Its gotta be mens cards for me - I'm sick of making male cards with either footballs, golf clubs or beer mugs on em !!
I also get stuck making sympathy cards, so I tend to make them quite simple.
What do you either hate making, or struggle making ?

Mens cards for me too! Most of my stash seems to be female orientated so i normally give up and buy cards for male occasions.

SNAP its mem for me as well and even boys. I seem to have stuck to iris folding ones lately because I can't think of anything else interesting
Again, definately male cards, although boys can be easier then men.
I use a lot of blank CD's on male cards with stamps/ stickers on that have been coloured with stardust pens (love them!!) - although the images I use tend to be 'classic male' like trains and footballs.

Men's cards are always tricky for me as the men in my family aren't into the 'typical' male themes such as sport and beer.....
For the last year though everyone, male or female, has had cards with their initial on - women with ribbon and flowery paper and the men with male paper and rugged brads - saved a lot of brainache !! :D

Now thats a great idea Scrapcat !!
I've done a few of the male ones by just stamping h a p p y b i r t h d a y with MM alpha stamps onto card, embossing in different colours, then cutting up each letter, inking them, and sticking them onto the card with 3d spongey-doo-dah things.

I think thats lovely Joanne.
I do think men are slightly more difficult.
The card I made was easy enough to make.
All it is was bazill mono green card as the main card.
A strip of basic grey vagabond & corners rounded,a basic grey tag,
BG Monogram, cut sizzix primitive Hearts, inked everthing & used bg stickers & organza ribbon.
I think that card would be easy to make.

Joanne that card is lovely - I love the stamp you've used.
I think you're right Dawn, sometimes cards can LOOK much harder to make than what they actually are - I think its signs of a good cardmaker !!!

I hate making wedding invitations, especially when there's loads. I just find it too repetative and boring. I have to start some soon for a wedding. The bride to be wants something unique and modern. (oh dear)

 I'd love to have seen that, what did you do?
I make cardmaking templates, have to make 10 per month and I try to make them 50/50 male/female themes so I know how difficult it can be to think of mens cards! :D What you have to do is think of something really boring like maybe a garden shed or a TV remote, those always go down really well for mens cards, thinking about it though those would work for some lady's cards too!
I hate making wedding invitation cards the most because then you're making them for someone else they always want something boring like white/cream with a heart in silver/gold :P

I'm another one who finds making cards for men difficult. I make all my female friends birthday cards but more often than not buy funny ones for male friends! Although sticking a beer mug on the front of a card is probably enough for some of them!

Sympathy cards I just do a very simple stamp of a flower, or bottom 2/3 of card in descrete patterned paper, with a bit of ribbon across the join, and a prima flower at the end, and a 'with sympathy' stamp.
When fil died earlier this year, my dh wanted me to do a small card for the flowers - he said it would mean more than the one the florest provided - again just kept it very simple, and dh was v pleased - it was more personal he felt.

Hate mens cards - I'm always drawn to girlie things in shops so don't really have much in the way of mens stuff. And seeing as DD is the star of most of my scrapping thats another reason I'm drawn to girlie papers and embellishments. DH and my dad are both hard to make cards for - neither of them is into stereotypical 'mans stuff' like sports or DIY.

I know where you're coming from, but have to say I've not found this to be the case........
I made one for a neighbour, which was certainly the first card I made to send to anyone outside the immediate family.
I knew the neighbour to speak to, and knew which house (5 doors up) & car were hers, but can't say we ever did more than exchange greetings on passing. Didn't really know her partner at all though! But heard through a mutual friend that her partner had died suddenly while they were away visiting family one weekend :(
Had a quick look in our local shops, but couldn't find anything appropriate. The cards were either very religious (which I was pretty sure they weren't, and was confirmed by mutual friend) or implied a close friendship with the people -- so I made a very simple one using a shadow cutting template.
Heard back through mutual friend (a few days before being thanked in person) that she'd burst into tears on opening it. Apparently the fact it was handmade came over to her as being much more personal and caring, as I hadn't just 'bought the first one I saw'. Mutual friend also told me that it had pride of place amongst the cards from outside immediate family!!! (not really the expression either of us would want to use, but can't think of anything else to explain it!)

male ones for me too. I've got my DH card in my album in the gallery it says STUNNER on it as thats what he likes to call himself!
Sympathy cards can be difficult good kob they are few and far between. the last one i needed was for a baby so I purchased that from clinton cards it was a handmade style but had the most beautiful poem it in. And the time before that i copied a Georgia O'keefe painting, but did it in watercolours and changed the colours slightly.

