I am thinking of setting myself up with a sideline project of an art journal. However I am wondering how truthful people are in them and other journals? I keep a normal journal on and off but often find it difficult knowing how honest to be. God forbid anything happened to me but I don't want it being read and people being upset. It's only the odd day I would write something like that though!

Hi,
What's the point of keeping a journal if you're not being true to yourself?

i've been keeping a journal for a while and I try to be truthful in it- being an analyst helps lol when working things out while writing it I generally put down more than one point of view and am just as hard on myself as I am on others- I think if being truthful means true about yourself as well as others then it will balance out and people that matter- if they do end up reading it- will understand that :)

Very true Efemera and that is the attitude I want but something is still holding me back. Culpepper that sounds like a good way to work things out. Thanks for the responses.

Keeping a journal is an edited version of the truth anyway. Unless you are walking around with a pen and pad all day, you won't record everything. The selection of things that are worthy of recording is editing. I heard someone on Radio 4 talking about his diary, I think it was a politician and he said that he would do things just to make his diary interesting.   I thought that was quite funny. I suppose a diary/journal would be an inspiration in some ways if you put it like that. I 'd create a code for things that are sensitive, perhaps think of code names, keys and symbols for your moods. Hey I think I am writing my way into doing one of these too. Don't imagine it would be any more successful than my blog. I haven't written anything for ages. Might do that now. Sorry for emptying the ramblings of my brain. If you take your time with this one there might be some sense in it:lol:

Hmm, with an art journal, you wouldn't necessarily have to explain all the details, would you? Whatever happened in your day could just inspire your art. You might make a note of what it was that influenced you, but it's also about the art, right?
