Looks like the previous thread was removed because of last nights buying frenzy...so I have created a new one.

What did you guys make last night, share it and inspire me.

Oh no - no wonder i cant access it - all those beautiful cards I wanted to refer back to for inspiration have gone! :(

Can someone not just delete the chatter about non sponsors and give us back the rest of the thread so we can see the cards??:(

Maybe - everyone on there who had posted cards as thumbnails and NOT put them in the card gallery could help out and pop them in the gallery now???

I know this has been discussed a heap of times before - but regarding prismas and other water colour pencils - is there a HUGE difference in quality between prismas and say - Derwent or sets from other good stationery stores?? (scared to mention names! )

I currently use water colour paints - but some of the paper types don't cope with the wetting of the paper for blending! :(

The prismas look great - but expensive and I am wondeirng if - for now while I'm broke - I could get away with a cheaper type of water colour pencils???

I think some poeple prefer the derwent pastel pencil you can get them in the uk. I'm not sure if it was gadget that did sorry if I got that wrong. Maybe they can post a pic of the ones that they use.

I'm not sure about Prismas and those sort of things - it all seems to difficult to me.

I'm using Derwent watercolour crayons at the moment which I'm enjoying using - having a break from my H2Os which I also love but feel these sort of stamps are more subtle somehow.

Is there a video or something about showing you exactly how you use Prismas please? Ignore that doh, Mum2Jam has put something up - thanks

I really dont see any difference in effect with the water colour pencil & the prisma.
I would never pay all that for pencils, I use w h smiths or watercolour paints.
Much prefer a paint brush & an egg cup of water than the water brushes, You dont seem to have control over the amount of water coming out.

I am currently using Derwent water colour pencils, but today my 120 Primacolor Premier Pencils arrived....so now I just need to get some paper stumps and sansador.....per Isa's instructions...so a quick visit to Hobbycraft is in order today.

All my cards are on my blog, the link is below. I made a couple more last night and will post them later.

No there really isn't, prisma pencils have a high pigment concentration, but so do some other makes, which are just as good. There's been a lot of hype about the prisma brand, but any high pigment colouring pencil is just as good. hths

What is the difference between a "tortillon" and a "paper stump" ???

angeljakki
22-02-2008, 12:05 PM
I got the prismas to try out and I have to say I do prefer them to the winsor and newton water colours I was using. To me they worked out cheaper. I have been buying over many years the different water colour blocks and at £2.50+ for a half pan to get the quality of depth in colour needed for the good result the pencils work out cheaper.
I bought the 132 prismas and am still learning to use them but like the results they are giving. The colours are much more vibrant. One I managed to get done.

They come all neatly boxed and are much easier to take to and from hospital at the moment.

I've got polychromos, f&c pastel pencils, derwent watercolours, d&r artist grade watercolours, chromo acrylics, sakuras, marvys plus lots of different cheaper brand paints, felts, pencils etc. I've got cheap & expensive stumps, sable brushes, artificial brushes, koi's etc...

and I still cant colour in

I do like my polychromos but I think that it's purely because there are so many different colours. I find it easier to shade with watercolours tho. My thoughts on what to buy are, buy the best you can afford but if like me you're naff at colouring you wont notice a great improvement no matter how much you spend. :(

22-02-2008, 12:43 PM
thank you for your lovely comment dawn and Kim. Lovely cards maddie. This one is watercoloured and you can see the depth that is missing. Its harder to achieve the depth.

playingwithpaper I am sure you are just being harsh on yourself.

I would have to agree though buy the best you can as it does make a huge difference and sometimes you spend as much getting a set of this then that without achieving the results you would like.

I visited a lady a few yrs ago after she stated she would like to be able to colour like me and would never be able to in a milion years. After a couple of hrs she was getting the same results as me she was just trying to use to much colour at one time.

I am using watercolour pencils and liked the results but now I have seen the prisma ones OMG they are fab

i have polychromos and have just got some prismas. must say that the prismas in my opinion are better as the colour is more intense and vibrant. also better choice of colours 120 prismas and 72 polychromos.

angeljakki - love the tilda with the umberella, not seen that one before. great card

Yep was me... I have the derwent pastels and prismacolour pencils, and I actually prefer the pastels... but I guess that is a personal choice. I colour both in with paper stumps and sansador tho.

Here are a couple of thumbnails, the first using pastel pencils, the second using prismacolour pencils.

angeljakki, not being harsh, just realistic  it's why I only do whitework parchment these days. Give me a blade or parch tool and I can hold my own with most but add colour in to it and I'm pretty poor. Love your card btw, I've been hesitating over the the horse but he might just jump into my shopping basket now ;)

Jakki - I adore that card with the horse!!! I have the horse stamp - put away as a mothers day gift and not allowed to open it before! (BAH!!) Now i desperately need a "little person" with her hand out so I can do what you have done - that looks fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am back from that large craft chain, and got Sansador for £3.25 and large stumps were £1.55 each....which is very close to the online price...but no P&P.

