hi linda....

if you want to actually create digital layouts you will need a software package that allows layering and supports png graphics etc., as most of the digital kits you can download are in that format.

there are some excellent freeware packages out there, if you have a look here (http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/gmm/fwgraphicedit.html) you will find a whole bunch of suitable freeware programs. some of them are easier to get to grips with than others, i personally like "the gimp", though that is a pretty heavy open source program, which allows you to do almost (if not all) the things you would in psp or ps....

if you do decide to go down the psp or ps route, have a look on ebay or in pcworld for older versions of the software.. they will give you all of the functionality at a far more realistic price :)

Only just found this link when I was coming on to ask the same question. Have downloaded the GIMP and had a look for some tutorials. Any suggestions please? If it's similar to PSP etc, I'd like to give it a go before I invest in any other. I'm assuming it can't be free for ever :D
