image format

Can anyone advise please?

I am scanning something and trying to layer it on top of something else without the box showing. Do I have to trace round the image and then save it as a JPEG or a GIF?????

I have photoshop 7 and I know this is probably really simple but I just cant seem to get my head round it today and I am trying to do something for an advert :(

when i scan , the image sits in a white box that if I then try to paste it onto another layer its still in the white box. Say I scanned a shape/ die cut and wanted to have no backround thats what i mean. Not sure if I am making much sense.

you need to use your magic wand tool on the image. this should cling to the shape. you click edit and then cut and then past onto your other layer.

thanks kirsty. I was trying to do it with the magnetic lassoo :( as with anything, easy when you know how.