Sorry Cal, didn't mean to hijack your thread, so I'll play nicely now.
What cards do I hate making - the ones you have to make for people who expect one hand made cos they know that's what you do, but who you know will drop it in the bin when the cards come down.

Definitely agree with this -- couldn't believe it when I saw the ones I'd made for younger GDs 1st birthday in the bin while babysitting for DD!!! What made it worse was the fact she kept the shop bought ones from god-parents
Hmmm. Don't think I make enough of any particular cards to hate having to do them. I don't use the beer mug / cars / golf etc route for male cards as I find that they're not what people seem to like. I use a lot of black and white papers (from one of those stack pads) as I find they make a great basis for more masculine cards.
I have to make loads of music cards as my DH runs a music shop and likes to have themed cards to sell. I've just started doing some ballet-related ones as a lot of mum's seem to come in on the way to / from ballet lessons!

I dont think there are any cards that I hate making, I quite enjoy doing them all. Obviously sympathy cards are always tinged with sadness, but I do like to make them rather than buy - I like to put a personal message in, depending on the circumstances.
I made this one attached last week for a friends MIL - just a picture printed onto Photographic paper - and the text was printed directly to the card.
Male cards are difficult but here are a couple Ive done this year :D
Edited to add the Red/Black one was lifted from the cover of a Pad I think.

I like making most cards too.
For men's cards I tend to make them quite graphic - mixing up patterns and textures rather than going for a motif - as you say, golf, rugby, hockey, football - it's not what really appeals to me!

I'd have to agree that male oriented cards whether for adults or children are difficult for me.
Eileen C
03-10-2006, 08:56 PM
I don't mind adult male cards, either for someone I know or for sale. I tend not to use sport /beer etc (although I do sometimes!) but use "male" colours and textures, often with a "retro" feel. According to friends, 19 year old boys really like my cards!! The ones I find difficult are for younger boys, especially if you try to keep away from the football theme (my DS would definitely throw a football-themed card in the bin, even if it was handmade, as he hates football!), girls are so much easier!
The other one is making cards suitable for elderly relatives (eg mother) to give to even more elderly relatives - I end up doing something not at all to my taste, but if they appreciate it that's what matters.
I'll probably get shot down, but I loathe most decoupage and don't use it on cards!
I agree that most peel-offs are vile, but I do sometimes use them discretely to great effect! I often use those mini-text ones, but preferably in black or white (sometimes coloured with pens) but most seem to come in silver or gold.
If I do a card I really don't like, I can almost guarantee it'll sell really quickly!

Sorry to digress a little but with regards to sympathy cards, had horrendous time making one for my grandad who passed suddenly in november last year, I luckily found the perfect stamp of an upright rocking chair, embossed it with black powder, used watercolour pencils and made them look like the stamp had been painted by using a damp brush and going over the pencils. I then framed it with green card, the colour I had used to colour in the cushions of the rocking chair and put it on cream linen card. As my Grandad had always sat in his favourite upright rocking chair and I'd managed to find this stamp that looked exactly like it, it made for a perfect sympathy card for my Grandma, and it still sits in her display cabinet today in pride of place. Goes to show that a handmade card can touch someone and become something that someone appreciates how much hard work went into it, and it can be a piece of artwork that can sit on show for time to come.
As for cards I hate to make, my boyfriends friends drive me insane usually cos they are a)male and b)cos they were due 3 days ago and he's only just twigged that he should have given me notice a fair while ago. Genious.;)

Some lovely cards girls:wub:
I find adult male cards the most difficult to make, in fact I have a card to make for my brothers Godfather who is 65 next week:unsure:
Boys cards I find easier, I tend to do Spiderman cards using bitty bodies:D I also tend to personalise them too, which the kids love:lol:

I have problems with cards for people I don't know! I'm fine with friends and family - but get stuck if someone asks me to make a card and I know nothing about the recipient. Once I've go an "image" of the person I'm fine. I'm also ok with cards to sell at craft shows etc - that's do-able as they'll be bought by an anonymous person for another anonymous person! Ok - just realised that I'm wierd as I've never really thougth about this before!

For me it's cards for men as well. I tend to avoid the usual typical things like sport or beer (unless used in a very modern way) and go for colours and textures. Will post a couple of pics later of the ones that I have just made.
I too really don't like the majority of peel offs - I think they 'cheapen' a card. I only tend to use the individual letters or the really modern ones you can get.
I don't mind doing sympathy ones but thankfully I haven't had to do many! Here is one that I made last year:
