View Full Version : Medallion Cards -- Qs and whereabouts of on line instructions?
So I've finally got a medallion stamp, glue and glitters.....
tried to stamp it (using Stazon) onto the one and only sheet of acetate I own, and it's messed up the acetate completely -- stamp kept sliding, and won't clean to clear :(
Having had a dig, the only other possible replacement for the acetate I've found is some Inkjet Transparencies (and heaven knows where they came from!! probably a desk/cupboard clearout at work, when they always tell us to bin everything!)
Don't know whether this will work or not, especially as one side is textured (but looks clear when held to light). Which side do you think I should try stamping on?
I'm pretty certain I had a magazine ages ago with some instructions, but I can't find it. I don't even know whether I glue/glitter on the inked side or the reverse?
So does anyone know where I can find instructions for making one of these on-line????
Need to get the card made for Saturday, so may have to come up with something totally different if I can't get going on this tomorrow morning

Why does it have to be on acetate ??
though that was the norm to get the shine?!?!?!?
all the examples I've seen in stores are on acetate....

I've used heaps of different backgrounds .... pearlised card, normal card, glossy card .... and then i've either used sparkly gel pens to 'colour' in, or glue and glitter .... but mainly I use stickles.
If you want a glossy effect on acetate or glossy card - a Stazon or a Brilliance ink pad would be better. There is a nack to stamping on acetate and glossy card tho, as your rubber stamp will automatically go to slip .... its practice, practice, practice.
I've always stamped & heat embossed the medallion several times on card, cut them out in various stages of the patern & put it together with foam squares. Then used stickles to glitter it up a bit. Not as glittery as the acetate version but just as nice and easier to find card!

If it's a True medalion stamp we have lots of the cutting sheets for them. Let me know which number it is and I'll see if we have one tomorrow.
 Snap with the stickles!

They also look fantastic done on several bits of coordinated card - heat embossed and then decopaged ala jane nestorenko (sp?) on create and craft
i have done them on acetate cheryl using inkjet transparencies and i use stazon on the textured side and glue on that side - that way when the glue has dried from the front (glossy) side you will see the stazon very clearly and its all very shiny.

no idea if it's a 'true' one or not.... local craft shop didn't have many in, and they all seemed to be the same make.
has 'creative stamping 2004' stamped onto one side, and a sticky label that says HH 1109 H on the opposite side.
what's a cutting sheet?

Yes stamping on acetate is just a case of practise till you get the knack, I normally use a Brilliance Ink Pad and then glitter on the stamped side, then when it's all dry it looks lovely on the other side iykwim.
Also stamp and emboss several times on various different colours of card and build them up
Sometimes I use the embossable acetate with just a normal versamark clear pad and gold embossing powder - looks lush :) (when I do it embossed I generally glitter the embossed side and have that as the front )

The creative stamping ones are the true medallions :) The cutting sheets are a guide to show you which bits you can cut out to build up 3D like. Although the best thing about a medallions is the fact that by cutting different parts out you can get a different look every time, they are basically stamps within a stamp.

made a mental note in the shop of how the sample had been cut to layer it up -- just hoping I can remember as I go

Cheryl it won't matter ... do what YOU think looks right.

Yeah just play and have fun with it - you'll get loads of different looks depending on how you cut it out :)
I tried to figure out a cutting pattern before I saw the example..... I got to 8 layers, but they'd done it in 5 -- and I can't help feeling that 5 is plenty deep enough, even if I do only have to pop it through a door rather than in the post

I know I have a sheet for that one as I've done it several times, it's beautiful. But if you want I can send you a copy of the cutting guide as they can sometimes be a bit daunting if you've never done one before.

Thanks
Will remember that for the future -- but making sure my Stazon remover is actually stored with with Stazon pads might help too

Don't worry about having too many layers, I quite like them with a lot and I actually have made boxes to put mine in! Mind you with the new postal charges I think I 'll be doing flatter ones in future!
As for stamping on acetate, I'm lucky and get mine from work but I have been known to have to stamp about 10 images before I got one which was usable! I found that using a stamping mat helped me as one of my problems was that the images weren't even, however practice definetly is what you need!

Ok, now I am absolutely positive I saw Jane Nesterenko use an anti static cloth on a piece of acetate. She brushed baby powder on the acetate. You then stamp the image and use the anti static cloth to take of the excess powder. I love making these cards - it was me doing lots of them that got my friends into cardmaking!
oooooo.... I have an anti static bag for when I do embossing! wonder if using that'd work? have tried applying glue (and glitter) to the first layer, and have stray bits all over it !!! am going to wait until it dries properly, and then use a paint brush to try and get the worst off ;)

wow the snowflake one sounds great do u have a picture?
we made the decorations last christmas at a class and stuck the 2 medalions together
whats stickles???

it's like glitter glue, but so much better --- bought some a year ago after hearing about them, and now I keep adding new colours to my stash.
I'm sure a number of sponsors will them, but the ones at Cre8tive Online are here (http://www.cre8tiveonline.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=66_89)

I think I've seen her do this too. I've used an anti static powder bag on both acetate (not for medallions through) and on shiny mirri type card -it seems to give the stamp more grip! Just be sure to wipe the surplus off after the ink is dried! And I discovered baby wipes are also good for removing booboos with other than stazon/permanent inks if you're quick.
I wonder if using a stamp positioner might help with the slipping problem for big stamps like the medallions?
Rosemary
I've managed to get reasonable images by cutting the transparancy into sections about the size of the stamp, inking the stamp, and then very carefully pressing the transparency onto the stamp rather than the other way around.....

Cheryl - once you've got the knack of stamping on acetate you'll wonder why you ever struggled :)
Best tip would be to lower the stamp very gently onto the acetate. Keep one hand on the centre of the stamp and then use the other hand to firmly press all over the stamp.
The tricky bit is lifting the stamp off. Use your little fingers to hold the acetate firmly on the table when you remove the stamp. This stops the static/slippage.
Another way is to stick the acetate down onto the work surface using masking tape.
Hope that helps - I love using Medallion stamps

Just thought.....
Another idea to try later is reverse-cutting. Instead of cutting the layers away from round the outside of the design, try cutting the smallest section out from the centre of the design and working form the inside to the outside.
Hope that makes sense when written down....
not so sure of the reverse cutting -- that would mean using a knife, and I'm much better at cutting with scissors!! I try and stay away from decoupage that needs a knife for tiny 'windows' in the upper layers of a design, which is a shame 'cos I lurve decoupage

Cheryl haven't you got any of those little scissors that cut like tweezers? Ideal for all that intricate cutting instead of a craft knife. Cutting the medallions in reverse looks a bit like a kaleidescope - very pretty with a bit of ribbon tied round the last layer.
yep! got a pair of them, but struggling on the transparency with them. My little X-cut ones work a treat though

Have pm'd you Cheryl so hopefully that will be of some help. Ditto everything about acetate, it's fabby to do medalions on. I'll try to upload some pics for you.
Thanks for the cutting sheet Julie
The example in the shop did layers 1, 2, 3, 6 & 7.
Can't decide whether I've got the time (or patience) to add steps 4 & 5 into it now
Think I'll wait for the others to dry (currently in airing cupboard to try and speed it up a bit!) and see how it looks first...... Have actually made up the card base, and got layer 1 into place, as I did that layer before starting on the others in order to get some idea of time/energy needed ;)
