On my 35mm SLR I used to have a lens/filter which screwed on to protect the actual lens glass but I can remember what it was, I don't think it was polarising, maybe something like a uv filter. I'd like to buy one for my canon 350D but i'm not sure what to buy, does the uv one improve the piccis too? It's primary use, for me, is to protect the exposed glass on the lens. What do you think is the best one to go for?
Think I have a UV or a skylight one for mine ....

I have a UV filter on mine - I got it from Jessops.
I also had to by a new lense cap as the original one wouldn't fit with the uv filter on they ordered that for me and it came in within a couple of days.

I keep a UV one on all the time.

That's brilliant, thank you. So what does the UV one do then?

A UV filter absorbs the ultraviolet rays which often makes outdoor photographs hazy and indistinct. A muliti-purpose fine-weather filter also serves as a permanent lens protector.