Off to play and see how I do...I am going to post a comparison later.

There's a big difference between watercolour pencils and colouring pencils such as prismas, the colouring pencils are more vibrant. There isn't much difference between prismas and other high pigment colouring pencils though, polychromos are equally good as are other brands available. Look at the size of the pencil core - bigger means less 'scratchy'

I have a derwent pastels, and the soft drawing set too (some great fleshy earthy tones in that set), together with a cheapo set of pencils from Llidl of all places, and combined I get a good result, although I am after a large set of derwent artist or coloursoft pencils , just for the range of colours....... I use sansodor with all of the above.

Need some advice. What do you ladies use in the way of paper and ink for stamping and then colouring. My reason for asking is that I have been using plain white card, a few different sorts including SU card, together with a black stazon ink pad. I have been leaving the images for about 5-10 minutes to dry, but when I colouring the images in (particularly the face) the ink smudges.....What do you use, or what am I doing wrong.

CraftyCaz
23-02-2008, 12:09 AM
Ok, here is what the bottle says...Sansador is an Oil Colour - Low Odour Solvent. Many people use it with Prismacolor pencils, but I am sure I have seen someone else post that she uses it with other types of pencils. It is used to blend the pencils with a paper stump.

I am by no means an expert so please forgive me if I have got anything wrong.

I use plain card and Staz on I haven't had any problems yet. Try drying them with a drier maybe your pad is very wet and its taking longer to dry. Mine are at least 2yrs old if not more got them when it first came out. When they are new they are very liquid.

Great minds and all that, one I just finished, really enjoying this horse stamp. Had to go and help out at the workshop so it was a quick card. Please excuse the wings they are still drying

Oh sugar forgot to mention. For all those asking what paper to use for the prismas with sansador and stumps. I picked up some postcards 50 plain white in a pad form from WHS for 99p (31/2 x 51/2) and they work a dream. I hope I don't get shot down for this. I know they are not sponsors but it is card that anyone will be able to get hold of and it works as well as the A4 stuff I am using but I have had that for about 8yrs and I can't remember where it is from so when I seen that the card looked very similar I thought I would give it a blast. So anyone that maybe having problems getting suitable card this stuff is good. P.s. thanks Nicola loving the cards on your blog.

Well, although my Prisma's havent yet arrived, my Sansador and stumps did so I thought I would have a go with that and my watercolour pencils. And here is my version of a spring card with my Magnolia. It took a couple of attempts to find the right card (plain white not watercolour paper) but I don't think it's bad for a first try:)

But I am looking forward to the prisma's arriving!!!!!!

I do have quite a few Tildas now

hope this is ok to put this here, if not I am sorry, and please remove it,

TFL,

Marlene, I love the card! I looked on your blog but couldn't find anything about what you use to colour the cards. I'm especially interested in what everyone is using for Tilda's face.... everything I have seems too dark, too pink, too orange, or something.

I use watercolour paints - I use a sandy beigy colour (cant recall the actual names of the paint blocks) mixed with a tiny bit of red to make a fleshy colour - and yes - well watered down to make it pale enough - but dab a bit of colour on - dab your brush onto kitchen roll and then spread out the paint on the image with the slightly dryer brush - then add a deeper tint for the cheeks and shading. HTH

Remember - with water colour paints it is slightly different to prismas etc - you dont add dark colour and then tone down - you should start with pale colour and build up ;)

Look what are on their way to me as we speak - I cannot wait to get my hands on these little beauties!! The new ones are on order too and should follow shortly, soooooo cute :)

I know Caz it does seem unfair and the club kits are restricted to one per person even out there but they are great value you get 10 stamps for about £27.

Made this with a stamped Magnolia I received in a swap.

Quite liked the "Grow with Love" idea - hope it sounds right to "real" English speakers too.

Just my good old aquarel pencils and water again.

... years back when I made an ever so cute card with two Cherished Teddies on a swing for a couple's 25 wedding anniversary and wrote....:nono:

"Still swinging after 25 years" :( Imagine the  looks I got for that one.

Honestly - in Denmark - when people get along fine that would be the way to describe it IN DANISH - I now know NOT to say that to anyone from an English speaking country. :P

There you go - ROTFL - the laugh is on me...

Gorgeous cards - was it an Doodlebug alpha set that you used for your mothers day card or a stamps saying mum? If it was an alpha set could you let me know the name of it so I can go hunting!! Thanks.

The Doodlebug was an alphabet set. I got them HERE (http://www.capturethemagic.biz/acatalog/Doodlebug_Stamps.html) from Capture the Magic...they are gorgeous and stamp so cleanly.

thanks for your kind words. Charlie I am only just starting to try out different paper combos, spend more time trying to match up paper than card making if you know what I mean lol. It definately doesn't come to me naturally.
