Ahhhhhhh.
Got spanking new 350D although I'm completely out of my depth. I have set the resolution to fine on S, M, L. But everytime I bring a picture in I only get a resolution of 72!!!
I can't for the life of me work out where or how to change it. I have just checked against my old Nikon (4mp) - when I import these files they are 300 dpi.
Im checking this in PSE although I have done no processing at this point. Yes, I can resize my image which increases the resolution, but I'm confused.
Can anyone shed any light on the subject? Every forum I've checked are far too techy. I'm good with the PC, but the camera is another matter!
Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

Have you got PSE 4.0? It sometimes doe sthis to me - it's not the photo -it's your page settings. If you go into resize image, and change the resolution to 300 BUT make sure the 'resample image' box is UNCHECKED. This will just change the resolution without altering the image itself. But I don't know how to chnage the settings so it ALWAYS brings images in at the right res - sorry!

It's PSE 3 but as I say - if I import a picture from my compact camera - it's 300. To set the new file sizes Edit>Preferences>Units&Rules. My resolutions are set to 300 for printing and 72 for screen. Changing this has no effect on images.
I'm guessing that this is really a setup issue with the Canon - as I'm just checking the res in PSE.
Thanks anyway. Any other ideas?

It's completely normal. See this page (http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00FFCR&tag=)
don't panic - the 72 is just the DPI - you can just change that in Photoshop - it's the overall pixel dimensions that matter

Thankyou for the link and reassurance! When I change the image size to say, 7 x 5, it never comes out quite the right dimension, e.g. 7 x 4.758. Do you just accept that there'll be a bit of 'white' space on the short side? What do you guys generally do when you come to printing? I normally print mine at Jessops etc. You normally just select the image size you want and it does the rest (I think is scales rather than just crop). Does that make sense?
hi again Morag
I tend to print all my pics at home, and usually crop down to just the bit I want, which tends to mean that my prints aren't standard sizes anyway, but from memory, the sensor is "shaped" in the proportions of a 6x4 print - therefore if you enlarge to 7x5, it will end up (7/6*6 = ) 7 by (7/6*4 =) 4.666667 inches.
If you want a pure 7x5 without a little white stripe, you'll need to slice a little bit off of the long edge (the 6" edge) before you increase - precisely 9.3% of it, or 0.4 inches if it starts out at 6x4. In other words, you need an image that is 5.6"x4", this is in perfect proportion to a 7"x5" image so will enlarge without any white stripe.
I hope that makes sense!
and for best print quality, increase your DPI to 300 before saving
have fun!
Sarah
