I was thinking about putting brushmarkers on my xmas wishlist because I think they're on offer @ the moment 29.99.

Might do that. Am using watercolour pencils right now - but am scared to put too much on, but then when I take water too it it goes a bit wishy washy

Need to have the courage to give it alot of colour I think

Another one made today. I love this effect even if it does take longer to do. Each stamped image has been paper pieced.
As I don't rate my colouring in much I think this effect is worth the effort.

I think paper piecing is when you stamp onto patterned paper and lay on top of your original stamp, if that makes sense.

For watercolouring, I personally tend to take the colour from the end of the pencil with my aqua brush (I use the Koi brushes as in my experience they are the best), and use the tin lid or a saucer as a palette. That way I can water down the colour as much as I like before taking it to the paper.

I find it is best to start off with a light base and build up from that, developing shading where I want it. Working from dark and trying to even it out just doesn't work very well (at least for me), and that is what I used to try to do when I started.

I don't personally like using the pencils on the paper and then applying water to pull the colour around - I find it comes out too heavyhanded for me. Some people do seem to use this method with great success though, so I guess it is just a case of what works for you! I think that, as with the Zest-It/Prismas method, you would be best to apply a line of colour along certain edges of the image, and pull the colour around using your waterbrush, rather than colour the whole thing in.

I mostly use prismacolor pencils and Zest-it/blending stumps rather than watercolour pencils, or at the moment I'm quite liking using my aqua brush with the Colorbox Queue ink pads.

I agree. You just have to practice and find out what works for you. I started out using watercolour pencils, applying the pencil lightly to the paper first then blending with the water brush, then going over again with the pencil where I wanted some deeper shading. I also use prismas with sansodor as well now, outlining then blending with stumps. Both give a nice effect, just different and I don't prefer one way over the other, just nice to have both options! Never tried the Queue ink pads with the aqua brush, though I might do - sounds interesting!

Here's another card I did today :) ETA - irl the card blank is white, I scanned it in so it only looks like it is floating

I use Aquatone watercolour sticks - they are like pencils without any wood, just all pigment - and I too pick up colour straight from them with my water brush :) I am really pleased with how lovely these images colour in

How are you all using them to stamp? On easi mount or sticking it to an acrylic block?

Some lovely cards, thanks for sharing.

I love the 'Cut' of the rubber stamps, really deep and sharp...I am sure they will give fantastic images once stamped. (sorry getting all deep and techy here LOL, but I like stamps that are made well!)

Well, no creations from me - I am totally knackered after spending Saturday and Sunday moving house. Am surrounded by stuff in bags and boxes, and all I want to do is lie down, especially as I also seem to have a dodgy stomach today. Ho-hum! On the upside, I have lots of lovely space for crafting in, so once I'm settled it should be great!!

Mary I've just discovered it really depends on the quality fo your colouring pencils/pens. I was getting some so-so results with my whispas stamping pens but then bought myself some intense water colouring pencils for my birthday (ie some quality ones not the cheap ones I got years ago from the pound shop). The results are stunning compared to what I achieved before!

GeordieGirl
30-11-2007, 10:23 AM
Mammy Hen - did you used to live in Whickham?

I'd reccomend Derwent watercolour pencils, that is what I use and I do believe the big tin is on offer at the moment in Hobbcraft :)

claire.viney
30-11-2007, 10:27 AM
Mammy Hen I am in Poole and I think there is a real lack of crafty stuff in Dorset. There is a shop that I have been to in Winton for a class on glitter butterflies but I think they mainly do scrap booking stuff but it is pretty small and was really just a social thing. Perhaps it is bit far out for you but if you want the details, pm me and I will let you know.

I love the bead shops in Shaftesbury!!! My dh dreads going there!!!

Jayne W

Have just ordered some prisma colours from US.... woo hoo, and the odourless spirit and paper stumps from UK whic will probably turn up tomorrow, and the pencils wont come until sometime next week.... will have to practice patience here, although that is definately not my strong point.

Hi - my first 2 Nellies & 1 Tilda arrived today. Fab service Mrs Mac.

Hope I'll get time to play over the weekend.

I had to place another order when Mrs Mac added the restocks - hope that they come just as quickly.

I've been lurking here for a while & think that all the cards that you are all doing are fab.

Yes I think it does contain every colour, if it's not marked down in the shop get them to check the price at the till, as the girl said the watercolours weren't reduced but I told her I received a flyer by email and she scanned them and they were £39.99. I also used a £5 voucher I had then received another £5 voucher back so it was a real bargain.

Mammy Hen - did you used to live in Whickham?

I'd reccomend Derwent watercolour pencils, that is what I use and I do believe the big tin is on offer at the moment in Hobbcraft :)

Hi Andrea yes it's me that lived a hop, skip and jump from you. I will PM you as one of the biggest regrets in my life is not meeting up with you.

Tonight I have been having a go at colouring with Derwent Aqua tone sticks. These are woodless watercolour sticks. Should I put the pencils on my Christmas list?

Anybody got any tips for colouring in with the prismas? I've got sansodor and a load of different stumps but i'm a bit hesitant as to how to actually get going - i need to be ready for when my Nellies arrive!

Here are a couple of Sugar Nellie cards I made this afternoon.... the second is coloured with pastel pencils and using sansador and paper stumps, (used pastels because my prisma colours haven't turned up from US and just wanted to try the stumps and sansador out). The first was just coloured in using watercolours. Here goes....

Lisa, Inge has just started a thread with a link to her tutorial on her blog. It's a fab tutorial, check it out. Sansador is the brand name for odorless mineral spirits which you use to blend your coloured pencils with paper stumps. It is also called zest-it, which is what I use.

Don't diss yourself Laura, you card is very nice and you have been amazingly successful if that is your first use of watercolour pencils.

I don't like everything I see on these boards, but I appreciate the skill and creativity of it all. The world would be a very boaring place if we all liked the same stuff.

Well done
