Sketches...?

Probably asking a really duh question here - but can someone explain to me what sketches are (I think I kinda know...?!?) but more inportantly how do you make them?

i have done a couple
just open your graphics program
or you can use paint
just use black or grey
use the shapes and away you go

Sketches are just a layout design that you work from. I often do sketches before I do my layout, I usually just hand sketch them though. Here is a link to some sketches by Becky Fleck who I just love! (oneday I will get around to using them too!:lol:) http://www.memorycreators.com/sketches.htm

Thanks...am feeling slightly less in the dark now! I think i was thinking that you used them literally, but I see that they're just an idea or help now.
