Since the flurry of photo wall discussions, I’ve been pondering how I could get this look in my flat. Although it has its fair share of picture-hanging facilities, I wanted the photo wall look that’s been done so successfully by others. Unfortunately I don’t think my landlady would take very kindly to me driving 15 screws into the wall, so I came up with this solution which hangs from just one screw. The three columns of frames all hang from a steel strip, creating an almost-invisible effect.
These aren’t the final photos - I might go all monochrome or at least give them all a white border.
Ingredients
15 x 6x4 frames (IKEA ‘Raket’ or similar no-frills frames)
Wire rope (from IKEA’s ‘Deka’ curtain wire kit or similar 2mm wire rope)
1 x Steel V-shaped strip (I found mine in a big branch of B&Q)
6 x 2cm screws
Power drill
Staple gun
Paint
Once you’ve painted the frames you need to attach the top row of frames to the steel strip using the screws. You’ll need to pre-drill holes through the metal and preferably pre-drill small holes into the frames themselves as well. Make sure the frames are evenly-spaced (I used the width of the wooden frame as a guide.
Next, take the first column of frames and starting from the bottom, staple a couple of inches of wire horizontally across the frame to hold it in place and then attach the wire to the back of the frames, again keeping the spacing even. Run the wire up one side of the frames first, eventually joining up with the frame that’s attached to the steel. Run the wire across the top of that frame and then attach the wire to the other side of the frames. On the centre column, leave a bit of slack at the top to use as a hanging wire.
et voila :)
