will be very useful!!

ETA: Elaine, I've seen those tall units used like that in the showrooms and it always looks really good. I'm planning to do the same along one wall as I desperately need the storage! I'm hoping it will look good!!

We have used Ikea kitchen units a few times. Here's the first kitchen we did, doing all the work ourselves (the only thing we contracted out was fitting the gas cooker):

Before:

After (including floor to ceiling pantry unit and integrated fridge / freezer):

In our next home we did that kitchen over as well:

After:

We also used kitchen units to create an office area at the end of the dining room:

http://www.glowmail.net/images/cantsfieldhouse/dining01.jpg - http://www.glowmail.net/images/cantsfieldhouse/dining02.jpg

We brought the units with us and just changed the doors for the office area in our current home, when it was my photography studio:

I absolutely love Ikea kitchen units for their customisability and ease of installation. We currently have a B&Q kitchen and I wish I could rip it out and put an Ikea one in instead. I find the Ikea quality better and the use of space within the units and the way they fit together is better too IMO.

Jen - a thousand thank you's - I'm delighted that you have shared your fabby kitchens with us - they look amazing - I am especially pleased you put the one on here with the tall cupboards on -how did you find that - was it in a really big room - I guess it helps the fact that they are white? - they look great - bet you had lots of storage space - I esp love these with the wire storage racks in and couldnt believe how reasonably priced they were - anyone else want to share - PLLLLEEEASE!!!

I loved the tall cupboards - so much storage! It helped that they weren't full depth, they were 40cm deep (same depth as wall cabinets) so nothing got lost at the back. The room was about 11x10ft I guess, so a decent size for a kitchen but I'd squeeze them into any room even if it was smaller, especially if the cupboards are white and you can afford to sacrifice the counter space along that wall.

We got an ikea kitchen fitted about 10 years ago - its still great. We bought different worktops at the time, but everything else has worked perfectly and is still in good condition.
Our builder says that they are by far the best value - he recently got quotes for similar kitchens from lots of different places and went with ikea at half the price of others - he thinks it also looked the most premium.

Sitting laughing - as I'm just off to ikea now. We have just done up the play room and I need more storage.

jen ive just been reading your blog and seen you bookcase it looks great.

can i ask, you say us used antique white paint, was that any brand in particular, is it a gloss paint and you also say you primed it again what did you use please.

that kind of furniture tends to have a laquere finish i think so i didnt think it could be painted but yours looks great.

i have a big bedding chest (i think it was) that has been painted at some point in its life its very deep but comes in handy for little girls toys ive been wanting to through it out for years but my now try and paint it white and use it in our new house when its ready.

can you believe we spent 6 hours in Manchester Ikea on Sunday - had to go and get a cuppa half way through designing our dream kitchen - we now have plans and a price list and are debating it all - we need a door bricking up and and window extending to do it as we want so thinking about it all - but we loved the white stat units with an oak worktop - silver handles, silver plinth and a silver back splash - 3 extra tall cupboards and a breakfast bar between kitchen and conservatory and further up the room a row of base cupboards the come out like an L with a worktop on top and then tother side of that but right next to - a row of some wall cupboards at floor level with another worktop on thus creating a seat but also one that can be used as storage but kids could could do baking at that worktop if they wanted but would be still fab when they outgrew it cose it would be just a seat and storage then - if you see what I mean
